Abstract

Scientific reasoning is an ability to argue the concept of knowledge using scientific principles to build a deep understanding. Scientific reasoning is one of the essential skills in the 21st century as a provision in facing global challenges. Scientific reasoning is also one of the skills needed in learning physics because, in essence, physics learning requires a deep understanding of concepts. The fact shows that the scientific reasoning skills of students are still low. Students tend to solve problems without recognizing ideas and have a tendency to plug and chug as much as they remember, so learning is needed that can improve scientific reasoning skills. This scientific reasoning skill can be applied by combining guided inquiry learning models with multidimensional thinking diagram aids that are packaged in the form of student worksheets. Implementing the guided inquiry learning model will help students in the reasoning process because each process directs students to follow several methods and practices that are similar to scientists in building knowledge. Multidimensional thinking diagrams can help students in each inquiry process and assist students in analyzing and solving problems. Guided inquiry accompanied by multidimensional thinking diagrams can improve scientific reasoning skills.

Abstract

Chemical bonding is an important topic in chemistry. The chemistry students have to expert on the topic. Due to the importance of chemical bonding topic, qualitative descriptive research was conducted to analyze the students' errors in solving the chemical bond problems. The participants were 38 students of the third semester of Chemistry Education Department in one of the universities in Aceh, Indonesia. The result showed that the percentage of the students’ errors in solving the chemical bonds problems was high with an average of 69.08%, it means that the students’ ability in understanding chemical bond concepts is still low. This research concludes two things. First, the types of errors in solving chemical bonds problems are the students’ error in understanding the basic concepts of chemical bonds, lack of understanding of the concept how an element has a stable electron configuration, the mechanism of the difference in the forming of ion bonds and covalent bonds, the influence of geometric figures, the resultant molecular dipole moments, the number of electronegativity to molecular pollutants, the writing of a Lewis structure for molecules and polyatomic ions, the determining of the formal contents of each atom of a Lewis molecular structure, and the drawing of the Lewis structure. Second, the causes of students’ errors have forgotten the materials and also pre-requisite materials and inaccurate in reading and solving the problems. These results need to be considered in the learning process in order to improve students’ ability in solving chemical bond problems.

Abstract

The fabrication of phase-changed composite (PCC) utilized to store thermal energy through encapsulation has been performed by utilizing the stearate acid (SA) and modified graphene (mG) with sentrimoinum bromide (CTAB). The composite was fabricated via latex method, while the liquid SA was able to be encapsulated and stabilized due to the presence of mG. The active phase of SA altered to be a thermal storing site obtained from latent heat, while the mG wall has protective features which can prevent the leakage of SA core during the transition phase. The active phase itself increased the thermal conductivity from 4.93 W/mK to 7.65 W/mK with maximum storing energy for 84.8%. The stable form of mG was measured extremely low for 2 phr with an average particle size of 13.68 nm. Thus, mG wall has excellent thermal stability and effective protection in shielding the SA core which improves the thermal properties of the composite.

Abstract

Iron sand is a source of natural magnetic material which is quite abundant. Iron sand can be useful as a magnetic source material which has the potential as a raw material for using magnetic materials. Iron sand contains non magnetic minerals which can reduce its magnetic properties. Therefore, iron sand sample preparation was carried out by washing NaOH 0,4 M and sand sample size variations. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of washing and the size of iron sand on the magnetic properties in terms of the increase in magnetic elements. The results of research with XRF (X-Ray Fluoresence) show that iron sand with a size of 120 mesh has a magnetic content of Fe (78.07%) higher than iron sand with a size of 80 mesh with Fe content (34.63%). XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) analysis shows that washing iron sand with a size of 80 mesh gives a quarts phase (SiO2) at 2θ = 27.62° and iron sand washing with a size of 120 mesh gives the main peak magnetite phase (Fe3O4) at 2θ = 30.69° with a crystallinity of 15%. VSM (Vibrating Sample Magnetometer) analysis depicted on the hysteresis curve shows that the smaller the particle size of iron sand, the higher the magnetic properties. There are still minor oxides in iron sand as  oxide minerals.

Abstract

This research aims to formulate and assess the efficacy of the peel-off mask as an anti-acne of ethanol extract from bilimbi leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.).  The method used was an experiment, evaluating the extract through the inhibition test of Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria with the paper disk diffusion method. The peel-off mask formulation added the extract with a concentration of 7% (F1), 9% (F2), 11% (F3), and without using extract (F0). The Peel-off mask preparation testing includes the detection of scents, colours, irritation checks, and the determination of peel-off anti-acne mask efficacy. This study was carried out at Akafarma of Banda Aceh and the Chemistry laboratory of FKIP Unsyiah. The findings of the inhibition zone for Staphylococcus epidermis bacteria at extract concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% were 15 mm, 12 mm, 11 mm and 10 mm, respectively. The four peel-off mask formulas were gel, homogeneous, brown, with the distinctive scent of bilimbi leaves, and did not irritate the volunteers’ skin. The average decline in acne before and after using the mask for any formula (F0, FI, FII, and FIII) was 19.64%, 22.63%, 28.75% and 50%, respectively. The peel-off mask of ethanol extract of bilimbi leaves (Averrhoa bilimbi L.) is effective as an anti-acne treatment.
