Abstract

This study intended to figure out the level and the dominant motivation in learning English for sixth-semester students majoring in the Mathematics Education Program of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. This was viewed from three dimensions (Ideal L2 Self, Ought-to L2 Self, and L2 Learning Experience) of the L2 Motivational Self System framework of Dörnyei (2005, 2009). A quantitative research approach was employed through a survey study design to achieve the aim of the study. A total of 27 close-ended questionnaire items with a 5-point Likert Scale was administered to 79 participants. The main findings revealed that the motivation level of students held a moderate rate ( 3.53, SD = .870). Further description, 70% of students had a moderate level, and 30% reached a high level. Additionally, it found that the students were dominantly motivated by the L2 Learning Experience (= 3.67, SD = .756). It indicated that the motivation came from learning experiences and situations around students. While the Ideal L2 Self (= 3.63, SD = .878) was ranked in the second position, and Ought-to L2 Self (= 3.29, SD = .977) followed in the third position. Based on the research findings, some implications were recommended to be employed by EFL lecturers in enhancing students’ motivation, along with some directions for future researches in the area of motivational studies.

In this study, the researcher wanted to analyze the effect of learning media using animated videos in teaching English to young students, especially vocabulary mastery. From the calculation using SPSS 16.0, data were obtained based on descriptive statistics, namely, the average pretest was 53.750 and the posttest average was 73.375. This indicates an increase in the average value from pretest to posttest. In addition, the pretest score shows a minimum score of 45 students and a maximum score of 72.5 students. and experienced an increase in the posttest score, namely the student's minimum score of 65.0 and the maximum student's score of 87.5. The hypothesis testing using paired sample test showed that the significance value is lower than the level of significance (0.000 < 0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using animated videos

Abstract

This paper analyzes O.A Bushnell’s the Return of Lono from postcolonial perspective, focusing on the ambivalence of colonial discourse and the resulting contradiction which ultimately undermine Western claim of superiority. This novel dramatizes the arrival of Captain Cook’s expedition on the Hawai’ian isles from the first-person perspective of Jonathan Forrest as he reminiscences of their prior expedition. The Westerners’ view of an idealized and imagined Hawai’i constructs Hawai’i as a space which is exotic and primitive while simultaneously promotes the idea of beauty and welcoming. While previously abiding on the Western paradigm which denigrates the natives as animalistic and savage Others, Forrest’s perspective unsettles this dominant thought and contextualizes the resulting ambivalence within colonial discourse. This paper employs the concept of contact zone as stated by Pratt and also the theory of colonial discourse and ambivalence as is proposed by Ashcroft et al. The finding concurs that every exertion of colonial thought will result in resistance as by nature, the colonial discourse itself is intertwined with ambivalence.
