Abstract

Giant condyloma acuminata (GCA) is one of sexually transmitted infections caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection, specifically HPV types 6 and 11. Giant condyloma acuminata is a rare disease with an incidence of around 0.1%. The age distribution peaked in 25-29 years. The higher prevalence of infection is associated with number of sexual partners, history of chlamydia and gonorrhea infection, smoking and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. A 24 years old male presented with a cauliflower-like mass on the penis that has been growing slowly for 2 years. Physical examination of the penis revealed a pedunculated reddish verrucous mass, mobile, well-defined, 5x2x1.5 cm in size, and positive acetowhite test. The histopathological picture is in accordance with condyloma acuminata. Surgery with wide margin excision was performed to remove the lump. After 14 days post-surgery, the wound was healed completely without any sign of recurrence.

Abstract

Background: Previous studies of Community Associated Pneumonia (CAP) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), patients have shown that D-Dimer increases higher in severe cases and can be used as a prognostic biomarker and whilst D-Dimer> 1 mcg/ ml tends to be death for hospitalized adult patient with a diagnosis of Covid-19. However, D-Dimer's role in Covid-19 patients has not been fully studied.  We aim to conduct research on D-Dimer as a parameter of Clinical Severity and Death of Covid-19 Patients in Islamic Hospital, in Surabaya. Methods: This type of research is an analytic observational study with a retrospective approach. The population in this study were all patient’s data retrieved from the Dahlia Room’s database from June to July 2020 which were taken through EMR (an Electrical Medical Records) from a total of 189 patients with the total sample of 82 patients. Data analysis in this study used chi-square (X2) with a significant value of p <0.05. Results: Age over 60 years is associated with a higher risk of severe Covid-19 infection (P<0.05). A history of hypertension significantly affects the severity of Covid-19 infection (P < 0.05). The proportion of recoveries (53.7%) was higher than the number of deaths (46.3%), although the majority of patients experienced severe clinical severity (39%).  Laboratory parameters, such as D-dimer values, correlated significantly with patient age (P = 0.027, <0.05). Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of factors such as age and history of comorbid diseases in predicting the severity of Covid-19 infection. A better understanding of these risk factors can help in more effective management and management of Covid-19 patients.

Abstract

Background: Insufficient maternal consumption of vitamin D can have adverse effects on fetal development and increase the likelihood of low birth weight. This research aimed to establish the correlation between the quantity of vitamin D consumed by expectant mothers and the weight of newborns. Methods: This study utilized an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, collecting data from August to November 2022. Information on Vitamin D intake and birthweight was obtained via questionnaire interviews with 96 pregnant women delivering at the University of North Sumatera Hospital or Maharani Women’s and Children Hospital. Semi-Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQs) served as the data collection instrument. Non-probability consecutive sampling was employed. Statistical techniques, including Chi-square and Fisher's Exact test, were used for data analysis. Findings indicated a prevalence of inadequate vitamin D intake among mothers (3.125%). The mean daily consumption of vitamin D among expectant women was 19.99 μg/day. Mother's education level did not significantly influence the outcome (p=0.589). Results: The results of this study suggest that there was no significant association between maternal age at pregnancy (p=0. 135), gestational age (p=0. 771), parity (p=0958), and baby's sex (p=0. 448) with birth weight. Conclusion: An observed association existed between the prenatal intake of vitamin D and neonatal birth weight in expectant mothers.

Abstract

A spinal cord injury is an uncommon discovery in a clay-shoveler’s fracture. Multiple syncope could be caused by bradycardia which followed a spinal cord injury. These combination findings adds its rarity.  This case report aim to share awareness among physicians of the  rare complication of spinal cord injury and its management. This descriptive report also narratively review other literature. Physicians should aware of SCIWORA (Spinal Cord Injury Without Radiographic Abnormalities), neurogenic shock and prolonged bradycardia as one of its complications and it may warrant a cardiac pace maker to avoid cardiac arrest and other complication.

Abstract

Background: Foodborne diseases are infections of the gastrointestinal tract caused by food containing microbiological agents and usually, these infections affect groups of individuals who have low immune systems. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB)are bacillus-shaped Gram-positive bacteria that work by inhibiting pathogenic bacteria that cause foodborne diseases. Maluku is a region in Indonesia rich in sago production.  Sago ihur (Metroxylon sylvestre) and tuni (Metroxylon rumphii) are types of sago commonly found in Maluku. Sago is rich in carbohydrates and therefore has the opportunity to produce LAB. This study aimed to isolate and characterize LAB from sago wastewater was a laboratory experimental research with descriptive method using primary data. Methods: Bacterial isolation was carried out using a selective media. Characterization carried out by macroscopicly characterization by observing shape, margin, elevation, pigmentation, appearance, optical properties, and texture. Microscopic characterization was performed using Gram and spore staining. Results: The results of this study showed that five bacterial isolates (I1, I2, T3, T4, and I5) were successfully isolated in a round shape, flat edges, yellowish white color (not pigmented), shiny appearance, and mucoid texture, but isolate T3 showed a raised elevation and translucent to light (transparent), while for other isolates it was convex and translucent, and non-spore forming gram positive. Conclusion: Antibacterial tests against S. aureus and E. coli showed no inhibition zones. LAB isolates from sago wastewater showed no significant antibacterial effect

Abstract

This study was undertaken to investigate the antidiabetic and antioxidant of bawang dayak bulbs (Eleutherine palmifolia L., Merr) extract (BDBE) on skeletal muscle cell apoptosis and body weight change in diabetic rat. Single doses alloxan 120 mg/kgBW were administered intraperitoneally to get diabetic rat. Twenty four male Wistar rat of three months old were used in this study. Rat were devided into six groups: negative control group (were not diabetic and treated) (K0), positive control group (were diabetic and treated CMC-Na) (K1), drug control group (were diabetic and administrated metformin as a standard drug) (K2), BDBE dosed 200 (P1), 400 (P2), and 800 mg/kgBW (P3). The treatment was conducted for 14 days. Hypoglycemic effect and body weight measured of all mice was determined at day 7 and 14 of treatment. At the end of research, all of rat were sacrificed and m. gastrocnemius were collected for apoptosis analysis by TUNEL staining and atrophy analysis by Hematoxilin-Eosin staining. The result of this study showed that BDBE decreased skeletal muscle cell apoptosis and mantained the skeletal muscle fiber diameter (atrophy) and body weight change in diabetes rat.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is multisystem specific disorder in pregnancy. Preeclampsia characterized by increased cytokine Interleukin-6 and β hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin). Spirulina is green-blue alga contain antioxidant, vitamin, mineral. Spirulina has a potential effect as antiinflammation. The aim of this research was to know effect of spirulina to repair trophoblast at β hCG level of pregnant rats with preeclampsia condition (biology material collecting). The type of this research is an experimental laboratory with post-test only control group design. Preeclampsia models induced by Interleukin-6. Twenty-five rats were grouped to five group: Control, Control Positive, Spirulina dose 10, 20, and 40 mg/day, at the end of treatment, β hCG level were analyzed. Statistical analysis was used by one-way ANOVA. The results of this study showed that β hCG level of group spirulina dose 10 mg/day (85.11 ± 25.70 mIU/ml) did not significantly different (p=0.353), with group Dose 20 mg/day (79.65 ± 10.65 mIU/ml). Level of β hCG in Spirulina group dose 40 mg/day were 93.28 ± 17.12 mIU/ml. The spirulina groups dose 10 mg/day and dose 40 mg/day did not show significantly different level of β hCG (0.730> 0.05). Administration of spirulina at a dose of 10 mg was able to significantly reduce levels of β hCG (P <0.05) than at doses of 20 mg / day and 40 mg/ day.

Abstract

The purpose of this case report was to have a further study of the proper management of ocular manifestations caused by Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, which aims to minimize the chances of complications. This case report will discuss the ocular manifestations of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. A case report. A 4 years old girl with the problem on admission was the adhesion of her membranes layer (conjunctiva) and eyelid on both of her eyes. The patient’s family also gave additional information on the patient’s eyes problem: pain on both her eyes, tearing, discharge which came out frequently from her eyes, and a white spot in the black section of her eyes. The fluorescein test revealed a positive result, with conjunctival hyperemia. The case was treated as symblepharon and corneal erosion post Stevens-Johnson syndrome, for temporary treatment using artificial tears and antibiotic eye ointment. Ocular manifestations occur in a significant number of patients, and the most severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome occurs in those at the end of the spectrum. The acute phase of the disease is characterized primarily by eyelid involvement. The lids are typically swollen and erythematous. Soon after that, or coincident with this, the conjunctiva is inflamed. Conjunctivitis frequently parallels the skin findings, with bullae formation and eruption. Membrane or pseudo-membrane formation then occurs. The healing process can result in cicatricial changes, including symblepharon, ankyloblepharon, eyelid margin rotation, severe dry eye, and conjunctivilization of the cornea.
