Abstract

The learning process in high schools in West Papua tends to focus on students? cognitive enhancement and ignore the aspect skill. School is the frontline to develop students? skills. Metacognitive and process skills are the two skills needed by the students, and both should be trained and developed. These two skills help students to implement an investigation process in which the investigation process can be well utilized using inquiry-based learning. This study aims to find out the differences in metacognitive and process skills between students treated with inquiry-based learning and those who are taught using conventional learning. This experimental study was carried out at Grade X of senior high school students of SMA Negeri 1 Manokwari. The result reveals a significant metacognitive skill of 0.000 < ? 0.05, and science process skill of 0.001 < ? 0.05 of students who were taught using the inquiry-based learning more than those who were taught using the conventional learning. It can be concluded that there is a significant improvement in students? metacognitive and process skills for those who are taught using inquiry-based learning compared to those who are taught using conventional learning. Therefore, inquiry-based learning has the potential to appropriately train students? metacognitive and science process skill.

Abstract

This paper summarizes some observations and reflections on how cultural differences bedeviled my interactions with my students in Universidad de Lima, Peru. Culture is not an abstract force that floats around in space and settles upon us—though given the seemingly subliminal ways it influences us, it can feel like a disembodied, ubiquitous entity. In fact, culture is mediated through a social structure. In general, culture refers to the ways in which different groups of people organize their daily lives within national or ethnic groups, urban neighborhoods, companies and professions, and other settings. Culture includes what people actually do and what they believe. Culture influences greatly how we see the world, how we try to understand it and how we communicate with each other. Therefore, culture determines, to a great extent, learning and teaching styles. When we compare cultures we should not look for differences that make us better or worse than each other. No culture is better than another and no communication style is intrinsically wrong. My teaching and communication styles are deeply rooted in the way I have been socialized and a year of teaching at college reminded me that my students' communication and learning styles were different from mine. Perhaps the most important lesson I learned is that I must adapt to this new environment and change the way I communicate if I wish to be an effective teacher.

Abstract

“Galak sireutôh, yö siribé” is a popular saying in Aceh, referred to the person who is anxious to do what he wants to. This study investigated the student teachers’ anxiety felt when using English orally during their learning. Using the adapted questionnaires from Young’s (1990), that has been adapted by Occhipinti (2009), it involved 46 students undertaking English Speaking in a higher education in Lhokseumawe, Aceh. The results show that the majority of the students like English very much; however, they spent little time for using it orally, ranging from 1 to 8 hours per week. Most of them also affirmed that their English speaking ability is bad. It was also found that most of the students were highly anxious when speaking English with high self-exposure, but less anxious when engaging in collaborative activities and when given enough time to prepare what they talk. Yet, several students seem to have trait anxiety as they are highly anxious in most learning activities. Most were highly anxious for speaking English individually. This is likely influenced by their contextual, social and cultural factors, such as people in Aceh are known as communal rather than individualistic society.

Abstract

Spirit of gender equalities is currently stretching amid the strong patriarchal system in North Padang Lawas District North Sumatera. In terms of education, women get the same rights as men, even in some villages, more women go to school/college than men. There is a growing slogan that is "anak do boru, boru do anak" (boys and girls are the same). Women have the freedom to choose their own spouse and are not bound to the custom of "manyunduti". However, in the economic field, wives work in the fields and tore rubber to support the family's economy besides they have to do all the household works. Based on the gender perspective, this is a form of gender injustice, the namely double burden. Another form of inequality is in terms of inheritance, in which they get little part even in the form of giving (pangalehenan/ olongate). This is a form of marginalization experienced by women in North Padang Lawas District North Sumatera.
