Abstract

Nilai-nilai budaya tradisonal cenderung mulai tergerus oleh perkembangan zaman. Generasi muda Bengkulu cenderung kurang mengenal warisan budaya mereka sendiri.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of the Serawai language as a means of interpersonal communication in Tanjung Menang Village, Seginim District, South Bengkulu Regency. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants consisted of the village head, traditional leader, community members, and a university student selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Joseph A. DeVito’s interpersonal communication theory, which includes openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. The findings indicate that the Serawai language is still actively used in family communication, traditional ceremonies, village meetings, and daily social interactions. The use of the Serawai language supports the creation of communication that is more open, empathetic, supportive, positive, and equal. It also functions as a cultural identity and social binder that strengthens relationships among community members. However, there is a tendency of decreasing use among younger generations due to modernization and the dominance of the Indonesian language. Therefore, collective efforts are needed to preserve the Serawai language as a cultural heritage and an effective means of interpersonal communication within the community.

Abstract

This study examines the role of intercultural communication in resolving social conflicts in multicultural societies, with a case study in the Sukakarya District community, Musi Rawas Regency. Amidst the increasingly complex dynamics of cultural diversity, differences in values, norms, and perceptions between community groups often trigger social conflicts. Intercultural communication is considered a strategic instrument that can create mutual understanding and reduce tensions that arise due to these differences. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The data obtained were analyzed thematically to identify communication mechanisms that have been implemented by the community in reducing conflicts, as well as to reveal supporting factors for the success of intercultural interactions. Initial findings indicate that empathy, adaptation, and appreciation for the cultural identity of each group play an important role in creating social harmony. The results of this study are expected to provide significant contributions to the development of effective intercultural communication models, as well as provide strategic recommendations for policy makers and communication practitioners in designing preventive and adaptive intervention programs. Thus, this study not only enriches academic discourse but also becomes a practical reference in efforts to strengthen social integration and reduce conflict in multicultural societies.

Abstract

This study aims to understand interpersonal communication among interfaith couples in maintaining harmonious family relationships in Rama Agung Village, North Bengkulu. Interfaith marriage represents a social reality within Indonesia’s multicultural society, characterized by differences in values, beliefs, and religious practices in family life. These differences may potentially lead to conflict if not managed through effective communication. This research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the lived experiences of couples in building family harmony. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation, involving the interfaith couple as primary informants and extended family members as supporting informants. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, coding, theme development, and essence description. The findings indicate that effective interpersonal communication—characterized by openness, empathy, positiveness, supportiveness, and equality—serves as the primary foundation for maintaining family harmony. In addition, the socially tolerant village environment strengthens the stability of interfaith family relationships. Therefore, family harmony is not determined by religious similarity but by the consistent quality of interpersonal communication established within the family.
