Abstract

The claim that serial verb constructions encode a single event is made with great regularity in the literature on serial verbs but is a claim that I find difficult to test in critical cases (Comrie, 1995). Sasaknese has a lot of serial verbs. This unique feature cannot be easily found in every language. This paper focused on analyzing the notion of ‘single-event’ in Sasaknese V-V constructions. In this study, the X-bar theory is applied to discuss the constituent structure of serial verb constructions. This study used the data of Sasaknese meno-mené native speakers’ utterances by using observation method. The result of the study shows that Sasak serial verb constructions have V-V structure that describe one single event as a single predicate

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper aims to analyze the semantic types, the characteristics, and the constituent structure and functional structure of Sasak serial verb constructions. The theory of Typology and Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) were used to analyze the data. The data in this research were taken from the uttarances of speakers of meno-mene dialect of Sasak. This study is designed as a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through observation, interview, and reflective-introspective methods with recording and elicitation techniques. The results show that Sasak serial verb constructions have ten semantic types, which are motion, direction, instrument, comitative, manner, aspect and mood, benefactive, causative, cause-effect, and synonym. Based on the phonological, morphological and syntactical characteristics, Sasak serial verb constructions have the following characteristics: (1) They fall under one intonation contour, 2) They form mono-clause as a single predicate, 3) They have verb markers that occur only on one verb or each verb obtains the same marker, 4) They share aspect, mood, negation, and 5) They share the same arguments. The analysis of constituent structure and functional structure shows that Sasak serial verb constructions have V-V stucture, and X-COMP or X-ADJ structure.

Abstract

This paper focused on analyzing Grice’s maxim as stated in Levinson’s Pragmatics between sellers' and buyers’ conversations during buying and selling activity at the Sasak traditional market in Praya City. The data was collected by recording the speech event using a digital voice recorder and then transcribing the utterances literally. The analysis is done by the pragmatic identity method, then the result is presented using the informal method. The findings reveal 83 instances demonstrated the fulfillment of maxims and 25 exhibited the flouting of maxims. Importantly, participants tended to adhere to maxims more often than deviate from them. Overall, the research indicates adherence to cooperative principles by the speech participants from both the sellers and the buyers to state what they mean clearly and briefly so the conversation flows smoothly. But they also flout the cooperative principles to indirectly send their meaning of utterances. Any utterance they deliver is based on the psychological process that follows principles of normative, behavioral, motivational, and cognitive.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the English language needs of Information Technology (IT) students from both linguistic and pedagogical perspectives. The research seeks to identify the students’ specific language requirements and the implications for curriculum design in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 80 students of the Information Systems and Technology Program at ITB Semarang through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The findings revealed that reading and writing are the most essential skills for IT students, especially in understanding technical documentation and producing project reports. Students also expressed a strong need for vocabulary enrichment, authentic materials, and digital-based communication practices. The pedagogical implications suggest that ESP instruction should integrate task-based and project-oriented learning, align materials with professional contexts, and emphasize communicative competence in technology-related discourse. Abstract

This study, based on learning practices in English classes at a university, aims to describe changes in students' English skills and explore the development of their independent learning abilities through digital application-assisted learning and reflective learner diaries. The study was conducted on first-semester Biology students taking an English course at an Indonesian university using a one-group pretest–post-test design for three months. During the intervention, students routinely used an English learning application as a means of independent learning and wrote daily diaries reflecting on the material and their learning experiences. The research data included English proficiency test results before and after the intervention, as well as student learner diaries. The analysis showed a trend toward improving students' English skills, particularly in vocabulary and grammar. Furthermore, the learner diaries indicated a growing awareness of their learning process and the emergence of independent learning behaviours. Although exploratory in nature, this study demonstrates that combining a learning application and written reflections has the potential to support the development of both English skills and students' independent learning abilities in heterogeneous university classes

Abstract

This qualitative generative syntactic study investigates the types of coordination in compound sentences found in Sasaknese children’s books Nyale leq Tian Manusie and Dende Mirah Buaq Ate Kembang Mate. The analysis applies Quirk and Greenbaum’s classification of coordination and employs Chomsky’s X-bar theory to examine the syntactic structures of coordinated clauses. The findings show that Sasaknese employs both syndetic coordination, marked by conjunctions such as laguq ‘but’, dait ‘and’, and terus ‘so’, and asyndetic coordination, which is realized through clause juxtaposition marked by commas. X-bar analysis demonstrates that each coordinated clause independently projects an Conjunction Phrase (ConjP) as the head of IPs, confirming syntactic equality within coordination.
