Abstract

English is an obligatory course for pharmacy students at Sari Mulia University. However, the syllabus utilized in the course has not yet been developed based on the students’ needs. This research aims to identify students’ target and learning needs to develop a syllabus of English for pharmacy. The research method employed in this research is Research & Development (R & D), consisting of the five steps mentioned analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE). This article explores the result of the first step which needs analysis. Various studies have developed syllabi for pharmacy students. Nevertheless, this study conducts a blended-learning-based syllabus. The data were collected using a questionnaire to obtain the students’ target and learning needs of English for pharmacy. The participants were 101 students of the pharmacy study program at Sari Mulia University who will take an English course in the upcoming semester. The sample was selected using a simple random technique. The finding indicated that the students’ most expected target in learning English is to improve their confidence in communication. Besides, they also expected to be able to master basic English skills, basic English grammar, and vocabulary related to pharmacy. The learning method that the students preferred was teacher-centered learning, where the teacher explains more than the students’ individual activity; however, they also expected to learn in group or pair activity. The usage of technology for blended learning that is expected by most of the students is watching videos; meanwhile, the least expected is learning via LMS.

Abstract

Teaching English to students with special needs has been a concern in Indonesia. However, there were still some limitations in the practice of teaching and learning in class. Thus, this research tried to portray the use of YouTube to improve the quality of English learning outside the classroom. This research attempted to depict YouTube's use to assist autonomous deaf learners in mastering English as a foreign language. This research utilized case study research and thematic data analyses. The subject of the research was one autonomous deaf English learner. The data collecting technique was a written interview through an online chat application. The first result of the research pointed out that there were four learning manners of the autonomous deaf learner in optimizing the English learning process through YouTube, namely using the caption feature, backward feature, comment section, and google translate to learn more about English. The second result revealed that the autonomous deaf English learner obtained three insights from the learning process through YouTube: grammar knowledge, vocabulary, and general knowledge, particularly about knitting. Finally, it may be concluded that the YouTube features that served captions, backward buttons, and comment sections became the paramount factors for supporting the learning autonomy of the deaf learner in mastering English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Online tutorial (Tuton) in Universitas Terbuka works asynchronously and can be used by students to support their learning activities anywhere, with a flexible time. Listening is one of the language skills that can be learned through this service. However, studying this subject through an asynchronous online platform is rather challenging. This research investigated students' perspectives on attending listening classes in an asynchronous Tuton mode. The study, which was carried out with a qualitative research approach, was conducted in the semester 2022.1. The number of participants was 21 students of the English Education Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training who enrolled in the Listening II (PBIS4220) course. Data was gathered through an open-ended online questionnaire distributed to students. The findings revealed that there are advantages, such as flexibility, interaction and participation, and assessment which can be considered as benefits of the use of asynchronous Tuton. Meanwhile, in terms of challenges, there are also materials and facilities, and feedback that needs to be taken into account. It can be concluded that there are two major findings regarding students’ perspectives of asynchronous online tutorials.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the response of teachers and students to the application of instruction-based metacognitive strategies using English songs for listening lessons. This study uses qualitative methods with research instruments, namely, interviews and was conducted in class 11 Social Sciences at SMAN 10 Tangerang. Four informants, one English teacher, and three grade 11 students were there. Based on the results of the study, it showed that the application of instruction-based metacognitive strategies using songs for listening had a good impact and received positive feedback according to the responses received by the researchers from the results of interviews with one English teacher and three grade 11 students at SMAN 10 Kota Tangerang. In addition, the responses from students, namely students said that the use of songs in listening activities can increase students' enthusiasm for learning, because it makes the listening learning atmosphere fun and not monotonous.

Abstract

Abstract Based on previous research, it was revealed that teachers in elementary schools face various obstacles in implementing Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). In this case, research on teachers’ beliefs is needed because everything they do in class can be reflected in their beliefs toward learning. In the meantime, there has been little research on this subject. Therefore, the aim of this research is to describe the beliefs of pre-service teachers (PST) at an elementary teacher education (ETE) study program on TEYL. This research is a case study. The data was gathered by giving an open questionnaire to PST at ETE of a private universities in Yogyakarta. 95 questionnaires were gathered and then analyzed with a symbolic interactive model that started with data condensation, data display, and data conclusion/verification. The results of the study showed that the PST at ETE has a positive perspective on TEYL because it is considered to support the future of the students. The PST at ETE also believes that students have different characteristics from adult learners in learning a foreign language. In addition, PST at ETE reveals that barriers in TEYL can be caused by factors from students, teachers, and school infrastructure. To optimize TEYL, PST at ETE considered the needs of training for elementary English teachers. The implication of this research is the need for a wider opportunity for PST at ETE to implement TEYL beliefs and theory, which have been learned through real teaching practicum in the classroom. For future researchers, they could examine the connectivity between the beliefs of PST at ETE on TEYL and its implementation in teaching and learning. Abstract

A gap of structure and meaning is often discovered between the conversations taking place in a movie and the displayed subtitle translation on the screen. Hence, this paper attempts to uncover types of cultural words as well as the translation procedures employed in The Dictator movie subtitle. Data sources were obtained from the paid streaming site, Netflix and scrutinized using a comparative descriptive approach. As many as 156 cultural words were discovered with nine procedures employed to translate those based on Newmark theories. Transference and literal translation were the two most frequent procedures applied in the subtitle. As a safe shortcut, the translator managed to employ transference which simply moves the text without any changes and literal translation to translate source texts according to its semantic features. As a result, the translation will be perfect in terms of faithfulness and acceptability yet weak in terms of naturalness, degree of informality, and fun.

Abstract

The most recent Indonesian curriculum, Kurikulum Merdeka (Freedom Curriculum), permits the resumption of English instruction, when this kind of learning will be available, and how feasible it is for schools. This study aims to clarify, from the perspectives of the concerned parties, the importance of English Language topics in the Indonesian Primary School (PS) curriculum, which is confronted with the linguistic and political context in Indonesia (primary school EFL teachers, school principals, teacher educators, and parents). Twelve participants provided in-depth interview data for this study (two school principals, four English teachers, and six teacher educators). In addition to qualitative data, 73 enthusiastic parents provided quantitative survey data to assist this study. The grounded theory examined the relevancy of the data by analysing them. The results indicate that the implementation of English courses in the Indonesian PS curriculum is responsive to parental and societal needs. The most important outcome of this study is imperative for the inclusion of English courses in the PS curriculum, taking into account the Junior High School English standards, the demand in the global society, and English as an investment for the future, and the sooner, the better. This study also suggests teacher education preparation to identify the suitability of EFL teachers in PS and improve ELT policy at the primary level.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate gender-based differences in the use of refusal strategies among 60 intermediate Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A qualitative approach was employed using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of 12 scenarios. The refusal taxonomy proposed by Beebe et al. (1990) was utilized to analyze the collected data. Findings showed that both male and female participants most frequently used indirect strategies, with females exhibiting a slightly greater range of indirect strategies. Additionally, the interlocutor's status was found to influence the choice of refusal strategies used by participants. However, no significant gender-based differences were observed. The results suggest that EFL learners tend to express refusal in a polite and considerate manner to avoid causing offense. Future studies should consider incorporating diverse data collection instruments to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of pragmatic competency.

Abstract

This study was a qualitative descriptive study. The participants of this study were three English teachers in the Senior High School category in the Sambas Border Area. Observation, interview, and documents were the instruments of this study. As a result, the researcher found that the participants in Sambas Border Area used WhatsApp to teach the students in the learning process. Other applications were used but it was as additional materials. The participants got problems due to network problems and low interactivity. In conclusion, it is recommended for the participants in this study apply Online Quizzes, Interactive Demos, and E-learning games to be spirit and creative in the teaching-learning process through E-learning since it is found that the participants in this study manage the classroom by applying online discussion to teach.

Abstract

Abstract: The use of technological tools to teach English skill, especially listening, has proved by previous study bring a positive effect towards students’ performance. Therefore, this study aimed to see the effectiveness of TED-Ed as video based media on students’ listening skill at SMAN 1 Singaraja, Bali. This research is an experimental study, in which applied quasi-experimental design with post-test only control-group design. The data were collected through post-test and later, the post-test result from both groups were compared and analyzed. The result showed that the mean score of experimental group was higher than the control group, 80,03 > 75,49. It indicates that the group taught with TED-Ed had better result than the other group who taught by using audio based media. Moreover, the sig. (2-tailed) value in the independent sample t-test was lower than 0,5, in which 0,003. It means that there was a significant effect towards the use of TED-Ed on student’s listening skill. Therefore, TED-Ed affects the students’ listening skill and makes the students perform better than the use of audio based media. Abstrak: Penggunaan teknologi dalam mengajar Bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam listening, telah dibuktikan oleh beberapa peneliti terdahulu dapat memberi dampak yang positif terhadap siswa. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat efek yang diberikan oleh TED-Ed sebagai media belajar berbasis video terhadap kemampuan listening siswa di SMAN 1 Singaraja, Bali. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan menggunakan desain kuasi eksperimental, post-test only control group design. Melalui post-test, data akan dikumpulkan dimana nantinya hasil post-test dari kedua grup akan dianalisis. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata grup eksperimen lebih besar dari grup control, yaitu 80,03 > 75,49. Ini menunjukkan bahwa grup yang diberikan perlakuan dengan TED-Ed memiliki hasil yang lebih baik dari grup yang diberi media berbasis audio. Selain itu, nilai sig. (2-tailed) dari independent sample t-test dibawah 0,5, yaitu 0,003. Berarti, terdapat efek yang signifikan dari penggunaan TED-Ed terhadap kemampuan listening siswa. Oleh karenanya, dapat dikatakan bahwa TED-Ed mempengaruhi kemampuan listening siswa dan membuat performa siswa lebih baik dibanding dengan penggunaan media berbasis audio.
