Abstract

Sufism is often understood as an approach to cleansing one's soul (tazkiyat al-nafs). Its infusion to human resource management is severely underutilised. This article aims to describe the managerial experience and services of a Sufism-based institution, namely the Faculty of Tarbiyya and Teacher Training UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri, Purwokerto. The faculty has implemented Sufism-based management to improve its employee performance in the industrial revolution 4.0. This paper is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data are collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Twelve key informants comprising officials, lecturers, administrative staff, and students, were invited. The data were then analysed by employing Smith's model. The finding showed that spiritually clean and healthy officials could stimulate wiser organisational behaviour, stimulate bright ideas (innovations), and shape a stronger desire to follow up on problems. This Sufism-based management supports the improvement of the service quality of the institution internally, externally, and eternally.Contribution: This study contributes to the literature on Sufism-based management in the sense of providing practical implementation of takhallī, taḥallī, and tajallī in management

Abstract

Sufism has been trailed by different criticisms for a long period. Different Muslim communities across the Muslim world have experienced anti-Sufism drives but launched in Nigeria in the seventies as it was inaugurated and coordinated by Shaykh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, who acted under the guise and influence of Wahhābiyya-Salafiyya. As a result, Sufis across communities started responding by either preaching or writing. Sufi scholars in Ilorin, a border community between the North and South, were among the early responders to anti-Sufism who took to writing. Therefore, this paper is a critical analysis of the contents of Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, written as a response to anti-Sufi waves in the city. An exegetical method of research was adopted to determine the appropriateness of the Sufi scholars to the anti-Sufism campaign in the metropolis. The findings revealed that most of the Salafiyya’s claims are unfounded and lack the proof to establish their genuineness, while the responses of the Sufi are not only appropriate but are also laced with evidence from the Qur’an, Ḥadīth, and submissions of different scholars, some of whom were Salafiyya scholars. The book is therefore recommended for the defence of Sufism in contemporary times.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the efforts to tackle the anti-Sufism movement initiated by Sufis scholars in Ilorin Nigeria, by writing a book entitled Rafḍ al-Shubuhāt, as a counter-opinion.

Abstract

The esoteric aspect of Islam, namely sufism, can provide essential values in influencing people's views and attitudes in their lives that, in turn, motivate them to achieve their goals in life as individuals and as a collective society. This study aims to analyse sufism as part of Islamic teachings, emphasising aspects of social morality (equality, compassion, mutual help, tolerance, ukhuwwah or brotherhood) initiated by M. Amin Syukur. This study applies a qualitative method using a content analysis approach. The results discovered that M. Amin Syukur promotes social sufism, i.e., sufism that concerns social life. Such sufism has characteristics, namely humane, empirical, and functional. M. Amin Syukur's Sufistic idea is rich in human values for creating social order and good community relations.Contribution: This study provides a new understanding that the function of sufism in society can be measured by its role, i.e. its contribution to society. Those who perform spiritual journey (sālik) must be active in all aspects of life, such as economy, politics, and society. Such Sufism by M. Amin Syukur is called social sufism.

Abstract

This paper examines how resilience religiosity using the tazkiyat al-nafs technique is carried out by economic actors from the elements of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) facing a post-pandemic recession. In-depth interviews were conducted with 27 MSME actors. The findings reveal that the pattern of tazkiyat al-nafs as a religiosity resilience used by economic actors from elements of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in facing the post-pandemic recession has succeeded in making it easier for them to adapt and create innovation and creativity to overcome post-pandemic recession conditions. On the other hand, MSME actors who are not in the tazkiyat al-nafs pattern have difficulty adjusting themselves in times of crisis.Contribution: The contribution of this paper is to provide a new understanding that maqāmāt can be used as a self-management technique when facing difficult times. In addition, maqāmāt can also be applied by ordinary people from Sufism teachings. Maqāmāt is a new way of religious resilience.

Abstract

Near-death experiences (NDEs) are closely related to emotional and spiritual dimensions, even though they are subjective. This study aims to reveal the mystical experiences of individuals suffering from COVID-19 after NDEs. This article is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. With purposive sampling, the data were collected from individuals suffering from COVID-19 who experienced NDEs but recovered. The data were then analysed with interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). This study reveals that when individuals experience NDEs, they no longer see and feel their physical body but their spirit or soul. They also have mystical experiences, such as being visited and communicating with specific religious figures and even the spirits of people who had died. After NDEs, a comprehensive reconstruction occurs regarding their personal beliefs and values regarding life and death, especially their relationship with God.Contribution: This study contributes to revealing the mystical experience of people after near-death experience (NDE). This study can be a recommendation, counselling, therapy and various psychological and religious interventions for individuals who experience NDE to accept their death more easily.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the process of determining the direction of the qibla by Sunan Kalijaga (one of Walisongo), employing a mystical and intuition (divine inspiration) method. This study is a qualitative field research using a socio-cultural approach. The research objects are the Baiturrahim Gambiran Pati Mosque and Demak Grand Mosque, Central Java. These mosques were built by Sunan Kalijaga. The results of this study revealed why the people of Gambiran Pati and Demak Grand Mosque still use the Sunan Kaljaga version of the qibla direction compared to the qibla direction using scientific technology. Some factors that influence include, first, the historical value factor of the Baiturrahim Mosque and Demak Grand Mosque as the guardian mosque and also the legendary figure of Sunan Kalijaga. Second, The socio-cultural characteristics of the Gambiran Pati and Demak communities are familiar with the mystical Kejawen.Contribution: This research contributes to understanding the method of determining the direction of the qibla by Sunan Kalijaga using mystical and intuitive approaches. It focuses on two historical mosques, the Baiturrahim Mosque in Gambiran Pati and the Grand Mosque of Demak, considering their historical, religious, and socio-cultural factors.

Abstract

The concept of Eco-Sufism, as an environmental ethic, believes that nature is the tajalliyāt and image of asmā and the attributes of God, all of which have theological and humanist sensibilities. The Qur’ān confirms this view, stating that all nature surrenders (aslama), submits to God’s laws (qāniṭūn), purifies (sabbaḥa), prostrates (yasjudu) and prays (ṣalāt). This library research focuses on analysing Tafsir Al-Mishbah by Muhammad Quraish Shihab as a primary source. The content analysis approach is used to uncover the mufassir’s views on Eco-Sufism in his tafsir. In contrast, the mauḍūʿi (thematic) method is applied to explore the concept of Eco-Sufism in the Qur’ān. The results showed that the religiosity of the universe expressed through paradigmatic dialectics and Eco-Sufism terms can be understood as a form of the universe’s submission to the system established by Allah the Almighty. The universe’s harmony, aptitude and discernment are clues to the Power and Oneness of the Creator. However, various natural activities such as tasbīḥ, sujūd, and ṣalāt are variously interpreted as majāzi or ḥaqīqī. However, the servitude of nature expressed through the activity of the universe is proof that nature also has a soul and spiritual dimension, just like humans.Contribution: This paper theoretically provides a holistic view of Sufism in building an ideal relationship among humans, God and the environment, which is expected to produce pragmatic results for the rescue and protection of nature and the environment.
