Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential of Sabang Free Port as a transshipment hub within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and to identify the challenges and opportunities for its development. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. Data is collected through literature review, policy document analysis, and interviews with stakeholders, including academics and maritime industry practitioners. The findings indicate that Sabang Port has a strategic geographical advantage along the Malacca Strait and deep waters that support large vessels. However, infrastructure limitations, low trade activity, and minimal investment pose significant obstacles to its development. The discussion highlights the need for infrastructure improvements, investment promotion, and policy reinforcement to attract more maritime industry players. The study concludes that while Sabang has the potential to become an international transshipment hub, a comprehensive strategy from both the government and private sector is required to enhance its competitiveness. The successful implementation of appropriate policies will determine Sabang’s role in supporting global maritime connectivity through the BRI.

Abstract

Political literacy refers to the ability of individuals to understand political systems, processes, and information to actively participate in political decision-making. For first-time voters, political literacy is crucial as it forms the foundation for making rational choices, particularly in the 2024 regional elections (Pilkada). This community engagement initiative aims to enhance the level of political literacy among first-time voters through socialization, political literacy education, and comprehension tests covering four key indicators: understanding the political system, knowledge of the Pilkada process, critical evaluation of political information, and participation in Pilkada. The study employed a Google Form-based questionnaire distributed to 40 respondents from 11th and 12th-grade students in both science (IPA) and social sciences (IPS) streams. The analysis results revealed that the average comprehension level of respondents ranged between 70% and 85%, with minor variations across indicators and groups. Respondents demonstrated strong understanding in the "Knowledge of the Pilkada Process" indicator but showed the need for improvement in "Critical Evaluation of Political Information." These findings underscore the importance of strengthening political literacy, particularly in combating misinformation that becomes prevalent ahead of elections. By improving political literacy, first-time voters are expected to become agents of change who promote healthier democracy through active and critical political participation.

Abstract

This paper examines how national institutional environments shape the behavior of multinational corporations, with a focus on McDonald’s operations in Indonesia. Using Institutional Theory as the primary analytical framework, the study examines how international businesses react to various institutional pressures, including formal regulations, religious mandates, and informal cultural expectations. Through a qualitative case study approach, the research finds that McDonald's modified its operations to adhere to domestic sourcing regulations, fulfill halal certification standards, and accommodate regional dietary preferences and social norms. These adaptations reflect broader processes of institutional negotiation and legitimacy-building that go beyond market strategy. This research contributes to the literature on institutional theory and public governance by illustrating how deeply embedded regulatory and normative systems in emerging economies shape the strategic and operational choices of multinational firms. The findings offer actionable insight for policymakers aiming to guide foreign business conduct through institutional design, and for companies seeking legitimacy and stability in governance-intensive settings. By showing how public policy instruments and societal expectations interact to form a dynamic institutional environment, the study demonstrates how governments in emerging economies can steer globalization in ways that reinforce national values and development priorities
