Abstract

This research departs from the problem of low active participation of foreign learners in the interaction of Indonesian learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), especially those who are members of the Developing Countries Partnership (KNB) program. The verbal constraints they experience are not solely related to language skills, but also closely related to sociocultural, psychological, and pedagogical factors that affect their comfort in classroom interactions. This study aims to identify and describe the interaction obstacles faced by KNB foreign learners in BIPA learning and the factors that affect them as a whole. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques such as participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The research subjects consist of international students receiving KNB scholarships and participating in the BIPA program at one of the public universities in Indonesia. The data were analyzed thematically, emphasizing interaction patterns, verbal responses, and adaptation strategies used by learners in the learning context. The results show that the main obstacles in learning interactions come not only from the limitations of vocabulary and sentence structure, but also from the fear of making mistakes, lack of understanding of local communication norms, and lack of pedagogical support that is responsive to the learner's cultural background. These findings confirm the importance of developing BIPA learning strategies that are more inclusive, interactive, and based on intercultural awareness. This research provides theoretical and practical contributions to the development of BIPA teaching and opens up space for further studies in the realm of cross-cultural interaction in language education.

Abstract

Discussing the values of character education basically involves efforts that are consciously realized to improve attitudes or morals. This paper aims to explain the values of character education in the Serat (script)of Pamardining Siwi Wira Iswara KBG 702, later known as script of Wira Iswara (WI). This is also to see its relevance in the teachings of the Qur'an, through a textual and contextual understanding study. The focus of this research is how the value of character education is in the Wira Iswara script which has relevance to the Qur'an. The method used is qualitative with a philological approach. The research data were then analyzed using content analysis. The results of this study indicate that the value of character education contained in Wira Iswara script is derived from the values of the Qur'an which include: 1) the value of mutual love or affection, 2) agile, 3) careful, 4) careful, 5) good at counting, 6) diligent, 7) frugal, and 8) seriousness of intention or earnest. These values are qur'ani morality that is implicitly recorded in the Wira Iswara manuscript.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) instruction from a deep learning standpoint, with an emphasis on determining lecturer dominance patterns and Thai students' levels of cognitive participation. With an inherent case study design, a qualitative technique is employed. A discourse analysis framework developed by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975) and deep learning indicators developed by Marton and Säljö (1976) and Biggs and Tang (2011) were used to record, transcribe, and analyze utterances from learning encounters at an Islamic university in Indonesia. The study's conclusions show that the conventional Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) structure dominates the communication pattern, which underlies the low student participation (86.5%) and the predominance of lecturer speech (70.1%). Variations in patterns, however, including IRF(IR), IIRF, and particularly I→R→I, have been demonstrated to foster a dialogue space that promotes higher-level cognitive engagement, including cultural comparison and critical reflection. The flexibility of communication patterns that permit meaning negotiation and student elaboration, rather than a single pattern, determines the quality of deep learning in BIPA, according to the study's findings. In practice, this means that BIPA teachers must intentionally create communication tactics that encourage student initiative and introspection in order to make the BIPA classroom a meaningful and dialogic micro-diplomatic environment.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the tradition of copying Qur'anic exegesis manuscripts in Rembang, Central Java, and explores the potential of digitizing these manuscripts for educating students in contemporary Islamic education. Historically, Javanese ʿulamāʾ employed the Javanese language and the Arabic–Javanese (Pegon) script to reinterpret Qur'anic meanings for communities that did not master Arabic. Existing studies mainly discuss codicology and textual features, but very few connect Javanese kafirī manuscripts to pedagogical innovation; this becomes the research gap addressed in this study. Methodologically, the research applies philological analysis, followed by digitalization, to evaluate their relevance to materials grounded in local wisdom. The findings show that these manuscripts have high historical value and strong contextual relevance to Islamic education. Digitalization expands access for the younger generation and enables their integration into a more adaptive IRE curriculum. Thus, digitalization has become a strategic tool for preserving Islamic intellectual heritage while reinforcing Islamic education.

Abstract

This article examines the Turkish Istanbul Mini Qur'an preserved by Mbah Hasan Pati, an antique printed muṣḥaf circulating in the Indonesian archipelago, from a codicological perspective. While codicological studies have largely focused on handwritten Qur'anic manuscripts, antique printed muṣḥafs owned by private collectors remain understudied despite their historical significance. This study aims to identify the provenance of the muṣḥaf, describe its material and typographical features, and analyze its historical and religious significance within the transmission of printed Qur'ans in the Malay-Indonesian world. Employing qualitative field research with a descriptive-analytical approach, the study applies codicological analysis based on direct observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the muṣḥaf is an authentic Turkish Istanbul printed Qur'an displaying the distinctive features of Ottoman miniature Qur'ans. Its presence in Indonesia reflects the transregional circulation of Ottoman printed Qur'ans and demonstrates the enduring historical, cultural, and religious value attributed to such artefacts by local Muslim communities. Although it is not a handwritten manuscript, this printed muṣḥaf constitutes an important codicological object that broadens the scope of Qur'anic codicology beyond manuscript culture to include early printed Qur'ans. The study underscores the importance of preserving antique printed muṣḥafs as part of the documentary heritage of the Qur'an in the Indonesian archipelago.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to construct and evaluate an AI-based Indonesian–Malay bilingual dictionary by incorporating ML and NLP techniques through SLR. This research investigates salient issues in bilingual lexicography at the level of lexis, including limited parallel corpora, contextual semantic variability, and cultural nuances between closely related tongues. Methods: A mixed-methodology, pairing a systematic literature review (SLR) of 18 peer-reviewed studies published from 2020 to 2025 with an experiment based on prototypes. As a result of these findings, we created a mini prototype dictionary via ML-based semantic-mapped supervised and unsupervised models and Transformer representations. We evaluated the prototype using objective measures of translation accuracy and qualitative analysis of errors. Result: NLP and ML techniques are found to be effective in word-level bilingual dictionary building when integrated. Unlike direct equivalence approaches, which neglect contextual understanding in the representation of meaning groups, transformer-based representations capture high degrees of alignment in semantic generality through context. Our prototype produced suitable accuracy for most common lexical entries but struggles with informal expressions due to cultural nuances and underrepresentation of Indonesian–Malay parallel data. Novelty: This study contributes by bridging the existing literature by linking systematic review findings with an empirical implementation in the form of a functional AI-based dictionary prototype, demonstrating that combined machine learning models are effective for Indonesian–Malay lexicography and providing a repeatable framework for AI-driven bilingual dictionaries between other language pairs.

Abstract

Javanese-language Quranic exegesis manuscripts written in the Arabic-Pegon script represent an intellectual heritage of Islam in Indonesia; however, their use in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) remains limited due to challenges regarding readability, accessibility, and pedagogical integration. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of manuscripts LSM 011 and LSM 012 and to explore the transformation of their digitized versions into learning resources for the sub-topic "The Authenticity of the Qur'an." A qualitative approach was employed using a case study design integrated into a Research and Development (R&D) framework based on the ADDIE model. Data were gathered through manuscript observation, semi-structured interviews with philologists and manuscript collectors, philological analysis, and classroom observations during the module implementation phase. The results indicate that both manuscripts utilize the Javanese language in Arabic-Pegon script, employing the interlinear translation pattern. Digitization yielded four key transformations: manuscript preservation, enhanced accessibility, improved readability, and the integration of manuscript content into the IRE module. Classroom observations revealed that the module fostered student engagement and comprehension by leveraging familiar linguistic and cultural contexts. These findings underscore digitization as a process that encompasses both preservation and pedagogical transformation. Consequently, local manuscripts can be developed into accessible, contextually relevant PAI learning resources. The study contributes by expanding the function of digitization from mere preservation to pedagogical application rooted in local cultural heritage.
