Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper aims to find out the strategies, applied by students in classroom interaction particularly in discussion, to maintain their interpersonal rapport as well as to enhance their rapport management with their fellow students. There are five strategies based on Spencer-Oatey (2008) that the interactants apply in social interactions. The strategies are request, compliments, apologies, gratitude and disagreement. The research is done to see whether the students realize the management of rapport in social interaction and their strategies that they would apply in classroom discussion. The research is done by using descriptive qualitative method to identify the students’ strategies in maintaining their interpersonal rapport and enhancing the rapport management with their fellow students. The data was obtained by video-recording the interactions of the students during the classroom discussions and by giving the students some questionnaires. The researcher also applied the participant observation to see the students reactions during the discussion considering that the strategies that the students apply may bring about the rapport threat and enhancement which are subjective evaluations, which depend not simply on the content of the message, but on people’s interpretations and reactions to who says what under what circumstances. The research indicates that the students’ mostly applied strategy is disagremeent and the type of the disagreement is token agreement. In other words, the students tend to hold the rapport enhancement behavior since in expressing their disagreement, they initially expressed their agreement as a token of appreciation. Abstract

This research aims to find out the effects of interruptions on rapport orientations. The data of the research were obtained from two meetings held in an educational institution in Makassar. The data were collected through a video recording of the meetings to identify the interruption use performed by the meeting participants and by giving the meeting participants the questionnaire containing questions concerning the use of the interruptions in the meetings. The data were then transcribed and extracted into several parts to be analysed. The data were also obtained by carrying out a participant observation by which the researcher obtained the meeting participants’ perceptions and their responses on the use of the interruptions during the meetings. This research indicates that the interruptions have a number of effects on the rapport orientations. There are two types of interruptions, i.e. competitive and cooperative interruptions. The interruption effects are primarily regarding to the enhancement and threats to the three interconnected rapport components which are: face, social rights and obligations, and interactional goals. The interruptions occurring also have several roles in the meetings which are closely related to the rapport management like clarifying and supporting main speakers’ points in the meetings, as the way to do relational work and back-channeling of the statement of the main speakers resulting in the type of rapport orientations applied by the meetings’ participants.

Abstract

Budaya dan kearifan lokal cerita rakyat mandar sekarang ini sangat memprihatinkan, dimana cerita rakyat mandar sangat langkah ditemui, buku yang menceritakan cerita rakyat mandar tidak ditemukan ditoko buku, buku cerita rakyat mandar yang ditemukan di rumah baca sangat sedikit, tidak bertahan lama, dan kurang menarik. Oleh karena itu, dalam rangka menumbuh kembangkan minat baca, sekaligus memperkenalkan dan melestarikan kearifan lokal cerita mandar menuju literasi digital maka melalui program pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang bermitra dengan salah satu rumah baca (PULPEN) melakukan sosialisasi mengenai cerita rakyat mandar yang di kemas dalam bentuk digital. Tujuan kegiatan ini memunculkan kembali kebudayaan, kearifan lokal cerita rakyat mandar yang sudah mulai terasingkan serta menjaga warisan bahasa daerah Mandar yang berada pada ambang kepunahan. Hasil sosialisasi ini memperkenalkan aplikasi cerita rakyat mandar berbasis android yang praktis dan menarik, disamping diskusi dan bedah buku cerita rakyat mandar bersama penulisnya untuk mengetahui nilai-nilai yang terkandung di dalamnya

Abstract

his study aims to find out the rapport management strategies to mitigate rapport threatening behaviors in social media interactions and to find out the effectiveness of the strategies. The social media platform from which the data was obtained is Facebook. There are a number of rapport threatening behaviors on the social media platform which are insult, criticism, cynicism, mockery, profanity, accusation, challenge, and blasphemy. These acts and expressions are considered to be threats to rapport since they can cause verbal conflicts and dispute in the interactions. This study found that these threats can be mitigated by rapport management strategies which comprise of five types of domains. This study, however, only found three domains of strategies and one newly found strategy in social media context. Most of the strategies are evidently effective to mitigate the rapport threats and consequently maintain the harmonious situation of the social media interactions

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji nilai-nilai keagamaan dan sosial yang terkandung dalam upacara Ngaben, sebuah ritual pemakaman tradisional Hindu Bali. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana nilai-nilai tersebut memengaruhi kohesi masyarakat dan pelestarian budaya di Bali. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui tinjauan pustaka dan wawancara dengan para pemimpin agama setempat dan anggota masyarakat. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa Ngaben bukan sekadar upacara pemakaman, tetapi praktik spiritual mendalam yang berakar pada filosofi Hindu, yang menekankan pelepasan jiwa (atma) untuk mencapai moksha (pembebasan). Secara sosial, upacara ini memperkuat ikatan komunal, karena melibatkan partisipasi kolektif dan tanggung jawab bersama di antara anggota keluarga dan desa. Selain itu, Ngaben berfungsi sebagai daya tarik budaya, yang meningkatkan daya tarik pariwisata Bali sambil mempertahankan makna sakralnya. Penelitian ini menyoroti peran ganda Ngaben sebagai kewajiban agama dan acara sosial budaya, yang menggarisbawahi pentingnya dalam mempertahankan identitas Bali di tengah modernisasi.

Abstract

This community service activity was held by the joint collaboration of English Education Department of Universitas Sulawesi Barat with The Practitioners Community of SD Negeri 035 Bussu, Polewali Mandar. The purposes of this activity were to enhance the strategy of teaching English as well as to build up the motivation to teach English for elementary school students for the teachers who were members of The Sharing Good Practices Community that was organized by a number of teachers in Bussu village, Tapango district of Polewali Mandar regency. This activity was held online on December 11, 2024 and had several ideas to increase the strategies of teaching English for elementary school students as the result. A few of the proposed strategies were the use of internet-based platforms to teach English for elementary school students and the use of audio-visual media to encourage students to learn English more actively.

Abstract

Metode pengabdian ini disusun untuk menjawab permasalahan rendahnya penguasaan ungkapan dan kosakata siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. tahap awal dilakukan melalui observasi kegiatan belajar dan interaksi siswa di sekolah yang menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan bahasa Inggris masih minim karena keterbatasan kosakata dan kurangnya media pendukung. temuan ini menjadi dasar perlunya media visual yang mudah diakses serta program penambahan kosakata yang berkelanjutan. Berdasarkan kebutuhan tersebut, tim merancang dan membuat media visual berisi ungkapan Bahasa Inggris sederhana yang relevan dengan aktivitas siswa di sekolah. Media diproduksi menggunakan bahan sederhana namun tahan lama lalu dipasang di 17 kelas pada posisi yang mudah terlihat agar siswa terpapar secara terus-menerus. Selain itu, program kosakata rutin diterapkan pada kelas binaan di mana setiap pertemuan siswa memperoleh sejumlah kosakata atau ungkapan baru yang harus dihafalkan dan disetorkan pada pertemuan berikutnya. Pelaksanaan program ini didukung dengan pendekatan pembelajaran berbasis pembiasaan dan konteks sehingga siswa tidak hanya menghafalkan kosakata, tetapi juga mempraktekkannya dalam komunikasi sehari-hari. Program melibatkan siswa guru bahasa Inggris dan tim asistensi mengajar dengan peran yang saling melengkapi. Secara keseluruhan metode ini diharapkan mampu meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata memperkuat lingkungan kelas yang mendukung penggunaan bahasa Inggris, serta menumbuhkan kebiasaan berkomunikasi sederhana dalam bahasa Inggris di lingkungan sekolah. The service method was designed to address the problem of students’ low vocabulary mastery of English expressions. The initial stage was carried out through observations of learning activities and student interactions at school, which showed that the use of English was still minimal due to limited vocabulary and the lack of supporting media. These findings became the basis for the need for easily accessible visual media and a sustainable vocabulary enrichment program. Based on these needs, the team designed and created visual media containing simple English expressions relevant to students’ daily activities at school. The media were produced using simple yet durable materials and installed in 17 classrooms at easily visible locations so that students could be continuously exposed to them. In addition, a routine vocabulary program was implemented in the target classes, in which at each meeting students received a number of new vocabulary items or expressions to memorize and submit at the following meeting. The implementation of this program was supported by a habituation-based and contextual learning approach, so that students not only memorized vocabulary but also practiced using it in daily communication. The program involved students, English teachers, and the teaching assistance team, with complementary roles. Overall, this method is expected to improve students’ vocabulary mastery, strengthen a classroom environment that supports the use of English, and foster the habit of simple communication in English within the school environment.

Abstract

Enhancing academic literacy remains a major challenge in promoting scientific publication productivity in Indonesia, particularly in internationally reputable journals such as Scopus. This article describes the implementation and evaluation of a national webinar entitled “Write It Right: Strategies for Writing Scopus-Indexed Scientific Articles,” organized by the English Education Study Program of Universitas Sulawesi Barat. The webinar aimed to strengthen the academic capacity of lecturers, students, and education practitioners in writing scientific articles that meet international standards. The event was conducted online via the Zoom Meeting platform on January 30, 2025, featuring experienced speakers in the field of international publication. A total of 407 participants registered, with 334 participants attending until the end of the session. The event evaluation was carried out through an online form, covering participants' satisfaction with the material, the speaker’s delivery, and the relevance of the content to their academic needs. The evaluation results indicated a high level of satisfaction, with most participants reporting that they gained practical insights and new motivation for writing scientific articles. Participant feedback also revealed that the webinar enhanced their understanding of scientific writing strategies and opened opportunities for future research collaboration. These findings underscore the importance of organizing online academic training as an effective strategy to strengthen the culture of scientific literacy within higher education institutions.

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains a persistent challenge in Indonesian EFL classrooms, where conventional instruction frequently fails to sustain meaningful student engagement with written texts. This study examined the effectiveness of Prezi, a web-based, zoomable presentation platform, as a digital teaching medium for improving eighth-grade students' reading comprehension, and explored student perceptions toward its use. A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was employed, involving 48 students from two intact classes at SMP Negeri Mapilli, West Sulawesi, assigned to either Prezi-based instruction or conventional teaching across four treatment sessions. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests measuring literal, inferential, and critical reading comprehension, and a validated 14-item Likert-scale perception questionnaire. An independent sample t-test revealed a statistically significant between-group difference (t(46) = 6.311, p = .000), with the experimental group achieving a mean post-test score of 75.83 compared to 57.71 in the control group. The N-Gain score of 60.66% indicated sufficiently effective learning gains attributable to Prezi-based instruction. Student perceptions were strongly positive, yielding an overall score of 81.07%, classified as Very Successful. These findings suggest that Prezi holds meaningful pedagogical value as an engaging multimodal medium for EFL reading instruction in Indonesian junior high school contexts.
