Abstract

Atmospheric water generator (AWG) is a device for producing water from humid air. The water is produced by cooling the air until below its dew point temperature. This study presents the optimization of a simple thermoelectric AWG device (S-TEAWG) for emergency purposes. The designed S-TEAWG consists of a thermoelectric module and condensation plate as a cooler and condensation surface, respectively. The plate is attached to the cold side of the thermoelectric module to enhance the contact surface area with the ambient air. The thermoelectric module with the dimension of 4 cm × 4 cm is operated at 12 V of voltage and 50 oC of hot side temperature. The device is installed vertically thus the condensates flow down naturally due to gravity. Various surface areas of vertical plates, from 0.01 m2 to 0.09 m2, are evaluated theoretically to obtain the maximum water production. The results show that the lower temperature of the vertical plate is achieved at a smaller surface area. However, the optimum surface area is obtained at 0.03 m2 with 60.9 ml/d of water production.

Abstract

Corrosion happens differently for each point of hull plate which caused of corrosion rate differences. So that is very important to measure it for each point, which is calculated using Weight Gain Loss Method. The measurement of plate thickness that used is Ultrasonic Test Method conducted by PT BKI. To determine the condition of ship protection, then the coating and sacrificial anode system is evaluated by testing the composition and current and voltage of anode as well. Furthermore, the number and position of anode is also analyzed. So that the re-design of cathode protection is needed by referring to the PT BKI’s standards. Then the prediction of corrosion rate is calculated by using the design of cathode protection. The largest corrosion rates are in the amidships and portside for each plate lane, they are on the keel plate point K3 is 0.37 mm/years, pedestal plate point A4 is 1.05 mm/years, bilge plate point B4 is 0.62 mm/years and side plate point C5 is 0.39 mm/years. But the number of installed anode is 31 anodes with an irregular position. So in this study, done the redesign system of cathode protection based on regulations issued by PT BKI, with the result of the number of the anode is 56 units. Using the design, then carried a prediction by the result is lower, that on the keel plate is 0.073 mm/years, pedestal plate is 0.021 mm/years, bilge plate is 0.013 mm/years and the side plate is 0.014 mm/years.

Abstract

Fossil energies as un-renewable energies have been getting depletion. Therefore, the use of alternative energy should be raised. One of the alternative energies is solar energy. Solar energy does not pollute the environment and is categorized as a renewable energy which is free and plentiful.   In this research, the solar energy was used to heat water by operating granite absorber solar collectors. The water was flowed naturally from a higher tank and adjusted using a valve fitted at the outlet of the collector.  The volumetric rates of the water were 200, 250 and 300 cc/minutes. Two identical solar collectors with an overall dimension of 0,8 m x 1 m x 0,1 m were placed under the sun and faced to the North with an inclination angle of 15°. One collector contained 5 parallel pipes and the other comprised 7 parallel pipes.  Data obtained in this research are glass cover temperatures, an ambient temperature, absorber temperatures, inlet and outlet water temperatures, and water volumetric rates. The results show that the 7 parallel pipe collector products higher outlet water temperature and energy than the 5 parallel pipe collector. Consequently, in the process of energy removal/discharge, the heat stored in the 7 parallel pipe collector runs out quicker.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of air velocity on the rate of drying corn. Corn seeds were placed after the evaporator of an air conditioner, so that the air came out of the evaporator entered the drying chamber. The water in the corn was evaporated and sucked by dry cold air and then it was condensed in the evaporator. The results show that the mass of corn seeds decreases with the time; the drying rate also decreases with the time and mass-based drying rates at low air speeds are faster than at high air speed. The air conditioner can be used for drying seeds.

Abstract

An experimental study regarding the performance of air water harvester was conducted at the natural ambient conditions. The air water harvester consisted of 3 coil evaporators and used R134a as the working fluid. The coil evaporators were constructed from copper tubes with a diameter of 6.35 mm, coil number of 26, and coil diameter of 8 cm. The air intake velocities were 4 m/s, 5 m/s, 6 m/s. The results show that the highest water mass is 1.72 kg for 7 hours at the air velocity of 6 /s, and the total heat transfer rate is 582 J/s. Increasing the air intake velocity raises the fresh water mass and the total heat transfer rate. Based on EUR the machine is not effective yet but based on the price of the water the machine gives benefit.

Abstract

On the water distribution, the connection of pipe bends is typically obtained either in industry or in housing. On the water distribution, it is often gained the lost of energy or head losses. The amount of head losses occurring in the connection of branch pipe is influenced by several factors, such as: diameter, flow, viscosity, and the angle at the bend pipe connections. This study aimed to determine the effect of variation of the connection point of the bend pipe to the head losses and pressure drop. To do it, the researcher uses an experimental method as a tool by varying the bend angle is 30o, 45o, 60o, and 90o. The result shows that head losses and the small pressure drop occur in the bend angle 30o is 73, 23 mm and 907.606 N/m2. While the head losses and pressure drop is the greatest at an angle of 90o, is 74, 80 mm and 1278,899 N/m2.

Abstract

Research has been carried out on the combustion characteristics of Indonesian vegetable oil droplets. Currently, Indonesia is still developing CPO as a source of renewable fuel to replace diesel. The problem is, CPO is used as a food source so that it will affect food scarcity. Vegetable oils used in this study include CCPO, CJO, CCO and CCIO. The volume of the droplets tested was 1.25-1.31 ml and the drops were placed on a 0.1 mm type K thermocouple. The flame characteristics of the droplets tested included flame stability, ignition delay time, and temperature and flame height. The results showed that vegetable oils with higher viscosity produced more stable flames, but had low temperatures and short flames. This is because high viscosity vegetable oils produce less intense microbursts. While the ignition delays time of CCO is faster than CCPO even though it has the highest flash point. This happens because the polar nature of CCO can attract oxygen more strongly. In addition, the fatty acid content of vegetable oils also has a significant impact on fire characteristics. This is indicated by CCO which has a high content of saturated fatty acids and tends to produce a short flame.

Abstract

Seaplanes are aircraft that can land in the waters, this can be done because seaplanes have floaters. Floaters have a role so that the aircraft can float on the water. However, due to the fairly frequent interaction with water, it is necessary to have anti-corrosion treatment, this is because the use of metal as the basic material for making floaters is still dominant. Corrosion can be minimized by using composites as the constituent material. Making composites that can use fibres from nature can also be done such as the use of thorn pandanus fibres so that it will add more material value. In terms of mechanical strength, it is necessary to test to find out how strong the composite material of thorn pandan fibres is. In this study, composite manufacturing was carried out using the vacuum bagging method. The variation for fibre treatment is the duration of soaking time in 3 types of solutions, namely seawater, household wastewater, and river water. Material testing uses tensile tests. The results of tensile show that the relationship of immersion time to tensile strength in household wastewater is the best, all graphs tend to rise as the duration of immersion time increases.

Abstract

The development of composite materials in the field of engineering is increasingly being used. This is because of its properties are superior compared to conventional materials, as the ratio between strength and density are quite high, stiff, the manufacturing process is very simple and resistant to corrosion and fatigue loads. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect the addition of nylon fibers with Epoxy Matrix on the increase in bending strength of epoxy composites.  The objected of this study was the composite of nylon fiber, which is cut 12 mm nylon fiber with epoxy resin as a fastening material. Before performing an experiment testing the tensile fibers has done and known to the stress of 461.22 MPa. There are 3 variations of volume fraction In this experiment, those are volume fraction of 40%, 50%  and  60%, with 3 variation each.  Method in the manufacture of specimens with the way the mould press. Tools to test the specimen is bending test machine (servopulser). Specimens using a standard test of ASTM C 393-94. Bending test results showed that the nylon fiber composite with fiber volume fraction 40% stress of 787.16 MPa, modulus of elasticity of 1.06 GPa, volume fraction of 50% the stress of 902.01 MPa, modulus of elasticity of 1.08 GPa, and for 60% volume fraction of the stress of 950.02 MPa, modulus of elasticity of 0.99 GPa.
