Abstract

Background: The use of smartphones among adolescents has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially using the internet daily, because adolescents do not have physical activities during the lockdown. Using the internet for doing assignments from school, using social media as a substitute for meeting with their friends directly, introducing new people and the internet for entertainment such as playing the game online, listening to music or watching a film. Purpose: This literature aimed to study the risk of internet addiction in adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic and know parents’ role to accompany adolescents while using the internet daily. Methods: A review of articles on internet use in adolescents during the pandemic was done to determine the risk of internet addiction. This article included article review, systematic review, research journals, qualitative and quantitative methods, and books. Meanwhile, the exclusion journals were not in English. The search of journals accessed from Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Science Direct with keywords ‘adolescents’, ‘internet addiction’, ‘parenting’, ‘education’ and ‘COVID-19’. Results: Internet use has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic and is at risk of causing addiction to adolescents. Unattended use of the internet and time restrictions from parents are at risk of causing internet addiction in adolescents. Conclusion: Internet use has been increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic and is at risk of causing addiction in adolescents. Time restriction and parental supervision are needed for adolescents to use the internet daily.

Abstract

Background: Inappropriate and excessive use of gadgets can cause addiction and interfere with physical, psychological, and emotional health, increase social isolation, and negatively affect development, especially in children. The resulting impact will be greatly influenced by the role of parents, family and the environment. Purpose: This study aims to understand what education can be provided to parents of children with gadget addiction, along with how parents can choose toys and alternative games for children to reduce this gadget addiction. Methods: The design used in this article was a narrative review that involved collecting and analyzing journals using the keywords "addiction", "children", "education", "parent" and "gadget"; this obtained 10 journal articles from PubMed, two journal articles from ScienceDirect, 14 journal articles from Google Scholar published between 2015–2020, three books, and one collection of survey data from the web. Results: There were several strategies that could be applied in managing the use of gadgets by children. The authoritative type of parenting style, good parent-child relationships, parent-child attachment and family environment conditions could also affect the use of gadgets and its impact on children. Parents could additionally provide toys and alternative games suitable for the children’s age, developmental ability and safety needs. Conclusion: Parents are expected to understand how to manage children with gadget addiction and how they can choose toys and alternative games for children to reduce gadget addiction.

Abstract

Background: In lieu of COVID-19, adolescents are forced to carry out their schoolwork, social and leisure activities online. Excessive internet use can have a negative impact on psychological, social, physical, spiritual, and financial well-beings. Such phenomenon is called internet addiction, and its highest prevalence is observed among adolescents with Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They have difficulty focusing on less attractive routines, thus they tend to have impaired daily functioning. So, internet addiction co-occuring with ADHD among adolescents warrants serious clinical attention. Purpose: This literature aims to study the risk factors and management of comorbidity of internet addiction with ADHD in adolescents. Methods: A literature review of studies investigating Internet Addiction Risk in Adolescent with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Non-English articles were set as the exclusion criteria.  Search criteria in this rewiew includes ‘internet addiction’, ‘ADHD’, ‘comorbidity’, and ‘adolescent’. Results: Adolescents with ADHD are at a heightened risk of developing internet addiction. Impulsivity, executive dysfunction, motivational dysfunction, social skill deficits and subpar attachment bonds were the primary reasons for the increased risk. Conclusion: Attempts to increase awareness on the internet addiction susceptibility among adolescents with ADHD, particularly in this COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Every year, sexual abuse against children is increasing. Globally, it is estimated that 3-31% of children had experienced sexual abuse. This harms children, including the impact of physical injury, neurobiological impact, and psychiatric, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, PTSD, drug abuse, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and attempted suicide. To help children who are victims of sexual abuse, a special approach is required to ease the communication to children. Since children communicate using symbols, thus storytelling, which is part of the Play Therapy technique, is the right method to communicate awareness to children. With an approach using the storytelling method, hopefully, children will be able to understand the very situations, recognize and express their emotions properly, and minimize the negative impact after the abuse.

Abstract

Introduction: The main symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. While temperament in children with ADHD is described as high in negative reactivity, low task persistence, high activity, low attentional focusing, high impulsivity and low inhibitory control. This study aims to analyze the correlation between children’s temperament and risk factor of ADHD.Methods: This study used cross-sectional design with Abbreviated Conners’ Rating Scale and Temperament in Middle Childhood questionnaire for instrument. All data are analyzed using Pearson correlation.Results: Prevalence of children with risks of ADHD from total subject was 21/114 students (18,4%, consisted of 18 males (81%) and 3 females (19%) with average age was 10 years old. The majority of participants were in the sixth grade (28.6%). There was a positive and weak correlation between surgency and ADHD symptoms (3,05 ± 0,75, p=0,045; r=0,44).Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between the negative affect and effortful control dimensions of temperament with severity of ADHD, however this study found a positive and weak correlation between surgency and risk factor of ADHD.

Abstract

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of depression and irregular dietary pattern amongst adolescent, especially women, has become an important issue today. A number of studies confirm that dietary pattern plays a role as one of the biological factors affecting mood regulation through the production of nerotransmitters, however, there are conflicting results regarding the matter in adolescent. This study aimed to examine the correlation between dietary pattern and depression in adolescent. Methods: This study was done through cross sectional analytical observational study in 89 high school students in SMAK St. Louis Surabaya. The data was gathered through two types of questionnaires filled by the respondents. The questionnaires were Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess dietary intake pattern and Beck Depression Inventory to assess the occurence of depression amongst the respondents. Results: The study showed high prevalence of irregular dietary pattern and depression within the sample. From Spearman correlation test, there is no correlation between dietary pattern and the prevalence as well as the degree of depression (p > 0,05). Conclusion: There is no correlation between dietary pattern and depression in adolescent. It may be caused by a lot of other factors contributing to the occurence of depression, including biological, psychological, and social factors.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder which includes: positive symptoms, negative symptoms, cognitive symptoms, affective symptoms and aggressive symptoms. Cognitive disorder is the most severe disorder compared to other symptoms of schizophrenia because it can interfere with daily functions, including memory function, attention function, problem solving function, speech function and social skills.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder that shows difficulties in communication, social interaction, behavior, interests and activities that are limited and repetitive. The prevalence of ASD also continues to increase worldwide, followed by an increase in the need for early intervention in ASD children. The limited services available make early intervention a challenge in itself. The long Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in limited therapy, because therapy in treatment service facilities cannot be carried out as before. In this case it is important to involve parents as the primary caregivers for ASD children in interventions to anticipate the limited interventions due to a pandemic situation. Parent Training can be done as an effort to provide information, education, and skills to parents so that they can provide intensive, comprehensive, sustainable, and early intervention.

Abstract

Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) merupakan gangguan neurodevelopmental yang ditandai dengan kesulitan memusatkan perhatian disertai hiperaktivitas dan impulsivitas, yang terjadi . Prevalensi global cukup tinggi diantara anak-anak, dan lebih dari setengahnya berlanjut hingga dewasa. Faktor genetik memegang peranan penting pada ADHD. Polimorfisme sejumlah gen ditengarai berperan pada sintesa molekuler bermasalah pada ADHD. Faktor lingkungan juga berhubungan dengan risiko ADHD. Paparan faktor lingkungan dapat memoderasi faktor genetik pada ADHD, dan demikian juga faktor genetik menyumbang kerentanan pada individu ADHD saat terpapar faktor risiko dari lingkungan. Interaksi faktor genetik dan lingkungan juga berkontribusi terhadap risiko ADHD, meski mekanisme interaksi kedua faktor ini belum diketahui secara pasti.

Abstract

Cornelia de Lange's syndrome (CdLS) is a genetic disorder characterized by developmental disorders in several organ systems, including the brain, bones, digestion, immunity, endocrine, and others. This syndrome is mainly caused by mutations in the NIPBL, SMC3, and SMC1A genes. CdLS are generally comorbid with developmental or intellectual-level disorders, autism spectrum disorders, self-injury behavior, difficulty speaking, anxiety, hyperactivity, and sleep problems. This CdLS has a significant impact on the quality of life and maladaptive function in patients, as well as causing psychological disorders for families. Therefore, the need for psychiatric assistance for family psychoeducation, psycho-social interventions and cognitive-behavioral education.
