Abstract

Work fatigue is a critical issue that can reduce productivity, increase the risk of occupational accidents, and negatively affect workers’ health, particularly among shift workers. Work fatigue is influenced by various factors, including inadequate nutritional status and nutrient intake. Security personnel are a vulnerable occupational group due to high alertness demands and circadian rhythm disruption caused by shift work systems. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design and involved the total population of security personnel working morning, afternoon, and night shifts (24 respondents per shift) at State University of Surabaya. Data collection instrument using the Industrial Fatigue Research Committee questionnaire, 2×24-hour food recall, microtoice, and a digital scale. The results showed significant associations between carbohydrate intake (p = 0.004; r = 0.334) and protein intake (p = 0.003; r = 0.346) with work fatigue levels, while energy intake, fat intake and nutritional status was not significantly associated with work fatigue among shift security personnel at State University of Surabaya. The findings of persistently deficient dietary intake, overweight nutritional status, and high levels of work fatigue particularly among night shift workers highlights the need for regular health monitoring of workers by the outsourcing company.

Abstract

Preschool children are those aged between 3-6 years. Eating behavior disorders that occur in children, such as picky eating, significantly impact their nutritional status, which is related to their growth and development. One of the eating problems in children, particularly in preschoolers, is picky eating, which affects their nutritional status. This study aims to determine the relationship between picky eating and nutritional status in preschool children at RA. Al-Hidayah in Surabaya. This research is quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. The respondents of this study were 40 children. Data collection techniques included self-administered questionnaires and measurements of height and weight. The instruments used were questionnaires, digital scales, and microtoise. Data analysis in this study used the Spearman rank correlation test with proportional random sampling. The results showed that 58% of subjects experienced picky eating. Most of the subjects in this study had normal weight, normal height, and good nutritional status. The analysis results indicated a significant relationship between picky eating and nutritional status based on weight-for-age (p-value = 0.019). However, there was no significant relationship between picky eating and nutritional status based on height-for-age (p-value = 0.619) and weight-for-height (p-value = 0.176). In overcoming the problem of picky eating, it is recommended for agencies to provide education or nutritional counseling to parents and caregivers so that they can implement appropriate parenting styles and pay attention to children's nutritional needs properly.

Abstract

Based on the findings of the Indonesian Nutritional Status Study Survey (SSGI), the growth rate of stunting in toddlers in East Java reached 19.2%. The prevalence of stunting in Wedoroanom Village is included in the highest category in Driyorejo District, Gresik Regency, reaching 36%. The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence of stunting, growth of gross motor skills, fine motor skills, and cognitive abilities, and to determine the relationship between these factors and the development of these skills in toddlers in Wedoroanom Village, Driyorejo District, Gresik Regency. This study used a cross-sectional technique and was quantitative. The sample consisted of 110 children aged between 12 and 60 months who were selected through a convenience sampling approach. Anthropometric measurements, interviews, and observations were used to obtain data. The chi-square test and odds ratio were used in data analysis to determine the relationship between variables. The study findings showed that the incidence of stunting and gross motor development were not related. However, there was a relationship between the incidence of stunting and cognitive and fine motor development. Chronic malnutrition, maternal education, maternal occupation, and history of exclusive breastfeeding are some of the factors that can cause developmental disorders in children. The findings of this study indicate that the incidence of stunting in Wedoroanom Village, Driyorejo District, Gresik Regency, is related to fine motor and cognitive development but not related to the development of gross motor functions.

Abstract

The management of blood glucose levels in individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus is a multifaceted process that involves the integration of pharmacological therapy and evidence-based nutritional interventions. Among these strategies, nutritional therapy plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal glycemic control and preventing diabetes-related complications. The success of nutritional therapy is closely tied to the individual’s adherence to prescribed dietary guidelines and the ability to meet adequate protein intake as recommended by healthcare providers. Protein is essential not only for maintaining muscle mass and supporting metabolic functions but also for its role in stabilizing blood glucose levels through slower glucose absorption and enhanced satiety. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between dietary adherence and adequate protein intake with fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels among outpatients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus at RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung. A quantitative research method with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 26 respondents selected using a non-probability sampling technique. Data collection utilized structured questionnaires to assess dietary compliance, interview forms to capture dietary behavior and protein intake patterns, and medical record documentation to obtain accurate FBG measurements. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlation tests for normally distributed data and Spearman rho tests for non-normally distributed data, ensuring appropriate analytical rigor. The results indicated a significant negative correlation between both dietary adherence and adequate protein intake with fasting blood glucose levels. This finding suggests that individuals who consistently follow dietary recommendations and consume sufficient protein tend to exhibit lower FBG values, indicating better glycemic control. Such results underscore the importance of not only emphasizing dietary compliance but also ensuring protein adequacy in daily nutritional plans for type 2 diabetes patients. These findings have practical implications for diabetes management programs, highlighting the necessity of sustained patient education, regular counseling, and individualized meal planning.

Abstract

Background: Children with ASD and ADHD are prone to malnutrition owing to their sensitivity to certain tastes, textures, or types of food, which can affect their eating patterns. This condition causes an imbalance in energy and macronutrient adequacy levels, which can affect nutritional status. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency, there are 3,2 million children with ASD in Indonesia, while the prevalence of ADHD in Indonesia reaches 26,4%. This study builds upon previous research, which has generally focused only on children with ASD. This study included a group of children with ADHD and was conducted in Ngawi Regency, where similar research is limited. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between eating patterns, energy adequacy, and macronutrients and the nutritional status of children with ASD and ADHD at Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat Public School for Special Needs, Ngawi. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design and a quantitative analytical approach. A total of 30 students with ASD and ADHD at Dr. Radjiman Wedyodiningrat Public School for Special Needs, Ngawi, were selected using total sampling, with the inclusion criterion being that parents were willing to be interviewed. Data collection will be conducted in July 2025. Children’s dietary patterns were assessed based on parents’ perceptions and feeding practices using the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ). Energy and macronutrient intakes were assessed using a validated Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire with cut-offs of ≤89% (deficit), 90%-119% (normal), and ≥120% (excess), while nutritional status was measured using body mass index-for-age (BMI-for-age). Data were analyzed using the chi-square or Fisher’s exact test if the chi-square assumption was not met. Results: Of the total respondents, 53% were malnourished. The analysis revealed no significant relationship between dietary patterns and nutritional status. There was a significant relationship between energy adequacy and nutritional status (p = 0,02; OR = 21,67; 95% CI=2,234-210,111). The OR value was quite large, which was likely influenced by the relatively small number of respondents in this study. In addition, there was no significant relationship between protein, fat, and carbohydrate adequacy and nutritional status. Conclusion: Energy intake among children with ASD and ADHD plays an important role in their nutritional status. Our study revealed the need for nutritional education interventions to improve energy balance and nutritional status in this population.

Abstract

Background : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases and is characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance accompanied by impaired insulin secretion. Breakfast plays an important role in daily glycemic regulation because both its energy contribution and macronutrient composition may influence glucose metabolism. Objective : This study investigated the association between breakfast energy proportion, macronutrient composition, and fasting blood glucose among pre-elderly outpatients with T2DM at Hospital X, Gresik. Methods : An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 70 participants recruited using accidental sampling. Breakfast intake was assessed using two non-consecutive 24-hour food recalls collected in different months, while fasting blood glucose values were obtained from medical records. Pearson's correlation test was applied to examine the relationships between variables. Results : The average breakfast energy contribution accounted for 19.46% of total daily energy requirements. The mean proportions of carbohydrate, protein, and fat were 53.24%, 17.54%, and 29.01%, respectively, whereas the mean fasting blood glucose level was 179.85 mg/dL. No significant associations were identified between breakfast energy proportion, macronutrient composition, and fasting blood glucose levels. Conclusions : Breakfast energy proportion and macronutrient composition were not associated with fasting blood glucose among pre-elderly patients with T2DM. Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain commonly experienced by adolescent girls and can interfere with daily activities and the learning process at school. Nutritional status and adequate intake of minerals particularly calcium, magnesium, and iron are factors believed to be associated with the occurrence of primary dysmenorrhea. This study aims to analyze the relationship between nutritional status and the intake of calcium, magnesium, and iron with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at Tenggarang State High School 1, Bondowoso Regency. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 86 female students in grades 10 and 11, selected using proportional stratified random sampling. Nutritional status data were obtained through anthropometric measurements and calculated based on age-adjusted body mass index (BMI-for-age). Data on calcium, magnesium, and iron intake were obtained using a non-consecutive 2×24-hour food recall, while data on primary dysmenorrhea were obtained using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test and Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed a significant association between nutritional status (p=0.004; OR=5.86), calcium intake (p=0.016; OR=7.17), and iron intake (p=0.002; OR=10.47) and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea. Meanwhile, magnesium intake did not show a significant association with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea (p=0.76). It can be concluded that nutritional status, calcium intake, and iron intake are associated with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls, whereas magnesium intake is not associated. Adolescent girls are advised to maintain a normal
