Abstract

The globalization of the Indonesian language through the Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) programme has evolved from a simple linguistic exercise into a sophisticated instrument of cultural diplomacy and international education. As Indonesia's economic and cultural influence grows, more and more international students, researchers, and professionals want to learn the language. The pedagogical challenge in BIPA has transitioned from the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary to the cultivation of sociopragmatic competence. Research highlights a critical realization: the primary obstacle for international students is not necessarily cognitive or linguistic capacity but a lack of understanding regarding the cultural discourse that governs thinking and speaking within the Indonesian context. This suggests that language and culture are inextricably linked, forming a singular nexus where communication only becomes meaningful through the lens of cultural orientation

Abstract

BIPA learning integrated with cultural tourism is increasingly implemented; however, available teaching materials remain largely descriptive and have not sufficiently fostered intercultural competence. Narrative approaches such as storynomics offer potential to bridge cross-cultural understanding, particularly in the cultural relationship between Indonesia and South Korea. This study aims to describe BIPA students’ perceptions of kingdom-based tourism as teaching material, identify key dimensions of student responses to the implementation of storynomics, and map Indonesian–South Korean storynomics patterns adaptable for BIPA instruction. A qualitative approach was employed using questionnaires, observations, and interviews seven South Korean students. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and thematic exploration. The findings reveal three main dimensions thatinfluence student perceptions: engagement with royal narratives that generate meaningful learning, preference for intercultural approaches over monocultural ones, and the need for critical reflection on cultural symbols. Comparative analysis indicates contrasting orientations: South Korea emphasizes digitization and standardization, whereas Indonesia prioritizes authenticity and philosophical depth. These findings suggest that cross-cultural narratives provide a foundation for developing BIPA teaching materials. This study recommends developing storynomics-based material prototypes integrating elements of Indonesian and Korean royal culture to support intercultural learning. These implications provide practical direction for the development of BIPA teaching materials.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the potential of integrating local culture in BIPA materialss through semiotic analysis of the song “Lir-ilir.” Using qualitative descriptive methods and Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, the song lyrics were examined in this study. This study showed that denotatively, the song “Lir-ilir” describes rural life. Connotatively, the song is an invitation to improve attitude. Mythologically, the song shows the integration of social, cultural, and religious aspects. The song “Lir-ilir” has cultural values that can be internalized in BIPA materials by studying vocabulary, listening, singing, reading the meaning, and transforming the song “Lir-ilir.” This study contributes to the potential internationalization of Indonesian language through a culture-based approach. The research novelties of this study lie in analyzing the semiotics contained in the song “Lir-ilir” and identifying its potential in BIPA materials as a process of internationalizing Indonesian language and culture. The results of this analysis and potential identification are part of the process of internationalizing the Indonesian language and culture. BIPA course institutions and teachers can develop this teaching material design to enrich the reference of teaching materials and BIPA learning methods that meet the needs of BIPA learners.

Abstract

The internal difficulties of Muhammadiyah University Kendari's BIPA program are examined in this descriptive qualitative study using case studies. The results point to three primary barriers: pedagogical proficiency and instructional materials, students' language skills (pronunciation and structuring), cultural adjustment, and facility limitations. To solve these challenges, educators, staff, and students can employ solution ideas to create implementative plans and tactical actions. This study develops strategic recommendations to enhance the program's efficacy through rigorous triangulation, document analysis, interviews, and participatory observation. This strengthening is essential as a tool of cultural diplomacy in the global arena to develop a creative, relevant, and adaptable learning ecosystem for international learners in the digital era, in addition to boosting the quality of education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the comparative sentence structures of Indonesian (BI) and Tetun, and their implications for teaching Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) in Timor Leste. This qualitative study utilizes a contrastive analysis method, with data consisting of sentence structures from both languages. The results show significant differences, particularly in the word order of possessive noun phrases and the use of grammatical particles. These differences have the potential to cause negative interference, which is a major source of difficulty for BIPA learners who are native Tetun speakers. The similarity in basic sentence patterns, such as the S-P-O structure, can facilitate the learning process. This research provides practical recommendations for BIPA instructors to develop teaching modules that focus on these areas of difficulty to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of affixation in narrative texts that highlight natural phenomena and the experiences of the speakers in them. Affixation is one of the morphological processes in Indonesian that plays an important role in word formation, word class changes, and the development of meaning in a discourse. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research data are in the form of linguistic units containing affixation processes found in the text, including prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and confixes. The data collection technique was carried out using the listening and note-taking method through careful reading of the analyzed text. The results of the study show that the analyzed text contains the use of prefixes, suffixes, and confixes, while infixes are not found. The dominant prefixes used include me-, di-, ber-, and ter- which function to form active verbs, passive verbs, and express states and events. Suffixes such as -an, -itas, and -nya play a role in forming concrete and abstract nouns, as well as providing emphasis on meaning in sentences. In addition, the confixes me-kan, me-i, and ke--an are used to form causative meanings, processes, and certain states or situations. The absence of infixes indicates that the text makes greater use of productive and commonly used affixation forms in modern Indonesian.
