Abstract

Education for students with intellectual disabilities presents its challenges, especially in meeting their needs for developing life skills. This research aims to create an environmentally friendly vocational skills learning model to increase the self-development of students with intellectual disabilities. This model was designed using the Research and Development (R&D) method involving teachers and students in SLB. This type of research is qualitative. The samples involved in this research were teachers and students at SLB. The data collection methods used were observation and field trials. Data were analyzed using Miles & Huberman's interactive analysis technique, which included data reduction, presentation, and concluding/verification. The research results show that this learning model can effectively increase student independence by making doormats from patchwork, which uses the concept of recycling. The learning process not only grows students' practical abilities, but also teaches the values of caring for the environment. In this research, the environmentally friendly vocational skills learning model developed is feasible and effective for improving the self-development of students with intellectual disabilities. This model was designed considering student characteristics, practice-based learning principles, and an inclusive and sustainable environmental approach. This research has implications for improving the quality of education in special schools by providing innovative environment-based learning alternatives.

Abstract

The shift in learning models following the COVID-19 pandemic, which occurred without adequate preparation, has added new challenges for students with special needs. As an educational institution in an urban area, Jakarta State University should be an ideal example of an inclusive campus. Although opportunities for students with special needs to enroll have expanded, this has not been matched by specific preparations for learning accommodations. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by students with special needs in obtaining appropriate learning accommodations. Additionally, this study seeks to explore the shift in learning accommodation needs of students with special needs post-pandemic COVID-19. A mixed-method research approach was selected, with quantitative data as the primary focus. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, while quantitative data analysis utilized descriptive statistical analysis. The research subjects consisted of 34 students with special needs from eight faculties, enrolled between 2018 and 2024. The students with special needs involved in this study had visual impairments, hearing impairments, physical impairments, low vision, ADHD, learning difficulties, and autism. The results of the study showed diversity in learning accommodation needs for each type of special need. However, these differences could be predicted based on the type and level of special needs. The five aspects studied—course materials, teaching methods, facilities and equipment, peer support, and the need for self-regulation skills—highlight the importance of further attention from the university. These aspects of learning accommodations reflect a shift in learning modes influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift adds challenges for students with special needs in preparing themselves for the workforce.

Abstract

This study aims to describe teachers’ strategies in implementing Civics Education (PPKn) learning for students with physical and motor impairments in inclusive elementary schools. The research was motivated by the challenges teachers face in creating fair and participatory learning for all students, particularly those with limited physical abilities who often experience barriers in mobility, accessibility, and classroom participation. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis with five Civics teachers from three inclusive elementary schools in East Jakarta. The findings revealed that teachers adopted adaptive strategies through the modification of lesson plans, the use of visual and digital media, and the application of participatory methods involving peer buddies. The main challenges identified were limited school facilities, time constraints, and insufficient inclusive pedagogy training. These issues were addressed through collaboration among classroom teachers, special education teachers, and school principals. The study concludes that strong collaboration within the school community is essential to achieving inclusive PPKn learning, as it fosters empathy, tolerance, and appreciation for diversity. Effective strategies in inclusive Civics Education must emphasize adaptation, collaboration, and humanization as tangible manifestations of Pancasila values in the classroom.

Abstract

Parents' and teachers' unrecognized talents and learning difficulties in children between the ages of two and five often cause children to lose opportunities to develop according to their potential and talents. Parents' and teachers' lack of understanding of the learning difficulties experienced by gifted children causes them to fail to achieve their potential. To reduce the failure rate among gifted children, researchers conducted development research using the Hannafin and Peck Research and Development model, as well as data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation studies at the Bloom Child Development Center in Bekasi City. The results of this study show that the instruments developed are easy for teachers at the Bloom Child Development Center in Bekasi City to understand and use in identifying learning difficulties in gifted children at the perceptual-motor stage of development (2-5 years). These instruments consist of: instruments for identifying gifted children and identifying learning development at the perceptual-motor and cognitive stages through the elaboration of theories of giftedness and child development.

Abstract

This qualitative investigation examines how Indonesian primary schools incorporate digital civic competence as a means of advancing Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis methodology, the research analyzes national educational frameworks, scholarly discourse, and institutional practices within the contexts of Kurikulum Merdeka, Profil Pelajar Pancasila, and Adiwiyata (Green School) initiatives. Results indicate growing integration of digital civic education through project-based learning, digital narrative approaches, and responsible online participation that cultivate learners' analytical capabilities and civic consciousness. Nevertheless, substantial obstacles remain, including insufficient educator capacity, disparate technological access across regions, and limited development of context-specific ethical guidelines. The research offers a novel theoretical framework by synthesizing Pancasila values with digital civic education and sustainability principles, positioning moral, civic, and technological literacy as interconnected elements within transformative pedagogical practice. This integrated perspective highlights the necessity for systematic policy execution, continuous professional learning for educators, and culturally responsive instructional approaches to foster inclusive, ethically grounded, and sustainable digital educational ecosystems consistent with SDG targets.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities often have difficulty understanding abstract concepts, including basic arithmetic operations in mathematics.  A Learning media was designed to bridge the gap in abstract understanding through a visual and interactive approach. The method used is research and development (RD) with the Hannafin Peck model through three stages: needs assessment, design, and development and implementation. The results of the implementation of learning media in the form of GeHi calculation boards as visual-interactive tools in basic mathematics learning for fourth-grade children with intellectual disabilities showed an increase in the ability to add and subtract with results below 100. This is shown by the improvement in the abilities of the four students, such as: increased motivation to learn mathematics, ability to order numbers from smallest to largest and vice versa, ability to distinguish and name numbers (units, tens, and hundreds) based on color coding, and ability to explain the steps of addition and subtraction using the downward pattern using the GeHi counting board.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the specific needs of children with mild cerebral palsy (CP) and to explore the potential use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology as an educational and rehabilitative intervention medium within the context of special education. Employing an exploratory qualitative approach, the research was conducted at SLBN YPAC Jakarta through participatory observation, interviews with teachers, therapists, and parents, as well as document analysis. The findings indicate that children with mild CP require intensive support in both fine and gross motor coordination, yet they demonstrate adequate cognitive capacity and a positive response to visual and interactive learning. Teachers and parents showed strong acceptance toward the use of VR, although technical readiness, teacher training, and limited device availability remain key challenges. VR media has significant potential to enhance children’s motor and cognitive skills through activity simulations, real-time feedback, and multisensory stimulation that supports neuroplasticity processes. These findings highlight the importance of contextual needs assessment as the foundation for developing VR-based intervention models and media that are adaptive, applicable, and inclusive, enabling their practical implementation in special education settings in Indonesia.
