Abstract

Learning vocabulary in a second or foreign language is necessary for effective communication. Because the process of memorizing vocabulary is boring and stressful for some high school students, they have poor vocabulary knowledge. This study is focused on investigating whether or not there is an effect of using Kahoot! on senior high school students' vocabulary achievement. This research was conducted in two classes, one of which was used as an experimental class, and the other was a control class. The duration of the treatment is two weeks, and the third week is to do a post-test. This research was carried out in one of the high schools in Jember City. To measure participants' achievement in vocabulary learning after the experiment, a vocabulary achievement test was developed by the researchers. To check the validity of the hypothesis, an independent sample t-test was run to determine the significant difference between the mean post-test score and the SPSS. The results of the study indicate that Kahoot is effective in improving the vocabulary learning of the experimental group.

Abstract

Indonesia is taking proactive steps to enhance disaster resilience and safeguard its citizens through the implementation of the Satuan Pendidikan Aman Bencana (SPAB). However, in disaster contexts, children with special needs and disabilities (SEND) are frequently overlooked. To further improve SPAB implementation, this research aims to investigate the cause-and-effect relationships between the compliance-based status of disaster prevention and risk reduction education in special education schools, the challenges teachers face, and the strategies employed in teaching disaster education to children with special needs and disabilities. The study employed ex post facto research design to investigate the cause-and-effect relationships between variables. Data from interviews and brief surveys were analysed using the phi coefficient, a nonparametric tool that assesses the strength and direction of correlations between variables. The researchers collected information from twenty-three special education teachers, and thirteen school principals and public relations officers across twelve special education schools in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The results suggest that compliance-based implementation has an inverse effect on the main challenges that teachers encounter. As the quality of compliance with the specific provisions in SPAB increases, the barriers to teaching disaster education among students with special needs and disabilities decrease. However, it is important to consider that not all challenges that emerged during the implementation of disaster education were influenced by mere compliance with the SPAB provisions.

Abstract

In an era where educational reforms serve as both a beacon of hope and a source of contention, the New Education Policy (NEP) of Bangladesh emerges as a critical site for exploring the dynamic interplay between policy ideals and classroom realities. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, it seeks to examine teachers interpretations and responses to policy reforms, their challenges and opportunities, and the impact of the NEP on education quality. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining a survey of 48 teachers from seven distinct schools, with nine providing in-depth interviews. The findings reveal significant discrepancies in teachers understanding of the policys objectives, with a notable portion expressing dissatisfaction with its clarity and alignment with student needs. While some educators acknowledge a shift towards student-centered learning, others highlight the obstacles posed by insufficient resources, professional development, and curriculum adjustments. However, to address the limitations of this study, future studies can expand the scope to include different regions and explore the long-term effects of NEP on student outcomes. Furthermore, educators and policymakers must collaborate to ensure that ongoing professional development and resource allocation are prioritized to facilitate successful educational reform.

Abstract

In the last ten years, there has been considerable growth in empirical studies examining the effects of digital games on mathematics learning and computational thinking (CT). However, a review of the existing literature indicates that the outcomes of digital game-enhanced math instruction on students' CT skills have yielded inconsistent results. This research intends to evaluate how effective digital game-supported mathematics education is in developing students' CT abilities, while taking into account various factors such as educational level, duration of the intervention, learning context, game developer, and type of game. A meta-analytic review was conducted, analyzing 15 pertinent studies published between 2011 and 2023, which produced 21 effect sizes and included a total of 8,911 students. Statistical analyses, including the Q Cochrane test, publication bias assessment, Z test, and sensitivity analyses, were performed using CMA software to scrutinize the data. The results indicated a statistically significant but modest positive effect (g = 0.344; p < 0.05) of digital game-supported math education on students' CT skills. Several factors, including the length of the intervention, the software developer, and the type of game, significantly impacted CT outcomes, whereas other factors, such as educational level and learning environment, did not show a significant influence. These findings suggest that digital game-supported mathematics instruction can be an effective technological approach to enhance students' computational thinking abilities.

Abstract

Completing final projects is a pivotal milestone for Diploma IV (Applied Bachelor) students. However, the incidence of project failure remains a concerning issue. Exploring the underlying factors contributing to this failure is crucial for devising effective interventions to bolster student success. Despite the significance of final projects, many students struggle to complete them. This research explores the root causes of final project failure among Diploma IV students, focusing on internal and external influences. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze survey data from 59 respondents undertaking their final projects. Using the Fishbone Diagram, the analysis uncovered a spectrum of factors contributing to project failure. These factors encompassed internal challenges such as time management and motivation, external issues including academic support and institutional policies, and personal factors such as mental health and coping abilities. Understanding these multifaceted factors provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by students and informs the development of targeted interventions to support their academic success.
