Abstract

This research is motivated by the use of Sundanese language registers in the realm of football on the @Persib Instagram account. This study aims to determine the types and meanings of registers in the Persib Instagram account comments. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research methods with Sociolinguistic studies. The techniques used are observe and note.  Based on the results of the analysis that has been done, 12 registers of Sundanese language in the realm of football were found on the Persib Instagram account. The research shows that the registers that appear are at the level of words and phrases, and can be classified into two types: open registers and closed registers. The results show that some registers such as jaga aci, mapay gawir, nyerepet jaer, megat paray, cegat muntah, and moe anduk have limited meanings derived from vocabulary that refers to nature, food, and daily life of Sundanese people. Some of them are formed through Sundanese morphemic processes such as affixation (nyetadion) and dwipurwa reduplication (pipinaltian). While open registers are registers whose meaning is relatively broad, but when used in the realm of football experience specification of meaning through changes in referents. Examples such as nyintir, cokel, eupan, and pancong, which in the context of the match experience meaning specifications without changing the basic form.

Abstract

One of the distinctive features of the Sundanese language is the use of Kecap Anteuran (KA), or verb intensifiers. This linguistic feature often poses challenges when translating Sundanese into foreign languages, particularly European languages. However, we argue that Sundanese KA demonstrates a higher degree of translatability into Japanese, a language that also uses verb intensifiers similar to those found in Sundanese. In Japanese, words analogous to Sundanese KA are categorized as giongo-gitaigo, although the term onomatope is more commonly used. This study aims to identify Sundanese KA based on Tamori’s classification of Japanese onomatopoeia. Using a descriptive-qualitative approach, we examine (Sound [S] and Mentality [M]) onomatopoeia. The findings reveal that Sundanese onomatopoeic and non-onomatopoeic KA align with their respective Japanese counterparts as classified by Tamori, based on their associations with sensations, perceptions, emotional states, and the descriptions of activities.

Abstract

News about the election, particularly the 2024 presidential election, is currently becoming a hot topic, especially after the presence of three candidates from each political party. Understanding political conceptual metaphors is important because it can be useful for language research and teaching by providing new insights, it can also expand public knowledge about political situations through metaphors. The political parties promoting the candidates are Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI) Perjuangan, Partai Nasional Demokrat (Nasdem), and Partai Gerakan Indonesia Raya (Gerindra). The three candidates supported by these parties are Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Prabowo Subianto. Current information related to the presidential election is conveyed by media crews through online news sites, including Kompas.com. Previous studies have largely overlooked the 2024 presidential election and often did not employ lexical semantic theory in analyzing political metaphors, creating a gap that this research aims to fill. This research aims to describe the political concepts built through conceptual metaphors in the 2024 presidential election. The method of this research is descriptive-qualitative. Collecting data using note-taking techniques. The referential method was used to analyze data. The data sources from newspapers uploaded by Kompas.com online news sites in the period from June 2023 to January 2024. The results of the research show that there are five metaphorical concepts “Politics is a Plan”, “Politics is a Fight”, “Politics is a Defense”, “Politics is a Game”, and “Politics is a Marriage”.

Abstract

This study examines lexical external innovation in Sundanese in Babakan District, Cirebon Regency, a linguistic border area between Sundanese and Cirebon Javanese. The research aims to (1) identify external lexical innovations, (2) analyze the factors driving them, and (3) examine their sociolinguistic impact on language use. A descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative distribution analysis was employed. Data were collected from 200 lexical items based on the GSKSKB (a combined Swadesh and cultural vocabulary list) through fieldwork with native speakers. Findings reveal that 61 lexical items (30.5%) represent external innovations, primarily from Indonesian (22%) and, to a lesser extent, from Cirebon Javanese (8.5%). These innovations occur across core lexical domains, including body parts, kinship, and basic vocabulary, indicating that even a stable lexicon is susceptible to change. Distribution patterns show varying stages of diffusion, from localized occurrences to widespread adoption. The analysis suggests that external innovation is shaped by linguistic accommodation and language prestige. Indonesian, as a high-prestige national language, is the primary source of lexical borrowing, while Cirebon Javanese reflects localized influence. These innovations coexist with native Sundanese forms, creating lexical competition rather than immediate replacement. This study contributes to Sundanese dialectology by providing empirical evidence of external innovation in a border region and highlights the interplay between language contact, diffusion, and sociolinguistic adaptation.
