Abstract

Emergency Departments are critical healthcare units where efficient triage plays an important role in ensuring optimal patient care. The Emergency Severity Index (ESI) is a widely used triage system designed to improve prioritization and resource allocation. Proper use of ESI-based triage will improve the quality of care. Objective: This literature review aims to analyze the impact of ESI-based triage optimization on Emergency Department service quality. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, and SciSpace databases, using the keywords: Emergency Severity Index (ESI), Emergency Department, Triage, using the PCC (Population, Concept, Context) approach. The article selection process used PRISMA which was then subjected to critical appraisal. The initial search was conducted through Google Scholar (5,521 articles), PubMed (2,019 articles), ResearchGate (881 articles), and SciSpace (99 articles). The process of removing duplicate articles left 8,151 articles, the initial screening of 8,125 articles was eliminated, so only 26 articles entered the further screening stage. From this process, 16 articles did not meet the criteria and were excluded. Finally, 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected and reviewed. Results: The findings showed that ESI optimization improved patient flow, reduced waiting time, and improved resource utilization, leading to better clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: implementation of an optimized ESI-based triage system contributes significantly to the efficiency and quality of Emergency Department care, emphasizing the need for consistent training and protocol adherence.

Abstract

Abstract

Nurse performance is a key determinant of patient safety and quality of care, yet remains highly influenced by multidimensional internal and external factors. This literature review aims to examine and synthesize the theoretical and empirical evidence regarding the determinants of nurse performance in the implementation of nursing care. This review draws upon theoretical perspectives of organizational behavior, motivational theory, and competency-based performance, supported by empirical findings from research published between 2020–2025. Using the PRISMA 2020 method, 1,310 articles were initially identified, from which 11 studies met the inclusion criteria. The literature was systematically reviewed through a structured process involving database searching (PubMed, DOAJ, Google Scholar, Garuda, Sinta, and Scopus), screening based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, independent data extraction by two reviewers using a standardized form, and methodological quality assessment applying the JBI Critical Appraisal tools. Given the heterogeneity of study designs, a narrative synthesis approach was used to categorize determinants of nurse performance. Evidence synthesis demonstrates that nurse performance is shaped by individual factors (competence, tenure), psychological factors (stress, anxiety, burnout), motivational variables (self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation), and organizational determinants (leadership, managerial support, work culture), alongside environmental conditions (workload, shift patterns, equipment availability). Competence, work motivation, effective leadership, and supportive work environments consistently enhanced nurse performance, whereas workload burden and pandemic-related stress were associated with performance decline. Methodologically, most studies relied on cross-sectional designs and subjective self-report instruments, limiting causal interpretation and standardization. Nurse performance is driven by an interplay of personal, psychological, organizational, and systemic factors, necessitating a holistic improvement strategy incorporating competency development, motivational support, leadership strengthening, and work environment optimization.

Abstract

The quality of nursing services is a critical determinant of patient safety, care effectiveness, and overall patient satisfaction. Nursing rounds and pre–post conferences are widely implemented strategies to enhance team coordination, clarify care plans, and improve the quality of nursing care delivery. This study aimed to systematically review the impact of nursing rounds and pre–post conferences on nursing care quality outcomes. A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2020 and 2025 using relevant MeSH terms and keywords related to nursing rounds, pre–post conferences, and nursing care quality. The review process involved identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion of studies. Original studies and systematic reviews conducted in nursing settings that reported quality-related outcomes were included. Case reports, editorials, conference abstracts without full text, and studies without a clear description of the intervention were excluded. Of the 312 records identified, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that nursing rounds and pre–post conferences were associated with improvements in patient satisfaction, quality of nursing documentation, patient safety outcomes, and work efficiency, although the magnitude of effects varied across settings and study designs. Nursing rounds and pre–post conferences have a positive impact on multiple dimensions of nursing care quality and represent effective strategies for enhancing nursing service delivery.

Abstract

Compliance with complete basic immunization among children under five remains a public health concern, with maternal knowledge and behavior identified as important influencing factors. This literature review aimed to synthesize quantitative evidence on the association between maternal knowledge and behavior and compliance with complete basic immunization among under-five children. A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for open-access articles published between 2020 and 2025. A total of 1,012 articles were identified; after removing 300 duplicates, 712 articles were screened by title and abstract. Of these, 521 articles were excluded, and 191 were assessed for full-text eligibility, with 171 articles unavailable in full text. Twenty articles underwent full assessment, and 16 cross-sectional studies met the inclusion criteria based on study design, participant characteristics, and data completeness. Methodological quality was evaluated using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist, and data were synthesized using a quantitative narrative approach. The majority of studies reported a significant association between maternal knowledge and behavior and compliance with complete basic immunization, although adjustment for confounding variables was limited. Maternal knowledge and behavior are closely associated with immunization compliance. Further longitudinal and intervention-based studies are recommended to strengthen causal evidence.

Abstract

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) program is an educational initiative designed to equip nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to continuously improve quality and patient safety within healthcare systems. Junior nurses, as frontline providers of nursing care, require adequate competencies in patient safety aspects. This study aims to identify and synthesize scientific findings regarding the effectiveness of the QSEN program in improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of junior nurses. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review following the PRISMA guidelines. Articles published between 2021 and 2026 were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The initial search identified 3,500 records. After removing 1,150 duplicates, 1,900 records were screened. A total of 1,600 records were excluded based on title and abstract. Of the remaining 300 articles, 120 could not be retrieved. Subsequently, 180 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility, and 158 were excluded due to not meeting inclusion criteria. Finally, 22 studies were included in the synthesis. The findings indicate that the implementation of the QSEN program has a positive impact on improving junior nurses’ knowledge of patient safety (60–85%), enhancing clinical skills (55–80%), and improving professional attitudes in nursing practice (70–90%). Several factors such as organizational support, effective leadership, clinical supervision, and continuous training play a crucial role in the successful implementation of the QSEN program. The QSEN program is effective in improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of junior nurses. The success of its implementation is strongly influenced by organizational support, leadership, and an adequate supervision system.
