Abstract

Background: Cancer is a non-communicable illness brought on by the unnatural and unchecked proliferation of bodily tissue cells. A malignant tumor of the breast or one of the breasts is breast cancer in and of itself. Aim: The purpose of this activity is to educate through BSE (Breast Self-Examination, SADARI) socialization as the first step in preventing breast cancer and increasing the participation of the community, especially women of reproductive age, in carrying out early detection of breast cancer prevention. Method: To delve further into this subject, the researchers adopted a qualitative technique. The researchers sought to learn more about residents' awareness about breast cancer and its prevention, particularly SADARI, by initial observation and interviews. The researchers analyzed and organized the data they had gathered in order to come up with a reliable conclusion. Findings: In terms of knowledge, before being given health education by Posyandu (Integrated Healthcare Center, Pos Pelayanan Terpadu) cadres most of the knowledge of women of reproductive age about SADARI was in the sufficient category as many as 18 respondents (45.%) and after being given health education there was an increase where most of the women of reproductive age’s knowledge (80%) became good. Meanwhile, for the attitude before being given health education by Posyandu cadres, some of women of reproductive age had a negative attitude towards SADARI (12.5%), and after being given There was an increase in health education by cadres, namely the majority of respondents 39 respondents (97%) had a positive attitude towards SADARI.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with a high prevalence, often referred to as a “silent killer” because most cases go undetected. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension reaches 34.1% and increases significantly among the elderly population. Low awareness of routine check-ups, particularly in rural areas, heightens the risk of severe complications. This community service program aimed to raise awareness of healthy lifestyles through hypertension screening and education for the elderly in a village in West Java. The program was carried out using a participatory approach involving older adults, community health volunteers (posyandu cadres), healthcare workers, and village officials. A total of 52 elderly participants underwent blood pressure screening, which revealed that 40.4% were normal, 34.6% were pre-hypertensive, and 25.0% had hypertension. These findings highlight that nearly 60% of participants were either at risk or already suffering from hypertension.Interactive health education using simple media proved effective, as demonstrated by an increase in knowledge levels from 28.8% before the program to 75.0% after. The level of participation was also high, with 88.5% of elderly participants actively engaging in discussions. The involvement of posyandu cadres further strengthened the program by supporting routine monitoring and reinforcing healthy lifestyle reminders. This initiative successfully enhanced early detection, knowledge, and awareness among the elderly in preventing and managing hypertension.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) among young adults is closely associated with lifestyle changes and sleep disturbances. Poor sleep patterns contribute to impaired glucose regulation and an elevated risk of diabetes. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of sleep hygiene management interventions in reducing the risk of T2DM among young adults. A quasi-experimental study employing a nonequivalent control group design was conducted involving 60 participants, divided into an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The experimental group received an eight-week sleep hygiene intervention, while the control group maintained their usual routines. The variables measured included fasting blood glucose levels and sleep quality assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data were analyzed using the independent samples t-test. The results demonstrated that the experimental group experienced a significant reduction in fasting blood glucose levels by 15.42 mg/dL and an improvement in sleep quality by 6.28 points, with statistical significance at p < 0.001. In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes.  In conclusion, sleep hygiene management interventions are effective non-pharmacological strategies for reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among young adults.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is predominantly attributed to blood loss, particularly in adolescent girls during menstruation, and insufficient consumption of iron-rich foods. Iron-rich food sources include almonds, leafy greens, and red meat. Pharmacological interventions to address low hemoglobin levels in teenagers included the weekly intake of iron tablets, whilst non-pharmacological strategies involved the daily ingestion of mung bean juice. This study sought to assess the impact of iron tablet and mung bean juice administration on hemoglobin level enhancement in adolescent girls at a Junior High School in Samarinda. Methods: The research employed a quasi-experimental approach featuring a nonequivalent control group. The sampling strategy employed a non-probability method via purposive sampling. The researcher established the sampling according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria utilizing the Federer formula, resulting in 18 individuals in both the control and intervention groups. The treatment group received mung bean juice for a duration of 14 days. A paired T-test was used to analyze the difference in hemoglobin levels before and after therapy.  Results: The analysis produced a p-value < 0.001, which is less than 0.05, leading to the conclusion that the intervention group exhibited a greater increase in hemoglobin levels compared to the control group. Conclusion: The administration of Fe tablets and mung bean juice effectively increased hemoglobin levels in teenage girls at the Junior High School in Samarinda. Regular administration of iron tablets and mung bean juice is recommended as a measure to increase hemoglobin levels in adolescent girls.

Abstract

Central obesity is a primary risk factor for various non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension, with its prevalence steadily increasing due to sedentary lifestyles and imbalanced diets. The community in Pampang Village, Samarinda, faces challenges of nutritional transition characterized by high consumption of processed foods and low physical activity. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to enhance nutritional literacy and community awareness of the prevention of central obesity by implementing the Isi Piringku (My Plate) balanced diet guidelines. The implementation method involved three stages: awareness through anthropometric health screening (BMI and waist circumference), capacity building through interactive counseling and local food demonstrations, and empowerment through active lifestyle mentoring. The activity involved 45 participants, predominantly from the productive age group and the elderly. Screening results revealed that 60% of participants (27 individuals) suffered from central obesity. The educational intervention significantly improved participants' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 55 (pre-test) to 88 (post-test). The study concludes that community-based health interventions utilizing personal screening and visual education are effective in enhancing community understanding of early detection and dietary changes to reduce the risk of central obesity at the village level.

Abstract

Background: Currently the incidence of short toddlers or called stunting is one of the nutritional problems experienced by toddlers in the world. One of the causes of the stunting problem is the delay in Early Breastfeeding Initiation (IMD) and non-exclusive breastfeeding. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding for at least 6 months. Breast milk is a nutritional intake that fits the needs that help the growth and development of children. Children who do not get enough breast milk mean they have poor nutritional intake which can cause malnutrition, one of which can cause the risk of stunting. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24-60 months in the Sungai Kapih Health Center work area. Methods: The method of this study is observational analytic with a retrospective approach. The number of samples in this study was 72 toddlers. The instrument used to obtain secondary data in this study was the MCH handbook, and the instrument used to obtain primary data in this study was research observation sheets. The data were analyzed using the Fisher Exact test. Results: The results of the study showed that out of 72 toddlers, 36 toddlers experienced stunting, 37 toddlers were not given exclusive breastfeeding and 35 toddlers were given exclusive breastfeeding. Bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 24-60 months in the Sungai Kapih Health Center work area.
