Abstract

Errors committed by the students while studying English as a foreign language can show the students’ difficulty and be the basis of planning the proper strategy in the teaching and learning process. Therefore, this study aimed at finding out the causes of pronunciation errors in speaking skill committed by EFL learners and discovering the solutions for both students and teachers. It focused on analyzing the causes of pronunciation errors using a diagnosis proposed by Carl James. The method used in this study was a case study. Twenty non-majoring English students from International Tourism College got involved as the subject of this research. The data were collected from documentation of speaking diagnostic test results and interviewing the participants based on the test result. The findings reported that there were three causes of pronunciation errors, namely interlingual, intralingual, and communication strategy-based error. For the solution, the learners and teachers are suggested to develop the learning quality by improving the learners’ motivation to use the target language more often everywhere. Hence, this error analysis can be a reference in designing a learning strategy in teaching speaking.

Abstract

Lecturers as educators at universities should speak according to the norms or maxims of language politeness as a form of providing an example for students in speaking politely. Therefore, this research aims to examine language politeness which is indicated in everyday conversations in the academic sphere, especially conversations between lecturers in universities. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by collecting data through observation and conversation notes. The data analysis technique consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and analysis, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research found that there are 5 maxims of language politeness that are carried out in the lecturer's room by lecturers in the Public Administration Study Program in daily conversations. The maxims found consisted of two maxims of generosity, one maxim of appreciation, one maxim of simplicity, one maxim of consensus, and one maxim of sympathy, while the maxim of wisdom was not found during research data collection.

Abstract

This study discusses the conceptual design process of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) featuring Long Endurance Low Altitude (LELA) characteristics, intended for long-range surveillance missions. The design is based on a quantitative approach through the estimation of initial performance parameters such as wing loading, power loading, maximum lift coefficient (CLmax), and lift-to-drag ratio (L/D). Technical data were obtained from literature and preliminary numerical calculations, then used to determine the main geometric dimensions and power requirements of the aircraft. The design results show that a UAV with a take-off weight of 15.08 kg, wing area of 0.2317 m², and cruise power of 67.34 Watts is capable of flying for 79 minutes with an L/D ratio of 13.69. The center of gravity (CG) is located 0.454 m from the aircraft nose, indicating good longitudinal stability. This research provides an essential early- stage contribution as a foundation for further development in the preliminary design phase.

Abstract

Exploring students’ errors can reveal the students’ knowledge about the target language, and the teacher then can focus on the students’ learning problems. Speaking is considered the most like to contain errors among the four language skills. This study aimed at investigate pronunciation and grammatical errors committed by EFL learners in speaking skills. It focuses on classifying pronunciation and grammatical errors using the Target Modification Taxonomy proposed by Carl James. The method used in this study was a case study. In a total, 20 students in an International Tourism College in Aceh were involved as participants. The data were collected by recording the students’ utterances in a speaking test. Findings indicate that there were four types of pronunciation errors and five types of grammatical errors. In pronunciation errors, the learners committed errors in omission, overinclusion, misordering, and misselection. In terms of grammatical errors, the students made mistakes in omission, overinclusion, misordering, misselection, and blends. These findings highlight the influence of students’ first language (Indonesian) and insufficient exposure to English input. Pedagogically, the results suggest that teachers should integrate minimal pair drills to address common pronunciation problems and provide explicit instruction on subject-verb agreement through focused practice activities
