Abstract

Selfitis is one of the phenomena that is currently popular among adolescents. Adolescents are attracted to show self-presentation, one of which is through selfies. This study aimed to identify the correlation between the obsessive desire to take selfies and high school adolescents' self-esteem. This research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The study population was high school adolescents aged 15-16 years with 797 participants recruited using a total sampling method. The instrument in this study used the Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire to measure self-esteem and the Selfitis Behavior Scale (SBS) questionnaire to measure selfitis in adolescents. The results showed that most of the adolescents had borderline selfitis (46.3%) and high self-esteem (88.1%). Factors that were significantly related to taking selfies amongst adolescents were gender (p-value: 0.000) and socioeconomic status (p-value: 0.000). Meanwhile, gender (p-value: 0.013), socio-economic status (p-value: 0.032), family harmony (p-value: 0.000), and selfitis (p-value: 0.000) were significantly related to self-esteem in adolescents. The multivariate analysis results showed that harmony in the family was the most influential factor in adolescents' self-esteem. Adolescents with higher levels of selfitis and harmony in the family tended to have better self-esteem.

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescents are a group vulnerable to mental health problems, including stress, anxiety, and depression. This study aimed to examine the interlink of a harmonious family with stress, anxiety, and depression in adolescents. Methods: This study employed descriptive correlational design with cross-sectional approach and examined 851 high school adolescents aged between 16-18 years who were recruited using a total sampling method from five high school in Malang City. Stress, anxiety and depression in adolescents was assessed employing the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS - 21), while, to assess family harmony, a questionnaire   developed by the researcher was used. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and bivariate tests using Spearman Rank Correlation. Results: It was revealed that 428 adolescents (50.3%) were male, 321 adolescents (37.7%) came from parents who worked privately, and 482 adolescents (56.6%) had their parents' social status above the minimum wage standard. Eight hundred and two adolescents (94.2%) had harmonious families, while the remaining 49 adolescents (5.8%) had non-harmonious families. Our study concluded that family harmony had a significant relationship with adolescent stress levels (p-value 0.013). On the other hand, the analysis showed that family harmony was not related to adolescents' anxiety (p-value 0.071) and depression level (p-value 0.13). A harmonious family makes children mentally healthy, able to adapt to the environment while a family that is not harmonious can trigger stress because conditions are not as expected, coupled with the burden of schoolwork, stressors from teachers and peers. Conclusion:The results of the research showed that harmony in the family had a significant effect on stress in adolescents. Therefore, it is necessary to provide education and counseling to the family to prevent fights in the family so that it can reduce the emergence of stress in adolescents.

Data were analyzed using Chi-square and binary logistics regression. Results: Most of the adolescents were male (52.1%), had harmonious families (96.6%), had economic status above the minimum wage (65.5%), had high self-esteem (88.5%), and had high social support (67.8%). However, in terms of mental health problems, as many as 47.3%, 74.2%, 72%, and 30.5% of adolescents experienced stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, respectively. The multivariate analysis concluded that gender (AOR: 0.499; 95% CI: 0.294-0.847) and socioeconomic status (AOR: 0.2.162; 95% CI: 1.296-3.608) were signifcantly correlated with family communication. Conclusion: Males adolescents are more likely to have ineffective family communication than female adolescents. Also, adolescents with a family socioeconomic status below the minimum wage have a greater risk of ineffective family communication. Therefore, it is essential to improve family communication through assertive communication training in adolescents and families in the educational and community setting.

Abstract

The Elderly is a risk group prone to physical and psychological changes. Physical and psychological changes in the elderly cause disturbances in daily activities. The physical and mental health of the elderly are two things that have a reciprocal relationship that requires pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. This study aims to examine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on physical health (pain) and mental health (stress, anxiety, and depression) in the elderly. This research is Quasi-Experimental research using a one-group pre-post test design approach. The population in this study were all elderly living in the homestead at the Tresna Wredha Social Institution in the Jember Region. The Numerical Rating Scale for pain and DASS-21 measures pain, stress, anxiety, and depression in the elderly before and after implementing progressive muscle relaxation therapy. The results of this study showed that there were significant differences between before and after administration of progressive muscle relaxation therapy for pain (p-value = 0.000), stress (p-value = 0.000), anxiety (p-value = 0.000), and depression (p-value =0.000) in the elderly. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for implementing progressive muscle relaxation therapy to reduce pain, stress, anxiety, and depression in the elderly so that it is expected that the physical and psychological health of the elderly can improve.

Abstract

Background: Older adults often experience sleep disturbances due to the physiological decline of aging. Sleep disturbances predict physical and mental health problems in older adults, especially a risk of depressive symptoms. SEFT (Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique) is a therapy that combines spiritual power energy through prayer and psychology to improve the condition of mind, emotions, and behavior. Since little is known about the SEFT used to enhance sleep quality and reduce depressive symptoms in older adults. This study aimed to explore the effect of the Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique (SEFT) on sleep quality and depression in older adults. Methods: This study used the quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. Forty-six older adults in nursing homes participated in this study, divided into the experimental and control groups. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney (U), and Wilcoxon tests. Results: This study showed significant differences in sleep quality (p-value: 0.03) and depression (p-value: 0.05) in older adults before and after the implementation of SEFT. The results of the Mann Whitney Test – (U) test indicated a significant difference in the sleep quality of the participants in the intervention group compared to the control group (p-value: 0.011). However, conversely, there was no significant difference in depression symptoms of the older adults in the control and intervention groups after implementing SEFT (p-value: 0.075). Conclusions: Our findings infer that the SEFT can be considered a useful nonpharmacologic approach to improve sleep quality and depression among older adults in nursing homes. However, further research is needed concerning the impact of SEFT on older adults' depression.

Methods: This type of research is quantitative with a non-hypothetical descriptive survey research design. The population in this study were 20 people with hypertension who were members of Karang Werdha in sukorambi villages Jember using the accidental sampling technique. This research tool uses digital blood pressure measurements and CERDIK behavioral questions that have been tested for validity (0.635-0.784) and reliability (0.817).
