Abstract

This study aim to reveal the attitude change that are reflected through the story character written by Anton Chekov entitled “Fat and Thin”. Anton Chekov with his high-level imaginative mind can use narration in criticizing human behavior, especially the vertical nature of Russian society which likes to serve itself in positions and titles which are also known as "bootlickers". Changes in attitudes like this have even become a dilemma almost shared by many people around the world. This literary criticism is then explored more deeply by using the attitude change approach in psychology from Carl Hovland supported by the balance Heider theory. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with data collection and analysis techniques in librarian study. The results of this research indicated that the reflection of attitude change through the behavior of the two friends who are called fat and thin in the story. The two of them are childhood friends who have not seen each other for a long time. The change in attitude was evident from Thin's attitude, who knew that Fat was his military superior with the rank of lieutenant general. Such a situation makes Thin's behavior change a form of balancing as a defense mechanism of conditions. Chekhov, through his clear naration and dialogues, displayed this behavior very strongly. There are several factors that cause this change in attitude including psychological internal factors in the form of mental discomfort and personal dissonance, as well as external factors that influence in the form of interactions, situations and targets. This story describes an inner relationship because an idealistic friendship changes in attitude due to the vertical relationship factor that places a person as a bootlicker.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between humans and nature in the art of wooden talempong in Nagari Rangking Luluih, Solok Regency. Humans and nature are two inseparable entities. The natural environment determines human culture. Likewise, humans can change the natural environment in their efforts to adapt and utilize resources. Art is one of the universal elements of culture whose creation can also come from nature. One example is the wooden talempong. Therefore, the problem raised in this study is how the background of the creation and repertoire in wooden talempong represent the relationship between humans and nature. The data collection methods used are direct observation, in-depth interviews, documentation and literature studies. This data is then analyzed using the cultural ecology approach by Julian Steward who explains that there is an interaction between culture and the environment that takes place through the adaptation process. The results show that wooden talempong was born from a ritual tradition of gratitude for the people of Nagari Rangking Luluih for the harvest and a good life. Furthermore, the repertoire in the wooden talempong beat tones often describes the harmony of humans and nature. From here it is clearly seen that wooden talempong is not only an art that represents beauty alone. Moreover, in Minangkabau society there is a philosophy of "alam takambang jadi guru" which shows how important the role of nature is in various aspects of life.

Abstract

This research examines one cultural element in the form of talempong kayu art. There are seven elements of universal culture, one of which is art. Talempong is a typical Minangkabau art that has been passed down from generation to generation, one of which is in Nagari Rangking Luluih, West Sumatra. However, this talempong is different from talempong in general. Talempong is usually made of brass, tin and copper. Meanwhile, the talempong in Nagari Rangking Luluih is made of wood so it is called talempong kayu. Talempong kayu is no longer played much in West Sumatra. In general, Minang people play talempong which is made of copper and brass. However, in Rangking Luluih talempong kayu still exists and is often played on several occasions, especially during ritual ceremonies. Therefore, the aim of this research is to examine in more depth the talempong kayu representation, especially the background to its creation and the manufacturing process. The methods used in this research are direct observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The research results showed that in talempong kayu there is a reciprocal relationship between humans and nature in the process of creating a culture, as stated in cultural ecology. Talempong kayu is not only an art, but it also contains people's knowledge and technology about the surrounding natural environment so that talempong kayu can fulfill people's needs for beautiful sounds and rituals of gratitude for sufficient harvests and a good life. This ritual must be carried out as a form of harmonious human relationship with the natural environment.
