Abstract

The importance of seagrasses in terms of ecological and economic benefits are well-known. This paper describes the status of research on seagrasses conducted so far, with relevance to the North Sulawesi region. Most of the studies done in Indonesia, especially in North Sulawesi, have focused on species richness and biodiversity as well as basic biological questions such as biomass and morphometric differences of certain seagrass species between sampling localities. While several studies have been conducted, there is a general need for Indonesian marine scientists to expand research areas related to food-web dynamics and inter-connectivity of major fishery and nursery habitats (mangroves-seagrass-coral reefs) with the aid of modern tools (e.g. molecular approach).   Keywords: benefits, biology, ecology, economic, seagrass

Abstract

In increasing fish farming production, it is very dependent on the availability of fish feed which has recently been expensive. To overcome this, was necessary to find alternative feeds that have nutritional value according to the needs of cultivated organisms. Maggot (Hermetia illucens Linn.) is a black soldier fly larvae that has a chewy texture, high protein and has the ability to secrete natural enzymes that help improve the digestive system of fish. . The aimed of this research was to find out the amount of maggot (H. illucens Linn.) production in several cultivation media with different treatments. The  results of the study found that it took up to 2 weeks to produce maggot that had ready to be used as feed. Maggot had the potential to be cultivated as an alternative to fish feed.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotic on growth and survival of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) against Streptococcus agalactiae infection. The test materials used were commercial probiotic bacteria and Streptococcus agalactiae. The probiotic bacteria were administered by mixing into the feed with a dose of 0 mL (without probiotics), 10 mL / kg of feed, 15 mL / kg of feed and 20 mL / kg of feed.  Feed was given 3 times a day at 08.00, 12.00 and 16.00 for 21 days. After that, the challenge test was done with Streptococcus  agalactiae bacteria by cohabitation. Bacteria with a density of 107 cells / mL were mixed into the water and allowed for 2 hours. The result showed that B treatment (10 mL / kg of feed) gave the best result with 93,33 percent of  survival rate. Statistical analysis showed that the survival of fish in treatments B, C and D was significantly different from treatment A (P <0.1). However, there was no significant difference between treatments B, C, and D. It was also found that the addition of probiotic in feed did not affect the growth of Nile tilapia (Orechromis niloticus). Keywords : Probiotic bacteria,  nile tilapia,  Streptococcus  agalactiae, growth,  infection
