Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to describe morphological errors in Indonesian language compositions written by foreign language learners at the Alekawa Language & Culture Center. The morphological errors will be described in this study are errors found in affixation, reduplication, and abbreviation. This study uses a qualitative research design by involving documentation in the form of BIPA students' essays at Alekawa to collect phenomena to be studied and discussed in depth. This study uses data cards to analyze documents in the form of BIPA student essays. The data obtained were analyzed by using corder error analysis technique. The results of this study show that there are 22 morphological errors in the BIPA students' essays, namely there are 21 affixation errors and 1 reduplication error. In this study, no words using abbreviations were found in the writings of A1-level BIPA students because the grammar of abbreviations had not yet been taught to A1-level BIPA students, so BIPA students did not use abbreviations in their writing. The results of this study are expected to provide feedback for BIPA teachers, BIPA institutions, and further researchers. This research is also expected to be a reference material for BIPA teachers to be able to improve the learning of BIPA grammar morphology material at the A1 level. Keywords: BIPA learning, writing skills, morphology, essay, language errors

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences of local educators teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) in Timor-Leste, specifically at two educational institutions: Escola Secundaria Geral (ESG) and Escola Técnica Vocacional (ESTV). Using a reflective qualitative approach with a collective case study design, the research involved six active teachers as key participants. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, open-ended questionnaires, and analysis of instructional documents, then examined using thematic coding and narrative reflection. The findings show that teachers developed task-based learning strategies, culturally relevant media, and contextual approaches despite facing structural limitations. Lesson plans generally demonstrated moderate alignment with Graduate Competency Standards (SKL), though they need improvement in goal setting, cultural integration, and rubric-based assessment. This study emphasizes teachers’ voices as essential sources of curricular knowledge, shifting focus from macro-level policy to reflective classroom practice. Consequently, BIPA is seen not just as a language teaching initiative but as a form of soft diplomacy that strengthens bilateral relations between Indonesia and Timor-Leste through intercultural education.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of integrating adaptive conversational AI models in enhancing language proficiency—specifically speaking and listening skills and learning motivation among BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) learners. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 30 BIPA learners at ESGC São João de Brito, Liquica, Timor-Leste. Participants were divided into an experimental group utilizing an adaptive conversational AI model and a control group following conventional teaching methods. Data collection encompassed language proficiency tests (speaking and listening), questionnaires to gauge learning motivation, and direct classroom observation. Results: The findings revealed significant improvements in the experimental group's speaking and listening abilities compared to the control group. Furthermore, learners using AI exhibited higher motivation levels, engaged in more active classroom interactions, and held positive perceptions of the AI-based approach, whereas the control group did not demonstrate comparable gains. Novelty: This research underscores the distinct potential of adaptive conversational AI not only for improving oral communication but also for fostering intercultural competence among BIPA learners. It offers valuable insights for designing innovative, responsive, and learner-centered teaching strategies within technology-integrated BIPA curricula.

Abstract

This community engagement program was initiated in response to the linguistic needs of foreign students from the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST), Philippines, who required Indonesian language proficiency to participate effectively in a student exchange program with the Institute of Technology and Business Asia Malang, Indonesia. The partner institution faced two primary challenges: the absence of a practical and systematic Indonesian language training program for foreign learners and the limited initial language competence among NEUST students. Interestingly, structural similarities between Tagalog and Indonesian—particularly in basic morphemes and affixation patterns—offered a promising foundation for language acquisition. The program aimed to introduce fundamental Indonesian language proficiency equivalent to BIPA Level 4, focusing on communicative competence in academic and social contexts. It was conducted online through five sessions, including one orientation, four core training sessions based on the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) approach, and one evaluation session. The learning materials were adapted from Sahabatku Indonesia – BIPA 4, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The outcomes demonstrated significant improvement in participants’ linguistic competence, reflected in higher evaluation scores and active engagement throughout the training. Additional outcomes included online media publications and the adoption of the developed modules as sustainable BIPA teaching materials at NEUST. Overall, this initiative represents an effort in Indonesian language diplomacy, contributing to the strengthening of academic mobility and intercultural collaboration across Southeast Asia.
