Abstract

This research investigated the students’ writing skill on recount text at session at session 2016 A English Department of STKIP West Sumatera. Some of them had difficulties in organization, content, grammar, mechanic, and vocabulary. Then, they really need lecturers’ correction in every step of their writing process. Therefore, the researcher applied peer editing technique as the focus of research to solve this problem. The purposes were to find whether peer editing technique can improve students’ writing skill on Recount Text and some factors influence the improvement. The methodology of research is a classroom action research (CAR). Researcher used writing test and questionnaire as the instruments. The finding of the research showed that the students’ writing skill of recount text improves through Peer Editing technique and there are four factors influenced the improvement.

Abstract

The problem in this study is why students are not disciplined in online learning at SMK Taman Siswa Padang. Starting from the problems above, this study aims to analyze the reasons students do not discipline in online learning. This type of research is qualitative; the participants of this research are students of class XII TKR (Light Vehicle Engineering) at SMK Taman Siswa Padang in the academic year 2021/2022. The instruments used in this study were Questionnaires and Interviews. To test the validity of the data, the researcher combined the results of the Questionnaire and Interview. Next in doing the analysis. The results showed that students who were not disciplined in online learning at SMK Taman Siswa Padang were: 1. did not like online learning 2. did not care about online learning 3. there was no student interest in online learning 4. there was no student motivation in online learning.

Abstract

The students' writing skill of News Item text at grade X5 of SMAN 3 Padang was low. Some of them had difficulties in organization, content, grammar, mechanic, and vocabulary. Then, they really need teachers' correction in every step of their writing process. Therefore, the independent writing should be applied in each part of the writing process. Especially, in editing process the students have to be independent in order to increase their sensitivity on their writing product. Peer editing technique seems to be one of the effective teaching techniques to foster learners' independence in order to develop their writing skill. Therefore, the researcher applied this technique to solve those problems. This is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants of the research were the students of grade X5 of SMAN 3 Padang which consisted of 30 students. This research was conducted in two cycles, which each cycle has four meetings. The researcher was helped by a collaborator. Researcher used writing test, observation checklist and field note, questionnaire and interview as the instruments. The findings showed that the students' writing skill of News Item text are developed through peer editing technique and factors that shaping students' independence through peer editing technique are connecting reading and writing, authentic and interactive activities, and teacher's technique that covered teaching learning process from planning stage to revising stage. In conclusion, applying peer editing technique can shape students' independence to develop their writing skill of News Item text.

Abstract

The  purposes  was  to  find  whether  Diary Writing and Peer  Editing  Technique can  improve students’ writing skill on Recount Text. The methodology of research is a classroom action research (CAR).  This research was conducted in one cycle, which has six meetings. The researcher was helped by two collaborators.  Researcher used writing test, observation checklist, and field note, as the instruments. The findings  of the research showed  that  the  students’  writing  skill  of  Recount Text improved  through  Diary Writing and Peer  Editing  Technique. The implications related to this research the lecturers are suggested to use Diary Writing and Peer Editing Technique to help students to be independent writer and for the next researcher to use this technique in others kinds of texts.

Abstract

 Abstract : This study discusses students' interest in learning English subjects using the Canva application as a learning medium used by English teachers at SMA N 2 Batang Anai. This study aims to describe students' interest in learning English subjects using the Canva application as a learning medium. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this study were 70 students of class I majoring in science at SMA N 2 BATANG ANAI which were determined through purposive sampling technique. This instrument is in the form of observations by taking field notes and video recordings, questionnaires, and interviews. In this study, the researcher collected data by distributing questionnaires via google form and distributing questionnaires to 70 students, as well as recording student activities and conducting interviews with several students. Students' learning interest can be seen through 4 indicators, namely, Happy Feeling (students feel happy in learning), Attention (students' attention in learning), Interest (students' interest in learning) and Student Involment (students are actively involved in the learning process). From the data analysis, the writer can conclude that the use of Canva application as a teacher's media in learning media can increase students' interest in learning and based on the analysis, students' interest in using Canva application as an English learning medium is very high.  Keywords: Canva application, Learning media, Learning in interest

Abstract

The aim of this research is  describing and explaining  the choice of words in politeness of refusal at Penelope movie. Research problem in this research is to find and analyze the choice of the words in poleteness of refusal at Penelope movie. There are three steps that are used in this research, they are collecting data, analyzing data and presenting the result of analyzing. In the collecting data, data were collected by observational method. This method was followed by non-participatory observational, recording and note taking technique. After collecting data, data were analyzed by using identity and distributional method. In addition, the results of data analysis were described by using formal and informal method. There are several the choice of word in politeness of refusal that were found in Penelope movie, such as sorry, please, thank, the modal of could, tag question, and negative interrogative sentence.

Abstract

This research investigated students’ belief on learning English as a foreign language at Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Based on the learner-centered approaches to foreign language teaching, it is important for teacher to understand about students’ prior knowledge and experiences, expectations, and attitudes towards language learning. Belief as part of attitude can influence students’ way of thinking, feeling, or making sense of the learning process. Thus, the teachers need to know about students’ belief. The purpose was to find what beliefs about language learning do Social Science Department students hold? The methodology of research is descriptive quantitative research. It describes the phenomena about students’ belief in the field. This study examines all students in Social Science Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat which totally 10 students. The data were taken form a questionnaire. The findings of the research showed that English subject in campus is not enough for students to develop their English ability. However, they belief that they have a special ability in learning English. The results also showed that some students have belief which in learning English students have to know the culture of the native speaker, have good grammar, pronunciation and practice regularly.
