Abstract

The ubiquitous presence of mobile devices has benefited the implementation of foreign language learning through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Previous research highlights the portability aspect of mobile devices such as smartphones that can lead to spontaneous, flexible, and personalized learning activities. However, challenges remain; particularly the connectivity issues. The present study seeks to continue the discussion by investigating 79 Indonesian undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of MALL in their Korean language classes. The data were obtained by distributing a questionnaire to the students. The validity and reliability coefficients were also measured. Interview sessions were conducted afterward with eleven students to dig for further explanations. The results demonstrate that most students used smartphones for sending messages to peers, checking notifications, accessing materials, submitting their work, and sending messages to lecturers. Regarding the applications used, they frequently utilized smartphones for accessing Google Classroom, Zoom, and WhatsApp during their Korean classes. The results also revealed that while they perceived MALL as useful and flexible for learning Korean toward increased language skills, motivation, autonomy, and critical thinking, technical problems, and connectivity issues remain to be the main challenges. This study discusses some concerns in implementing MALL and its implications for future research.

Abstract

Epistemic modality is expressed through various grammatical forms, adverbs, and certain phrases that indicate degrees of certainty, doubt, or speculation. This research aims to determine the various forms and meanings of epistemic modality used by the speakers. The method used in this research was a descriptive qualitative method. The data source was a discussion entitled “Moon Jae-in Jeongbu, Jipgap Japgi Seonggonghalkka?”. The data collection techniques used in this research were literature study, listening, and note taking. The research employed the analysis technique proposed by Miles and Huberman, namely Interactive Model. The analysis results showed that there were nine out of eleven forms of epistemic modality: {(N)}, {(V)}, {(N) (V)}, {(N) (AUX)}, {(N) (COP)}, {(N) (AUX-Sfx) (Vneg)}, {(-Sfx) (V)}, {(AUX)}, and {(-SfxThe {(N) (V)} appears the most. This form is fully productive because it has a semantic appropriateness. Furthermore, the analysis results demonstrated that there were three gradients in the meaning of epistemic modality used by the speakers: certainty, probability, and possibility. The probability appears the most. This means that participants in the discussion are quite confident of their speech. The research results indicate that the participants in the discussion employed various ways to express the certainty, probability, and possibility of their speech.

Abstract

This article aims to identify and compare educational values contained in Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih, folklore from Indonesia, and Kong Ji Pat Ji from Korea through literary comparison. The study uses the qualitative descriptive method. Indonesian folklore was obtained through the 100-folklore book, and the origin of Korean folklore was obtained through the classic Korean folktale collection book. These two folk stories are similar: a main character living in a family where one parent dies and has a half-sister. Another similarity is that of the daughter in the family. Altogether, however, the text of these two folklores is different. The differences are found in text structures such as characters, settings, and grooves—furthermore, conflicts encountered in two different folklore. In the story of Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih, the protagonist seeks her stepmother's clothes, while in the story of Kong Ji Pat Ji fills the hollow. These two folk tales can be used as educational tools for moral and ethical values for readers of different cultural backgrounds.

Known for its unique charm, Bali remains a favorite destination for domestic and international tourists. In 2023, South Korean tourists made up 4.3% of international visitors to Bali, totaling 226,789 arrivals. This recovery has created a growing need for professionals proficient in Korean to support tourism services. Vocational High Schools (SMK) are pivotal in preparing students to meet this demand. To enhance their skills, a community service program was conducted at SMKN 3 Denpasar, focusing on basic Korean language proficiency for tourism purposes. The program used a blended learning approach, combining online sessions via Zoom with face-to-face classes. Twenty students participated in the training, which included specialized teaching materials, a structured syllabus, and practical exercises. Key outcomes included a Korean language guide for tourism, intellectual property rights registration, publication in a national journal, media coverage, and a video documentation of the activities.
