Abstract

Serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels are an indicator of the body's vitamin D status. Vitamin D is physiologically involved in regulating blood pressure by regulating the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone system. Students are a group of young adult individuals who are at risk of being exposed to less sunlight, which means their 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are insufficient. Research objectives: This study aims to determine the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and blood pressure in students at the Faculty of Medicine, Baiturrahmah University. This research used an observational analytical method with a cross sectional design. The sample for this research was 58 students from the Faculty of Medicine, Baiturrahmah University, Padang, class 2020-2023. The largest gender was female, namely 42 people (72.4%), the highest age was 20 years (44.8%), the average 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was 24.49 ng/ml, the average systolic blood pressure was 119.14 mmHg, and the average diastolic blood pressure was 79.64 mmHg. The results of the Spearman correlation analysis of serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels with systolic blood pressure obtained values of r=0.22 and p=0.09, correlation analysis of serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D levels with diastolic blood pressure obtained values of r=0.03 and p=0, 79. Abstract

Background: Age Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) or presbycusis is a hearing loss in the elderly that occurs gradually and symmetrically in both ears. One of the causes is dyslipidemia, which is a disorder of lipid levels in the body, including increased levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL). High LDL levels trigger the formation of atherosclerotic plaque which causes reduced oxygen and nutrient supply to the ear labyrinth which causes hearing loss. Objective: To determine the relationship between increased LDL levels and presbycusis in patients with dyslipidemia at RSI Siti Rahmah. Method: This type of research is analytical observational research using a case control design and the type of data used is primary and secondary data using consecutive sampling techniques. Results: The most research subjects found were aged 60-69 years, the most male gender, the most LDL levels were in the high category and there is a significant relationship between increased LDL levels in elderly with dyslipidemia and the incidence of presbycusis (p = <0.000). Conclusion: There is a significant increase in LDL levels with presbycusis in elderly people with dyslipidemia at RSI Siti Rahmah (P value = 0.000) and elderly people with dyslipidemia with increased LDL levels have a 7 times greater risk of experiencing presbycusis compared to those who do not suffer from dyslipidemia.

Abstract

Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections remain a major public health issue in Indonesia, particularly among elementary school children. Behavioral and socioeconomic factors, including mothers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices, are suspected to influence the incidence of these infections. This study aimed to determine the relationship between mothers’ level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices and the incidence of STH infections among students of SD Negeri 23 Pasir Sebelah, Koto Tangah, Padang, in 2023. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 87 first to third-grade students and their mothers, selected through total sampling. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that 6.9% of the children were infected with STH. Most mothers demonstrated good levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices. There were significant associations between mothers’ knowledge (p=0.028), attitudes (p=0.000), and practices (p=0.000) and the incidence of STH infections. In conclusion, mothers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices were significantly associated with STH infections among elementary school children, highlighting the importance of family health education in preventing parasitic infections.

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) refers to a conscious effort by individuals to adopt healthy habits in their personal lives, within their families, and in the broader community. PHBS aims to prevent health problems through simple yet effective daily practices. The role of parents, the environment, and teachers is crucial in shaping students' behavior, especially during childhood. However, many elementary school students still lack sufficient knowledge about the importance of clean and healthy living habits. Therefore, educational initiatives are necessary to instill these positive behaviors from an early age. The session was carried out in an educational and interactive manner, incorporating direct practice, games, and quizzes. The PHBS education program took place at SDN 18 Bukit Kecil, Pesisir Selatan Regency, involving 30 student participants. The activity had a clear positive impact on students' knowledge and behavior regarding clean and healthy living practices. The success of the program was supported by strong collaboration between the community service team and the school. It is hoped that similar initiatives will continue to be implemented on a regular basis to cultivate a culture of clean and healthy living from an early age.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition in which hemoglobin (Hb) or red blood cell levels are lower than normal, generally due to iron deficiency. Hb plays an important role in delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body. The prevalence of anaemia in women aged ≥15 years is high globally, with Southeast Asia as the most common region. In Indonesia, anemia in adolescent girls is increasing, impacting growth, development, learning, and achievement. This study examines the relationship between knowledge and attitudes with anemia in MAN 1 Padang. The selection of MAN 1 Kuranji Padang was based on the high prevalence of anemia in the area, although there had been no similar research before. This study seeks the relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards anemia status in adolescent girls in MAN 1 Padang in 2024. The study used a cross-sectional design with primary and secondary data through purposive sampling techniques. The results showed that out of 87 respondents, 51 people (58.6%) had anemia, with the majority aged 16 years (79 people, 90.8%). The level of knowledge and attitude towards anemia was mostly in the poor category, as many as 54 people (62.1%) and 52 people (59.8%), respectively. Data analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude and anemia status (P-value 0.00 < 0.05). Most adolescent girls in MAN 1 Padang have a low level of knowledge and attitude towards anemia, which is related to the high prevalence of anemia in this group.

Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain a significant public health issue in developing countries, particularly among primary school children who are highly exposed to contaminated environments and often have inadequate personal hygiene practices. This study aimed to describe the presence of STH eggs in fecal samples of first- to third-grade students at SDN 23 Pasir Sebelah, located in Koto Tangah District, an area with historically high helminth infection rates. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, involving total sampling of 124 students. Fecal specimens were examined microscopically using the direct smear method. Results showed that 6 students (6.9%) tested positive for STH eggs. The species identified included Ascaris lumbricoides (50%), Trichuris trichiura (40%), and hookworm (10%). Infections were more frequently found in male students and those aged 7–8 years. Most infected children demonstrated poor personal hygiene, particularly related to handwashing, nail cleanliness, and consistent use of footwear. In conclusion, the prevalence of STH infection among students at SDN 23 Pasir Sebelah was relatively low; however, inadequate personal hygiene remains a key contributing factor. Strengthening health education and promoting proper hygiene practices are essential to reduce the risk of STH transmission in school-aged children

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out to support the acceleration of stunting reduction in Nagari Dusun Tangah, Solok Selatan Regency. Stunting is a public health problem that affects physical growth, cognitive development, and long-term productivity. This condition is primarily caused by inadequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy, improper child-feeding practices, recurrent infections, and poor environmental sanitation. The activity involved 22 participants, consisting of pregnant women and mothers of children under five. The methods used included interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations of locally sourced complementary feeding (MP-ASI), sanitation education, promotion of clean and healthy living behaviors, and basic training for posyandu cadres. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. The results showed positive responses and strong interest among participants in improving child-feeding practices and household hygiene. The MP-ASI demonstration using local ingredients such as eggs, freshwater fish, and homegrown vegetables was considered highly beneficial. The increase in participants' knowledge aligns with theoretical causes of stunting, particularly related to optimal nutrition, infection prevention, and sanitation. This activity also strengthened the capacity of posyandu cadres and enhanced collaboration between the puskesmas, local government, and the community. Overall, the socialization successfully improved family understanding of stunting prevention and is expected to serve as an initial step toward sustainable community-based nutrition interventions.
