Abstract

English Phonology is one of the subjects that is considered difficult to learn. Students assume that it is difficult since they have to memorize theories related to English pronunciation. To solve this problem, a team of lecturers agreed to apply a learning model called “DRIM” (dictating, reading, identifying, and modeling). The research was conducted within four cycles through Lesson Study program. The learning model consists of: 1) dictating, students listen to and write the sentences recited by the lecturer; 2) Reading, the students are given a text containing words with diphthongs. Those steps are done before the lecturer explains the material on diphthongs to diagnose students’ ability to recognize diphthongs; 3) Identifying, the students are asked to identify the given text and find words containing diphthongs After the students have understood the diphthongs and known how to pronounce them, the last step is 4) modeling. In modeling step, the students are asked to recite some words containing diphthongs and have other students repeat. By applying the model, the advantages that can be taken are as follows: a) giving more exercises and more various activities, b) improving listening skill, and c) growing students’ self- confidence to give examples to their other classmates.

Abstract

Writing skill is one of the most important language skills to be mastered by students. There have been many learning models developed for writing especially in English but not all English teachers know and implement these learning models. One learning model that has been extensively researched and proven to be effective in teaching English writing skills is the Genre Based Approach. The English teacher's mastery of the Genre Based Approach learning model is very important because apart from being proven effective, it is also recommended by the government, especially in the implementation of the independent curriculum. It is projected for learning in the coming year, GBA will be required to be used as a model for learning English in schools, including in vocational schools. The service method is carried out using the lesson study model. Lesson study is carried out in three cycles until finally the students get a score that exceeds the KKM score. In addition to quantitative data in the form of increasing students' English writing scores, the volunteers also distributed questionnaires that asked students' perceptions after learning using the Genre Based Approach. From the answers to the questionnaire it can be concluded that GBA cognitively adds to their insights and this insight can be used for ideas in writing and affectively GBA makes them interested and challenged to write.

Abstract

Writing is one of five skills in English subject, and it is also one of the communication tools in which students express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Unfortunately, writing is considered a difficult skill to master. That is why a tool is needed to be used in the teaching of writing. An electronic tool is one of the tools that can support the teacher in delivering the materials in a writing class. Among many electronic tools, PowToon is one of the tools that is suitable for teaching the skill. The web-based software presents the materials with animation features, such as cartoons and transition effects. This research is aimed at investigating the advantages and disadvantages of using PowToon in teaching descriptive text. The respondents were 10 students of a senior high school. The researcher used qualitative research with a narrative inquiry design. Documentation (reflective journal), questionnaires, and interviews were used as instruments for collecting the data. Based on the data collected, it can be seen that the advantages of PowToon as an electronic teaching tool made the learning process interesting, happy, fun, motivating, and understandable. However, the researcher found some disadvantages of this tool as the unclear sound produced by the tool. They could barely hear what the speaker was saying. In addition, the duration of the video was too short, so it made the speech fast and not catchable by the students. Keywords: Descriptive Text, Narrative Inquiry, PowToon, Writing Skill

Abstract

Listening is important to be learned by students in learning English language. However, students find it hard to comprehend and understand the language, because students are not accustom to the language. To help students to accustom to the language and improve listening skill needs proper medium in learning activity. Using podcast as medium in learning listening is expected to help the students accustom to the language. The research was conducted at SMK Putra Pakuan that involved 33 students of X TKJ as the sample from the total population 135 students of tenth grade. Pre-experimental method and one group pre-test post-test design were used. T-test formula is used to analyze the data. Based on data calculation, the result of t-test value is 4.26. Meanwhile, t-table value is 2.03 at significant level 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) is 32. It shows that the t-test value is higher than t-table value (4.262.03). It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that podcast has an effect on students listening comprehension.
