Abstract

This qualitative research discusses black women's resistance and white women's sympathy in The Help film. In the main theory, this research uses Scott's resistance theory, which consists of close Resistance, semi-open resistance, and open resistance. The data in this research includes dialogue and scenes from The Help film, which describe black women's resistance and white women's sympathy. In obtaining the data, this research uses observation by watching the dialogue about black women's resistance and white women's sympathy and documentation by saving this dialogue and scenes from this film. The data in this research is repeatedly analyzed by the interactive technique, which consists of three steps: data reduction in selecting the representative data, data display in creating the table, and data conclusion in concluding the data analysis. This research shows that black women resist white superiority by talking to white women about white people's mistreatment, defending themselves from white people's accusations, and taking revenge on white women. Besides, white women sympathize with black women by writing a book about the black maid, feeling empathy and sorry for the back maid, and taking revenge for black maids.

Abstract

Normal People (2018), a novel by Sally Rooney, presents issues of gender and class through its description of two different perspectives of the main characters, Connell and Marianne. This article examines how this novel depicts issues of gender and class which are portrayed through Connell and Marianne’s relationship as a couple. Using narrative theories by Bal and Genette, as well as Haslanger’s and Raewyn Connell’s theory on gender and Bourdieu’s theory on social class, this article focuses on how the discrimination of gender and class affects Connell’s and Marianne’s relationship. The findings and discussion show the oppression that Marianne experiences is associated with the internalization of oppression, sexism, and misogyny. The discussion also shows that hegemonic masculinity has a role in the matter of how the difference of Connell’s and Marianne’s gender and class is presented. Despite being superior in term of class, Marianne is inferior in term of gender than Connell who comes from a working class society. However, the novel presents how the main characters’ perception changes as in the end they no longer problematize their gender and class. We argue that the novel disagrees with the inferior feeling caused by different gender and class.

Abstract

Environmental problems have become a severe issue in recent decades. The world has started to change due to human activities that affect the natural environment. Deforestation, industrialization, burning fuels, human overpopulation, and many more have triggered climate change. In her novel, Once There Were Wolves, Charlotte McConaghy vividly describes such a condition. This novel exposes how the Scottish Highlands begins to ruin because of the overabundant population of deer. They eat the plant shoots, and that makes the plants die. Moreover, this research intends to investigate human interferences in saving damaged nature as depicted in the novel. This study is a literary criticism since it aims to analyze the object used. Furthermore, the Ecocriticism approach was employed to analyze humans' efforts to help nature return to its natural state. The research method involves a deep reading and understanding of Charlotte McConaghy’s Once There Were Wolves, with a focus on the humans’ effort to rewild nature. The result reveals the portrayal of humans’ actions to help nature back into its natural state by releasing wolves as the apex predator, keeping the forest and vegetation, and finding places to grow trees. Doing those actions helps the Scottish Land back naturally. The deer population decreases and the land becomes a beautiful place to go.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the representation of raciolinguistic ideologies in Young Adult Fiction, with a particular focus on Kelly Yang's novel "Front Desk." The novel, which was published in 2018, serves as a prism through which to examine the interaction between race and language. Raciolinguistic ideologies, as described by Rosa and Flores, pertain to the complex interplay between race and language and how it is actively used to establish and perpetuate social hierarchies and inequalities. This study will use textual analysis to find and examine the linguistic and narrative mechanisms used in "Front Desk" to express and interrogate these raciolinguistic ideologies. The textual analysis results reveal unique linguistic techniques used in "Front Desk," offering light on how characters navigate and negotiate language in connection to their racial identities. The novel's narrative depictions quietly establish and perpetuate racial hierarchies, providing nuanced insights into how language contributes to these social constructions. The research clarifies the novel's portrayal of the progression of individuals' language practices in relation to their racial identities through an examination of character development, providing a greater understanding of raciolinguistic ideologies in narrative form.
