Abstract

growing interest in exploring complementary and alternative medicine approaches, including the use of herbal remedies, as adjunct therapies. This literature review examines the current evidence on the efficacy and safety of using herbs as companion therapy in the management of hypertension. The review of the literature indicates that certain herbal supplements, such as garlic, hawthorn, and green tea, have demonstrated the potential to lower blood pressure and may be beneficial when used in conjunction with standard hypertensive medications. However, the available evidence is limited, and further research is needed to establish the long-term safety and efficacy of these herbal treatments. (Lattanzio, R, M. and Weir, R, M., 2020) (Afolayan, A. and Wintola, A, O., 2014) Careful consideration of potential interactions and side effects is crucial when incorporating herbal remedies into the treatment of hypertension. Overall, the findings suggest that the use of herbs as companion therapy in hypertension may offer a promising complementary approach, but healthcare providers and patients should exercise caution and closely monitor the effects to ensure the optimal management of this chronic condition.

Abstract

Background: Age Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) or presbycusis is a hearing loss in the elderly that occurs gradually and symmetrically in both ears. One of the causes is dyslipidemia, which is a disorder of lipid levels in the body, including increased levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). High LDL levels trigger the formation of atherosclerotic plaque which causes reduced oxygen and nutrient supply to the ear labyrinth which causes hearing loss. Objective: To determine the relationship between increased LDL levels and presbycusis in patients with dyslipidemia at RSI Siti Rahmah. Method: This type of research is analytical observational research using a case control design and the type of data used is primary and secondary data using consecutive sampling techniques. Results: The most research subjects found were aged 60-69 years, the most male gender, the most LDL levels were in the high category and there is a significant relationship between increased LDL levels in elderly with dyslipidemia and the incidence of presbycusis (p = <0.000). Conclusion: There is a significant increase in LDL levels with presbycusis in elderly people with dyslipidemia at RSI Siti Rahmah (P value = 0.000) and elderly people with dyslipidemia with increased LDL levels have a 7 times greater risk of experiencing presbycusis compared to those who do not suffer from dyslipidemia.

Abstract

Gambir is a plant that has high economic value and antioxidant effects. Gambir leaves contain catechins as antioxidants. Suboptimal management of gambir weakens the economic value of gambir and has not achieved optimal antioxidant effects. The purpose of community service is to provide education and workshops on making gambir tea so that optimization of gambir management is achieved. This community service consists of three steps, namely problem discovery, education on making gambir tea and workshops on making gambir tea. The results of community service activities are in the form of problem discovery, optimization of gambir products in the form of gambir tea. The results of community service are that the community agrees to optimize gambir management by conducting education and workshops on making gambir tea which are attended by the village head and the Taluak Tigo Sakato Nagari apparatus. The conclusion of community service activities is that the Taluak Tigo Sakato community agrees to optimize gambir management by making gambir tea which goes through the stages of picking, washing, drying, grinding and packaging. The packaging chosen is the use of tea bags.

Abstract

Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection and a leading cause of death in children. It ranks as the primary cause of child mortality, accounting for 15% of all deaths in children under five, with 740,180 deaths reported in 2019. West Sumatra is the province with the second-highest number of pneumonia cases among children under five on Sumatra Island. This study aims to analyze the frequency distribution and characteristics of pneumonia cases in children under five and examine the relationship between nutritional status and the severity of pneumonia in children under five at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang in 2022–2023. This observational analytic study employed a cross-sectional approach, utilizing secondary data from the medical records of pediatric pneumonia patients. Data collection was conducted in October 2024. The population consisted of all children under five diagnosed with pneumonia at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang from 2022 to 2023. A total sampling technique was used, resulting in 52 respondents. Data analysis included univariate and bivariate methods, with the Chi-square test employed to determine statistical significance. The study found that most pneumonia cases occurred in children aged 1–11 months (66,0%) and were more common in males (57.7%). The majority of children had good nutritional status (64,0%), and (58,0%) experienced mild pneumonia. Bivariate analysis revealed a significant relationship between nutritional status and pneumonia severity (p = 0.033). This study concludes that nutritional status is significantly associated with the severity of pneumonia in children under five at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil Padang during 2022– 2023.

Abstract

Carrying a backpack that is excessively heavy can lead to negative effects, including pain in the shoulders, back, and waist. Additionally, it can cause postural changes due to alterations in the shape of the vertebrae. The goal of this Community Service Project (CSP) was to educate students at SMA 2 Padang about the proper use of backpacks, the appropriate weight for backpacks, and the negative effects of carrying overly heavy backpacks on the vertebrae. The method of CSP employed a pre-test and post-test method to measure knowledge retention. Throughout the activity, students received education and vertebral examinations. The key indicators for the CSP were the level of understanding gained regarding backpacks and the effects of excessive weight on vertebral health. The results of CSP indicated a significant increase in knowledge among the students at SMA 2 Padang, with all participants achieving perfect scores of 100 on the post-test. The vertebral examinations did not show any abnormalities, such as kyphosis or scoliosis. The conclusion of CSP successfully enhanced students' understanding of backpack weight and the potential negative impacts of carrying excessive weight on the vertebrae.

Abstract

Headset usage has become increasingly common today, facilitating work and communication. However, prolonged use of headsets, especially at high sound frequencies, can damage the hair cells in the cochlea, leading to permanent hearing loss. This condition is known as Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). This research employed a literature review of journals published between 2013 and 2025. The journals were searched using keywords such as "headphone hearing loss," "noise-induced hearing loss personal listening devices," "safe listening guidelines," and "hearing impairment headset." The search results were presented narratively. The study found that NIHL is prevalent across all continents and is closely associated with headset usage. Specifically, using headsets at high volumes and for extended periods can lead to NIHL. This issue is particularly significant among Generation Z, with various studies indicating instances of hearing loss. The study concluded that there is a direct relationship between hearing loss and headset use at sound levels exceeding 85 dB for more than 8 hours a day.
