Abstract

This paper discusses the influence of the tarekat movement in the rebellion against Japan in 1944 from the pesantren in Sukamanah, Tasikmalaya, West Java. After the treaty of Kalijati, 1942, Japan took full control of the land of West Java. Sociologically it was considered to drain and enslave the people of Sukamanah, and theologically coupled with the Seikerei ritual imposed by the Japanese and considered by the leader of Sukamanah, Zaenal Mustafa, as a form of violation of Islamic principles became the motivation for the rebellion. This paper uses the historical method with a social approach. This writing uses the point of view of Sartono Kartodirdjo's social-religious approach in seeing the symptoms of resistance to Colonialism based on religious elites and the impact of a significant social change due to the oppression of colonialism which here is Japanese Imperialism, Tarekat being the only base of resistance. The final finding is that Zaenal Mustafa's role as a figure who further developed Tarekat Syattariyah, although political resistance in Java was very dominant was closely related to the development of the Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqsabandiyah community into a new force of resistance in West Java.

Abstract

This study examines the Indo political movements in the Dutch East Indies during the early 20th century, focusing on the Indische Partij and Insulinde organizations and their quest for Indis nationalism. Using a historical method and sociological approach, particularly Neil J. Smelser's theory of collective behavior, this study analyzes the Indo community's role in the Indonesian national movement. The implementation of the Dutch Ethical Policy, which produced nationalist intellectuals among indigenous people, and the strengthening of racial segregation in the Dutch East Indies, led to concerns among the Indo community. E. F. E. Douwes Dekker, concerned about Indo people as Indiers, developed the concept of Indiers and Indis nationalism through the organization known as the Indische Partij. The formation of Indische Partij then sparking collective behavior to oppose the Dutch East Indies government in the form of political activism. Together with Soewardi Soerjaningrat and Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo, they were known as Tiga Serangkai and helped mobilizing the Indische Partij masses to fight for freedom from Dutch control and helped mobilizing the Indische Partij masses to fight for freedom from Dutch control. The Indische Partij disbanded after the Dutch East Indies government deemed it subversive and exiled the Tiga Serangkai. The Insulinde organization emerged as the Indische Partij's successor, with Douwes Dekker and Tjipto participating. However, the Dutch East Indies government's rejection of Insulinde's legal application led to its dissolution and signaled a turning point in the trajectory of Indis nationalism.

Abstract

This article examines the transformation of Pasar Bambu Kuning, a traditional market in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, from its establishment during the colonial Dutch East Indies period to its transformation into an urban economic center in 2010. Using historical methods such as heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, this article draws on primary sources such as local and national newspapers, colonial-era visual sources, and secondary sources including scholarly articles, research reports, books, and unpublished theses. The findings of this study reveal that Pasar Bambu Kuning evolved from a colonial periodic market into a vital permanent trading center after Indonesia’s independence, driven by population growth and commercial needs. This transformation included major renovations between 1974 and 1990, resulting in a three-story building structure, although the process was marked by conflicts and disputes among the stakeholders. This study contributes significantly to the understanding of the historical transformation of traditional markets in Indonesia and their role in shaping urban economies and societies. It serves as a valuable historical reference for future studies on urban development and the revitalization of traditional markets.

Abstract

This article focuses on examining how Loenpia Gang Lombok has been able to survive racial stigmatisation against the Chinese community, particularly at Semarang in relation to their cuisine, namely lumpia, by taking a case study of the Loenpia Gang Lombok stall. The objective of this research is to explore the social resilience of the Loenpia Gang Lombok stall in countering racial stigmatisation, particularly the stigmatisation that has become an issue or source of concern for Loenpia Gang Lombok and the Chinese community in Semarang. This study uses observational and historical methods, including heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, to analyse the development of Loenpia Gang Lombok and its social resilience. The results of this study reveal that the stigmatisation stems from societal assumptions or perceptions that the ingredients used in making Loenpia Gang Lombok contain non-halal components. However, in fact, Loenpia Gang Lombok does not use such non-halal ingredients as stigmatised by the community. The social resilience of Loenpia Gang Lombok can be analysed through various aspects, including historical perspectives, development, the stigmatisation that has occurred, and efforts to survive in the face of such stigmatisation.

Abstract

This article examines the position of Muhammadiyah within the dynamics of the relationship between two ideologies, Islam and communism, during the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies, particularly in the 1920s. This period was marked by the emergence of two major ideological forces as a result of the ethical policy: Islam, represented by organizations such as Sarekat Islam (SI) and Muhammadiyah, and communism through the Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI, Indonesian Communist Party). The aim of this article is to identify and understand the role of Muhammadiyah as an Islamic movement organization in the context of the conflict between Islam and communism during the colonial Dutch East Indies period. This article uses historical methods, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this research show that Muhammadiyah was not only involved in this ideological conflict, but also played a significant role in responding to the challenges of communist ideology. Ultimately, this conflict helped shape Muhammadiyah’s character as a more progressive, moderate, democratic Islamic organization that was focused on making real contributions to the struggle for Indonesian independence.

Abstract

Abstract

The Timor Leste integration into Indonesia and the Santa Cruz Incident were important events in the history of both nations. The integration refers to the incorporation of Timor Leste as the 27th province of Indonesia in 1976, while The Santa Cruz Incident in 1991 influenced global public opinion on the Timor Leste issue. This study aims to examine how the integration process and the Santa Cruz Incident are portrayed in Indonesian texts and historiography. The research employs qualitative methods, namely a comparative historiographical study and critical discourse analysis using the Fairclough model. The Althusserian State Ideological Apparatus approach is used to examine how the ruling ideology plays a role in historical writing. This can be seen in the findings of this study that the historiography of Timor Leste in Sejarah Nasional Indonesia, both regarding integration and the Santa Cruz Incident, was written in an unbalanced manner and with an apologetic narrative. The active role of the Indonesian military and the loss of lives that resulted from it during the integration process were not revealed.  In writing about the Santa Cruz Incident, SNI used military sources to describe the violence perpetrated by the military itself. The book narrates that the loss of life was caused by being trampled due to mass panic. This study reveals a bias in Indonesian historiography, which tends to side with those in power while ignoring the perspective of the victims.
