Abstract

Being a mother is the most exclusive experience that only women experience. For centuries, women were forced to accept the dogma that motherhood is a wonderful experience. Silvia Plath, one of the female poets who dared to express her original experience of being a mother without having to follow the language of patriarchal literature. The Gynocritic approach is applied because it places the female voice as the single most original voice for the experience of motherhood without patriarchal interference. Several selected poems at the end of life from Silvia Plath were used as a source of research data. Research findings show that Plath had considerable difficulty in adapting to being a mother. Whatever experience Plath has, or any mother, is an exclusive wealth that should only be owned and shared by women.

Abstract

This article depicts John’s attitude in treating his wife’s nervous depression in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper.” The treatment is supposed to help the wife get better. Yet, she ends up with a severe mental breakdown. The researchers argue that John’s attitude towards his sickly wife is what is called antagonistic kindness. This study employed the qualitative descriptive method through the perspective of feminist literary criticism. Since the narrator is the wife, the data were taken from the wife’s accounts of John’s acts and speeches towards her during the special treatment in the rented mansion. The wife’s thoughts on John also serve as the essential data to show how manipulative and dictating John is. The research indicates that John’s attitude embodies antagonistic kindness manifested in two major cruel-kindness actions or decisions, including psychological manipulation and dictation towards his wife. John keeps saying that all the treatment is for the wife’s sake, yet, he says such a thing to make the wife feel guilty for being a burden. Moreover, John has his wife’s daily activities scheduled, preventing her from doing anything out of his control. He never listens to what his wife wants or feels, thus worsening the wife’s psychological condition. The researchers further argue that John exhibits the so-called antagonistic kindness to maintain his reputation as a physician of high standing and keep dominating his wife as his property. The findings thus might help the readers be aware of any forms of kindness that antagonize and manipulate them psychologically.

Abstract

There are numerous fairy tales in the European tradition, and especially in the Grimms’ collection, that employ numerous archetypal themes, characters and motifs. This is true of the popular story, Hansel and Gretel. The examination of archetypes can be a laborious task given their rich psychological and cultural significance and their widespread use among seemingly distinct civilizations and genres. Accordingly, this study analyses the use of archetypes in the Grimms’ collection - through the example of Hansel and Gretel - to explore their full significance as these archetypes could potentially be a reason behind the enduring popularity of this story and the collection in general. The methodology of this study is based on the archetypal stages of the hero’s journey or quest as elaborated by Joseph Campbell in his seminal work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. This study has concluded that Hansel and Gretel skilfully employ numerous archetypal elements such as the evil women, order versus chaos, thresholds and helpers, and the trickster and the witch within the archetypal framework of a hero's journey to allow its protagonists to achieve psychological and moral maturity and material rewards. Through its few pages, Hansel and Gretel offers readers rich moral lessons about courage, regression, shrewdness, loyalty, evil, compassion and destiny through the use of the archetypal journey and its various elements. Abstract

Film is not merely a medium to entertain but also a reflection of society's values and conditions. This research deals with the portrayal of feminism in the film of Enola Holmes in the era of 19th century through its main character of the film ‘Enola’. It uses the qualitative method by employing the theory of semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce, which categorizes signs into three related parts, namely representamen, object, and interpretant. The data was taken by identifying and interpreting the signs through the scenes of the films, including icon, index, and symbol. The findings show that the film represents the feminist values through the character of Enola, such as independent, intellectual, showing freedom of choice, gender equality, and right to privacy. The character challenged the social norms in the 19th century, which still positioned women as inferior social beings and were oppressed by the patriarchal system. The film also brings relevant messages as it also indirectly criticizes the present women issues through the historical lens.

Abstract

This research raises the deconstruction of patriarchal power over women, social, race and education in the novels. The researcher examines this matter with the aims of uncovering and describing gender issues in this study based on the existence of women who feel oppressed trying to fight for their rights. In this study, the researcher compares the same situation between the two main characters in these two novels which is described using a qualitative descriptive method. The data sources in this research are the novels Bekisar Merah and The Color Purple. The data were obtained by reading, taking notes, and coded each sentence related to the research data. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the Feminist Intersectional theory to examine in depth the oppression of women from all aspects. The results of this study indicate that there is discrimination experienced by the two main characters in the novel, discrimination in terms of gender, family, society, race and education. Marginalization is also felt by these two characters due to differences in Gender, Race, and Family backgrounds that give rise to marginalization, the existence of dominance from the other party towards one of the sexes can be marginalized, in addition, the injustice has to do with the subordination, stereotypes, and violence experienced by the female characters in the novel. However, the form of gender equality in this case is the need for mutual respect between men and women, women as equal partners of men are more precisely as mentors and equal partners.

Abstract

Literary reception is a literary genre that examines literary texts by considering the reader as the giver of the welcome or response. Researchers choose to analyze literary receptions in Shakespeare's plays, namely "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" as an interesting source of data to be studied and analyzed more deeply because of the difficulty of readers in responding to a literary work. This study aims to determine the reader's response to the two plays by Shakespeare. The data source of this research is the play script of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. This study uses Iser’s Reception theory with instruments in the form of documentation and observation studies because this research is reviewed by noting and marking the parts that are considered important and useful for the reader. Based on the results of this study, it is clear that there are reader responses in Shakespeare's plays. Then the results of the research are in the form of a questionnaire containing nine questions with excellent answers or responses from readers in engaging the two plays by Shakespeare.
