Abstract

This study aims to portray the resilience of Using culture through a phenomenological study of 'street singers' (pengamen) in Banyuwangi. The street singers of Banyuwangi also colore the richness of Using culture and appear to present Using ethnic songs in expressing their artistic activities. The influence of global culture is increasingly difficult to be blocked [1] [2], meanwhile geographically, the location of the cultural existence is precisely at the crossroads of two major cultures, namely Javanese and Balinese cultures [3]. Qualitative research through phenomenological studies was conducted through in-depth interviews with cultural actors (street singers) and the Using supporting community of Banyuwangi. The data is then analyzed through the sequence stages: (1) transcribing the recorded interview results to written form, (2) bracketing (epoche), (3) taking an inventory of important statements (horizonalization), (4) formulating into the meaning (cluster of meaning) and (5) performing the descriptions of the essence. The results of this study cover two important things. First, Using culture can survive because of the aclak (active), bingkak (creative) and ladak (innovative) spirits of Using cultural actors. Second, the acceptance of the Banyuwangi community in general for the artistic expression of Using songs due to the consequences of the defense (uri-uri) spirit of the community. This study concludes that the preservation of Using culture is based on the internal spirit (active, creative, innovative) of cultural actors and external spirit, namely the process of preservation (uri-uri).

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of volleyball extracurricular activities on prosocial behavior, resilience, and physical fitness among vocational high school students. A quantitative quasi-experimental design was applied with a sample of 100 students from SMK PGRI Kasembon, divided equally into an experimental group (volleyball extracurricular participants) and a control group (non-participants). Data were collected through questionnaires assessing prosocial behavior and resilience, as well as the bleep test for physical fitness (VO₂max). Statistical analysis indicated three key findings: first, no significant differences were observed in prosocial behavior between the two groups; second, resilience was significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group; and third, students involved in volleyball extracurricular activities demonstrated significantly better physical fitness levels. These results suggest that while volleyball extracurricular activities may not directly enhance prosocial behavior, they play an essential role in strengthening resilience and improving physical health. The findings highlight the importance of integrating sports-based extracurricular programs into school curricula to support students’ psychological development and physical well-being.

Abstract

In the study of phonology, learners examine the distinct characteristics of English sound systems that set it apart from other linguistic structures. This includes an exploration of phonetics, specifically focusing on the mechanics of phonetic articulation and the resulting sounds. This study utilized a quasi-experimental research design involving 62 Thai students as the primary subjects. These participants were organized into two distinct groups: the Experimental Group (EG) and the Control Group (CG). In the contemporary era, technological tools are increasingly leveraged to bolster the educational process. True learning is realized when students can actively engage, communicate, and interact in a manner that aligns with their personal goals and capabilities. With widespread internet access, students can now retrieve information rapidly. Furthermore, they frequently utilize advanced mobile features to share knowledge with their peers. Driven by these trends, this research investigates the efficacy of virtual media in instructing pronunciation to native Thai speakers studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at Lukmanul Hakeem private school in Thailand

Abstract

This study explores the shift in social interaction patterns among urban adolescents in Surabaya due to the massive penetration and domination of social media use. Employing a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design, primary data collection was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews and non-participant observation involving 15 adolescents aged 15 to 18 years. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The results reveal four main findings. First, the disruption of the communal essence in the local tradition of "cangkrukan", which is now reduced to a mere physical gathering without deep verbal interaction. Second, the high frequency of computer-mediated communication is proven to only create a superficial illusion of connectivity. Third, the habituation of phubbingbehavior significantly erodes non-verbal communication elements, directly impacting the decline of interpersonal empathy. Fourth, social anxiety in the form of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) triggers a strong fixation on gadgets, giving rise to the paradoxical condition of being "alone together" in public spaces. This study concludes that the dominance of cyberspace has triggered a crisis of social presence, where adolescents fail to fully allocate their attention and emotions in the real world. Therefore, digital literacy interventions must not merely focus on limiting screen time, but rather be directed towards digital mindfulness practices to restore the emotional and interpersonal communication skills of the younger generation.

Abstract

This research explores the paradoxical role of internet memes in shaping political discourse among Generation Z in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach through virtual ethnography and in-depth interviews with 20 first-time voter informants, this study dissects how these digital cultural artifacts influence patterns of political participation. The results indicate that memes serve as a primary "entry point" for adolescents to understand complex policy issues through intuitive visual language. Memes are proven to democratize political discourse by breaking down elite communication barriers and acting as effective counter-narrative instruments for citizens. However, the study also identifies significant risks in the form of issue substance reduction and the slacktivism phenomenon, where the digital satisfaction of sharing satirical content replaces tangible action in the physical world. Furthermore, memes are often used merely as a coping mechanism against corrupt political realities, which potentially fosters permanent cynicism and apathy. This study concludes that while memes expand public engagement, they also trigger a shallowing of discourse that necessitates critical digital political literacy interventions. The focus of literacy must be directed towards bridging creative expression in cyberspace into substantial and accountable civic engagement in the real world.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of cancel culture and its impact on freedom of speech and the psychological resilience of university students in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach with an existential phenomenological design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 students who had been involved in the digital cancellation ecosystem as perpetrators, victims, or passive bystanders. The results reveal that cancel culture has mutated from an accountability instrument into a repressive form of digital vigilantism. Key findings indicate a massive chilling effect, where students obsessively practice self-censorship of their opinions due to the fear of destructive social exclusion. Furthermore, the study identifies severe psychological impacts on "cancelled" subjects, including panic attacks, depression, and social isolation that threatens academic motivation. The boundary between ethical enforcement and cyberbullying is found to be increasingly blurred due to the amplification of collective rage by social media algorithms. This study concludes that the dominance of this horizontal judgment culture has created a crisis of intellectual courage within the campus environment. Therefore, a paradigm shift toward restorative justice and the strengthening of digital emotional literacy is required to restore a safe dialectical space where differing opinions are no longer perceived as social threats that must be permanently eradicated.

Abstract

This research analyzes cultural identity negotiation strategies among university students in Indonesia amidst the dominance of global popular culture, specifically the influence of Hallyu and Westernization. Employing a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews and digital observations of 12 students in urban environments. The results indicate that students do not passively adopt foreign cultures; instead, they undergo a "glocalization" process through selective hybridity. The findings identify three main typologies: adaptive hybridity, symbolic resistance through digital indigeneity, and aesthetic assimilation. While global elements are utilized as social capital for a modern self-image, local religious and moral values remain fundamental filters in the adoption process. However, the study also reveals significant risks of cultural alienation in the form of authenticity crises and cultural inferiority due to dominant transnational aesthetic standards on social media. This study concludes that contemporary student identity manifests as a dynamic "cultural mosaic." It suggests a repositioning of character education to foster critical cultural negotiation skills, enabling the younger generation to become global actors without losing their national identity roots.
