Abstract

Critical thinking is a vital skill for students to interpret data and make informed decisions, especially in data presentation. This study focuses on developing and evaluating animated video-based learning content using Powtoon software to enhance critical thinking skills in data presentation, following the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) instructional design model. In the Analyze phase, a needs assessment was conducted to identify gaps in students' critical thinking skills regarding data interpretation. During the Design and Develop phases, instructional videos were created to target key critical thinking components, including analysis, interpretation, and evaluation. In the Implement phase, the content was introduced to an experimental group, with a control group using traditional instructional methods. A quasi-experimental approach with pre- and post-tests measured critical thinking improvements in both groups. Results demonstrated a significant increase in critical thinking abilities within the experimental group, with mean scores improving from 55.2 to 82.4, compared to the control group’s increase from 54.8 to 65.3. The study concludes that Powtoon-animated videos are an effective tool for fostering critical thinking in data presentation, offering practical implications for multimedia-assisted learning in mathematics education. Recommendations for further research on technology integration in education are discussed.

Abstract

Mathematics learning at the high school level, particularly in probability, is often considered challenging because it is abstract and lacks real-world context.  As a result, many students memorize formulas without understanding their applications, which makes it difficult to solve problems.  To address these challenges, innovative learning media are needed that not only provide a variety of practice questions but also link local culture through an ethnomathematics approach, bridging abstract concepts with students' real-life experiences to make learning more meaningful, engaging, and effective in improving problem-solving abilities.  This study aims to describe the development process of Probabilo Tour, an ethnomathematics-based learning media designed to support the problem-solving abilities of high school students.  The research method used is research & development, utilizing the ADDIE development model (analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate).  The trial involved expert validation and practicality testing through student response questionnaires and learning outcome tests administered to 35 10th-grade students.  The results showed that Probabilo Tour obtained an average validity score of 82.94% (very valid), a student response rate of 84.5% (efficient), and a learning completion rate of 91.18% among students, with a classical average of 88 (effective).  The N-gain analysis produced 0.73 (high category), indicating a significant increase in problem-solving ability.  Thus, Probabilo Tour is suitable for use as an ethnomathematics-based learning medium that supports high school students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Keywords: Learning media, Ethnomathematics, Problem Solving

Abstract

Technology that continues to develop requires teachers to continue to innovate in presenting quality learning media. Mobile learning is a medium that can be used in learning because of the ease in the process of using it anywhere and anytime. On the other hand, critical thinking is a very important ability in mathematics. Through critical thinking skills, students are required to be able to generate thoughts and choose the right steps to solve a problem. However, the results of the field study show that students' critical thinking skills in material on compositional and inverse functions are still very low. This study aims to develop mobile learning named KORS to train students' critical thinking skills in the matter of compositional and inverse functions. This type of research is development research with the ADDIE model. The subjects of this study were practitioners and six high school students. In collecting data, assessment instruments were used by media experts and material experts, as well as student and teacher response questionnaires. The results of this study obtained KORS mobile learning media that were feasible to use with a percentage of 79% from media experts and 78.67% from material experts. The practicality of the media from the teacher's assessment obtained a percentage of 83.33% and based on the results of small-scale trials obtained a student response questionnaire percentage of 82.67%.
