Abstract

Background: Family communication can become a support system for adolescents. Ineffective communication in the family causes emotional problems and poor psychological well-being in adolescents. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the determinant factor of effective family communication in adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional multi-centre design with 357 participants aged 15-16 from fve high schools in Indonesia. We used the convenience sampling method to select participants. Communication in the family questionnaire, Rosenberg Self Esteem Instrument, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) questionnaires were used to measure communication within the family, selfesteem, stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide ideation, respectively. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and binary logistics regression. Results: Most of the adolescents were male (52.1%), had harmonious families (96.6%), had economic status above the minimum wage (65.5%), had high self-esteem (88.5%), and had high social support (67.8%). However, in terms of mental health problems, as many as 47.3%, 74.2%, 72%, and 30.5% of adolescents experienced stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, respectively. The multivariate analysis concluded that gender (AOR: 0.499; 95% CI: 0.294-0.847) and socioeconomic status (AOR: 0.2.162; 95% CI: 1.296-3.608) were signifcantly correlated with family communication. Conclusion: Males adolescents are more likely to have ineffective family communication than female adolescents. Also, adolescents with a family socioeconomic status below the minimum wage have a greater risk of ineffective family communication. Therefore, it is essential to improve family communication through assertive communication training in adolescents and families in the educational and community setting.

Abstract

Introduction: Changes in the self-esteem of the elderly often occur with the emergence of feelings of worthlessness, worthlessness, lack of confidence, and withdrawal from their environment. The impact of changes in self-esteem will trigger depression as well as reduce the quality of life of the elderly. Life review therapy that is carried out in groups for the elderly can increase positive perceptions through stories and life experiences of all members of the elderly group. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the effect of life review group therapy in increasing the self-esteem of the elderly. Method: The pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design without a control group was used in this study. Through the purposive sampling technique, the number of samples obtained is 25 elderlies. Elderly self-esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) instrument. Results and discussion: The results of the study which were tested with Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs showed that there was an effect of self-esteem before and after being given life review group therapy worth p = 0.000 < 0.05. Life review group therapy helps the elderly to remember experiences in the past, about parents and siblings in childhood, adolescence, and positive experiences they have had. In addition to remembering their past experiences, the elderly is invited to analyze and evaluate these experiences and help them change their negative perceptions into positive ones. Conclusion: It can be concluded that life review group therapy has a positive effect on the self-esteem of the elderly. Therefore, life review group therapy can be used as an alternative to increasing the self-esteem of the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Eating problems are common among children, with approximately 25%-40% of toddlers being picky eaters. During the toddler developmental stage, children experience significant growth processes, and the role of the mother is crucial in ensuring that children are not exposed to nutritional deficiencies. Children's eating patterns begin to form before the age of 3 Many parents and children find this eating skill difficult. Objectives: This study aims to identify the factors associated with the prevalence of picky eating behaviours in toddlers. Methods: This study employs a systematic review approach, conducting a literature search across three databases: Google Scholar, ProQuest, and PubMed. The selection of articles is guided by the PRISMA Flowchart, followed by critical appraisal utilizing the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) instrument. The findings indicate that 15 articles relevant to the literature review were identified based on the established inclusion criteria. Results: Upon analyzing the literature, this study concludes that the factors influencing picky eating behaviours are attributed to external factors, specifically parental behaviours, and internal factors related to the child's behaviour. Picky eating, defined as selective eating behaviour, is a prevalent issue often observed in toddlers. This phenomenon can lead to growth disorders and may adversely impact children's nutritional status and overall health in the long termConclusions: Several factors influence the phenomenon of picky eating in children, the most prevalent being insufficient maternal knowledge and the demands placed on working mothers. This phenomenon can lead to growth disorders and may adversely impact children's nutritional status and overall health in the long term.
