Abstract

Porang tuber (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is an Indonesian native commodity rich in glucomannan polysaccharides and potentially serves as a natural antioxidant source to counteract free radicals that trigger degenerative diseases. Objective of the researchv to map the antioxidant activity profile of non-polar, semi-polar, and polar extract s of porang tuber and determine the IC50 value using the DPPH method. Porang tuber powder was extracted through multilevel maceration using n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvents. Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method with UV-Vis Spectrophotometry at 517 nm, utilizing Vitamin C and Quercetin as positive controls. Result: The results showed that all extract possessed extremely strong antioxidant activity. The lowest IC50 value was obtained from the ethyl acetate extract at 3.44 ppm, followed by the ethanol extract at 3.61 ppm and the n-hexane extract at 3.81 ppm. The activity of the ethyl acetate extract was stronger than the positive controls, Vitamin C (3.75 ppm) and Quercetin (4.52 ppm). Multilevel extraction is effective in separating the active compounds of porang tuber, with the semi-polar extract (ethyl acetate) exhibiting the most optimal and extremely strong antioxidant potential.

Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and environmental pollution can generate free radicals that contribute to skin damage and accelerate premature aging. One approach to protect the skin from these effects is the use of antioxidants derived from natural sources. Arumanis mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins which have potential antioxidant activity and can be utilized as active ingredients in cosmetic formulations. This study aimed to formulate a gel mask containing ethanol extract of arumanis mango leaves and to evaluate the physical quality of the preparation. The extract was obtained using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent. The gel mask was formulated into three different extract concentrations, namely 0%, 4%, and 6%. The physical evaluation included organoleptic test, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and drying time tests. The results showed that the gel mask preparations exhibited good physical characteristics, with homogeneous appearance, pH values ranging from 5.16–6.26, spreadability of 5.5–6.8 cm, and drying time of 17–20 minutes. The variation in extract concentration affected the color of the preparation but did not significantly influence the overall physical stability of the gel. Therefore, ethanol extract of arumanis mango leaves can be formulated into a gel mask preparation that meets the physical quality requirements for skincare products.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that affects the body’s ability to control blood glucose levels, making effective treatments necessary to reduce postprandial glucose increases. Flavonoid compounds from raru bark (Cotylelobium melanoxylon) have shown potential as inhibitors of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, especially α-amylase and α-glucosidase. This study aimed to evaluate the antidiabetic potential of flavonoid compounds from raru bark using an in silico approach with molecular docking. Five flavonoid compounds—rutin, isoquercetin, quercetin, quercitrin, and isoquercitrin—were tested to examine their binding ability to the target enzymes. The results showed that rutin and isoquercetin had lower binding energy values than the standard ligand, indicating more stable interactions and stronger enzyme inhibition. These findings suggest that flavonoid compounds from raru bark may be developed as natural antidiabetic agents; however, further in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that impairs wound healing due to oxidative stress and prolonged inflammation. Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) contains bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic effects in promoting tissue repair. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of topical bay leaf extract gel on macroscopic wound healing in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. This experimental in vivo study used 30 male rats divided into six groups: normal control, negative control, positive control (Bioplacenton), and treatment groups receiving extract gel at concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Diabetes was induced using alloxan, followed by burn wound creation and topical treatment for 14 days. The results showed that treatment groups exhibited faster wound healing compared to the negative control. The 2.5% and 10% extract gel groups demonstrated more optimal wound closure, comparable to the positive control by day 14. These findings indicate that flavonoid and phenolic compounds in bay leaf contribute to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, supporting tissue regeneration. In conclusion, bay leaf extract gel is effective in accelerating wound healing in diabetic conditions. Further studies are recommended to investigate histopathological changes and molecular mechanisms.
