ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

Fruitvale Station is a movie based on the true story of a shooting at a Fruitvale Station in Oakland, California, by a white police officer named Johannes Mehserle against a black man named Oscar Grant III. Oscar Grant, who was the victim of a conflict on a train that stopped at Fruitvale Station, was instead made a suspect in the incident by police officers who wanted to secure the train and was shot dead without any evidence of guilt or legal proceedings first. Thus, using Gordon Allport's Intentional, Explicit Discrimination theory, the authors analyzed the types of racial discrimination in the movie Fruitvale Station. Racial discrimination includes verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. The author’s method to collect data is qualitative descriptive by examining the Fruitvale Station movie to understand the movie as the primary data. The authors will also include the dialogue from the script as secondary data. The findings of this study reveal five discriminatory behaviors (particularly discrimination based on race) committed by white characters against African-American characters in this movie.

Abstract

This study discusses the memory to the mothers in Disney’s fairy tale movies. This study aimed to analyze the princesses’ remembrances to their mothers and the effects of those remembrances by using the nostalgia theory by Linda Hutcheon. Three Disney movies, Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, and Frozen II were studied using descriptive qualitative methods. The result of this study shows that the princesses remember their mothers due to adversities faced in their lives, and this memory is accessed through several media such as mother’s words, the mother’s old dress, the Lullaby, and places. It is also found that those remembrances empower the princesses and have many positive and significant effects on the princesses’ life, such as drawing strength and motivation, knowing the truth, reconstructing their identity, and maintaining self-identity. This positive effect occurs when the princesses have positive perspectives on the memory to past events. It means that it may have a negative effect if the past was taken as trauma or negative events. Furthermore, even though the late mothers can no longer have an influence on their children, their influence remains in the memory of the princesses. Keywords:

Abstract

Okky Madasari is an Indonesian novelist who is popularly known as a critic who used to voice social criticism through her writings. However, such social criticism appears not only in her adult novels but also in her children’s novels. In 2018, she first published a children’s book entitled Mata di Tanah Melus, a novel that talks about the adventures of Matara, a 12-year-old girl in the land of Melus, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This novel receives appreciation both from readers and scholars, and some scholars have examined how social criticism is reflected in the novel. However, none have analysed the reason why Madasari urges social criticism in this children’s book. Therefore, this research aims to discuss the complexity of this children’s book and to uncover why social criticism is insisted in Mata di Tanah Melus. This is descriptive analysis research in which the researchers’ attention focuses on the structure of the novel through close reading. Close reading here means the researchers read the novel several times in the way which Perry Nodelman has suggested: “reading as an adult versus reading as a child” in reading children’s fiction. The result shows that Mata di Tanah Melus is too complex for children’s readers. The complexity can be seen from the high-level language as well as the complicated idea of the story. The complicated issues are clearly seen from the way in which the author insists on social criticism as her ideology, as she has always done in her adult novels. Thus, this research is in line with Nodelman’s theory that there is always a hidden adult in children’s novels.

Abstract

Reflecting on teachers’ feedback and students’ responses, the study investigated students’ challenges in conducting academic writing, their preferences, and attitudes toward feedback, and teachers’ strategies to handle feedback on students’ written works. A case study was administrated. Three teachers and twenty-six undergraduate students were involved in the study. The findings demonstrated that the students were challenged in terms of grammar/surface structures, content, organization, vocabulary, and mechanism. Then, the teachers practiced various feedback i.e.; correction without comment, comment without correction, correction with comments, suggestion, and identification errors. Furthermore, in language use, the teachers’ preferences varied namely Indonesia/L1, English/EFL, and a combination between L1 and EFL. Students preferred those various teachers’ feedback. Then, the students’ attitudes toward handling feedback varied depending on every teacher's feedback type. Furthermore, the study unveiled that students responded positively to their teachers’ feedback such as requesting a more thorough explanation from their teachers, reading earlier pertinent research to improve their writing, and requiring some reflection time in response to their teachers' revisions.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the quality of idiom translation and identify strategies applied by the translator in translating English idiomatic expressions into Indonesian in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne, J.K. Rowling, and John Tiffany. In achieving these goals, this research uses mixed-method approaches. It is analyzed based on the Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) model by Nababan et al. (2012) and Baker’s theory about strategies for translating idioms (2018). Meanwhile, the data was collected through questionnaires distributed to the informants. The research finding showed that the translator applies five idiom translation strategies in 70 data. Based on the frequency, the idiom translation strategies are translation by paraphrase (58.6%), literal translation (27.1%), using the idiom with similar meaning but the dissimilar form (8.6%), using an idiom with similar meaning and form (4.3%), and translation by the omission of play of idiom (1.4%). Meanwhile, the average score for the accuracy of the translation is 2.8. The average score for the acceptability of the translation is 2,8, and the average score for readability is 2.8. Overall, the average score of the English idiom translation quality in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child books is 2,8, which indicates that the translation has good quality, in other words, most of the translation is accurate, acceptable, and easily understood by the target readers

Abstract

The learning process carried out in Indonesia is still dominated by large classes. It contains more than 20 students. This situation sometimes makes it difficult for teachers to conduct assessments because assessing and evaluating each student takes much time. Nowadays, the assessment process is quite diverse; teachers do not only do paper-based tests but can use application assistance. This study aims to see how well the Pintar Apps help teachers conduct student assessments. The method used in this study is qualitative, with instruments in the form of class observations and interviews. The subjects were 15 and 3 English teachers students of SMP Negeri 2 Tayu. The study results revealed that the application helps the student assessment process faster and more accurately. The teacher does not need to check the results of student answers one by one because the system automatically checks them. Pintar Apps as the student assessment application are beneficial for teachers in managing assessment activities in class. Furthermore, Pintar Apps even helps teachers administer the students who have used this application, and there is a list of them for all activities when using this application.

Abstract

The adjective that can be modified by degree words or degree adverbs is gradable adjectives. Gradable can also happen to adjectives participial, but not all of them. The adjective phrase has three main functions: attributive adjectives (modified before or after nouns), subject complement (complement subject NPs), and object complement (complement of the object of a clause. This paper focuses on identifying adjective phrase structure and its functions, exploring the categories which are modified, and determining the gradable within the adjective phrase. This paper aims to discover phrases, identify the adjective phrase, and analyze it in the tree diagram. It applied qualitative descriptive method to analyze, and documentation technique to collect the data. The data were obtained from the newspaper of ‘The Jakarta Post’ Vol. 37 No. 086 on Saturday, August 10th, 2019. The result found that pre-modifier (degree words and degree adverbs) + Adjective is the most frequent gradable adjective occurred in the texts, and then it is followed by an adjective (head), double adjectives, and pre-modifier (determiners) + adjectives.

Abstract

This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of visual language on building and sustaining a strong brand in the mini-market industry. Qualitative research has shown that visual language can have a powerful impact on consumer behavior and purchasing decisions. For example, the choice of colors, images, and symbols can evoke specific emotions and associations, influencing how consumers perceive and interact with the brand. This, in turn can impact brand loyalty, as consumers are more likely to return to brands that they perceive as being trustworthy and consistent. The use of visual language in branding is particularly important for mini markets, as these businesses compete in a crowded and highly competitive industry. By using visual language to create a strong brand image and establish brand associations, mini-markets can differentiate themselves from competitors, build a loyal customer base, and establish a strong reputation in the marketplace.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a genre-based and systemic functional linguistic (SFL) analysis of academic writing in higher education, with a focus on linguistic features and genre conventions in student essays. The research method used in this study is qualitative research. Specifically, the study uses a case study research design, where the focus is on a single limited case (in this case, student essays in academic writing in higher education). The research method involves collecting and analyzing data through a systematic and detailed examination of the linguistic features and genre conventions of student essays focus on how the students build the coherence and cohesion in academic writing. This research uses a genre-based approach to investigate how students use language to achieve communication goals in academic writing. The study utilizes corpus data from student essays to explore patterns and structures of academic discourse in various genres, as well as to identify linguistic features and coherence and cohesion that distinguish each genre and the researcher implemented interview to the students with six question related to the main research. The results of the study indicated that academic writing in higher education was characterized by a number of typical linguistic features in each genre, which were reflect different conventions and expectations in various academic genres. This study contributes to our understanding of how students use language to convey their ideas and arguments in various academic genres, as well as providing insights into the linguistic features and coherence and cohesion of writing that are important for successful academic writing in higher education. Abstract

Tenses are a crucial element in the English language. In writing or saying a sentence in English, people should consider what kind of tenses will be used. This study aims to find out what kind of errors are made by eleventh-grade students in writing a short story. The instrument used for the research is the writing test. This qualitative descriptive study involves thirty-one Senior High School students. To know the error made by the students, the researcher used a written test and then analyzed it qualitatively. There are one hundred twenty-eight errors made by the students and it is found seven omission types of error, sixteen errors for addition types, a hundred errors made in misformation, and five errors in misordering. It can be concluded that the students mostly made an error in the misformation type and the students have a low awareness of using verbs in the simple past tense while writing a short story.
