Abstract

This study offers an in-depth reading of Jasmine Warga’s Other Word for Home. Deploying descriptive analytical method and P.H. Collins’ concepts of Matrix of Domination and Self-Definition, this study aims to analyze the themes of women’s oppression and women’s empowerment in this book. Findings suggest that Jude and her mother, Syrian refugee women, are oppressed both in Syria and in the US due to their overlapping identity markers (gender, class, ethnicity, religion) in four domains of power (structural, disciplinary, hegemonic, interpersonal). In Syria, they are oppressed in structural domain by Syrian government. Meanwhile in the US, they are oppressed in disciplinary domain to preserve her subordination. Both Jude and Mama are also oppressed by the negative hegemonic ideologies that evolving around Syrian refugees, Muslim, and Arab women. At last, they are oppressed in interpersonal level in everyday life. However, by nurturing certain behaviors in Self-Definition (self-valuation, self-reliance, personal empowerment), they help fostering their empowerment to resist the intersecting oppressions. Penelitian ini menyajikan pembacaan komprehensif terhadap buku Other Words for Home karya Jasmine Warga. Menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis dan konsep Matriks Dominasi dan Definisi-Diri P.H. Collins, penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menganalisis tema penindasan terhadap perempuan dan pemberdayaan perempuan dalam buku ini. Ditemukan bahwa Jude dan ibunya tertindas baik di Suriah dan Amerika Serikat karna beragam penanda identitas menyilang mereka (jenis kelamin, kelas, etnisitas, agama) dalam empat wilayah kekuasaan (struktural, disipliner, hegemonik, antar individu). Di Suriah, Jude dan ibunya tertindas dalam wilayah struktural oleh pemerintah Suriah. Sementara di Amerika, mereka tertindas dalam wilayah disipliner agar mereka tetap menjadi seorang bawahan. Jude dan ibunya juga tertindas oleh ideologi hegemonik negatif mengenai pengungsi Suriah, Muslim, dan perempuan Arab. Terakhir, mereka juga tertindas dalam wilayah antar individu dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Meski begitu, sikap-sikap dalam Definisi-Diri (penghargaan diri, kemandirian, pemberdayaan pribadi) mendukung pemberdayaan mereka dalam melawan penindasan menyilang.

Abstract

Hudson Prananjaya is a singer who has a unique performance that is able to sing in the colors of the voice of men and women like a couple who is a duet. One of the songs he once brought back was the Gethuk song. The purpose of this study is to examine how the performance of a Hudson Prananjaya in exploring the gethuk song so that it has the characteristics of other singers. The theory used in this research is the theory of performativity, Habitus. This study aims to describe how Hudson's performativity in gethuk songs. Data collection is done by (1) literature study, (2) observation, (3) interview, (3) documentation. The stages in analyzing data with (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) histography writing (4) conclusion. Clarification of the data was again carried out both to the subject of the study and to other informants. Hudson gained cultural insight in singing because he was accustomed to experimenting in singing. One of the songs that was brought back was Gethuk song. The visual aspect is shown by the concept of two face shows nuances of Javanese customs both makeup and clothes. The results of the transcription and analysis of musical aspects in the introduction section are marked with X sung using the basic tone of Fis Major by taking the first verse of the song yen ing tawang ono latitude. The introduction is sung in a free vocal style without a tempo called the recitative vocal style. Modulation to the Bes Major scale occurs when getting to the Gethuk song starts from the song intro until the song is finished. The gethuk song that Hudson reproduces back to part B (b1 '), (b2'). In the repetition section there is a dialogue technique in singing called unpicth vocal technique.

Abstract

Figurative language is a form of communication that creates a memorable impact on the listener through a certain context. To create meaningful impacts in communication, people use figurative language in songs. This paper aimed to explore the figurative language used in the ‘Tropico’ video, which consists of three songs, namely “Body Electric,” “Gods and Monsters,” and “Bel Air” and to examine the contextual meanings of the three songs. The data were collected from the lyrics of the three songs. The data were analyzed through a qualitative descriptive method. The results showed that the types of figurative language that were used in the three songs  were metaphors, similes, personifications, hyperboles, alliterations, metonymies, oxymorons, allusions, repetitions, symbols, imageries, and apostrophes. The use of figurative language in the songs is relatable to the theme of the whole short music video.

Abstract

This article is purposed to reveal alienation of man as reflected in the novel of John Grisham’s entitled Theodore Boone: the Activist. In this paper, alienation is described as the condition when man is separated from his surroundings. This matter occurs due to the replacement of concrete understanding into abstractification. In the novel, abstractification is narrated in the description of treating nature and land for profit orientation. As a result, the alienation of man is shown in his feeling of separation from essential values of humanity. By using the postmodernism approach for this research, the results show that an authority’s policy such as the project of infrastructure without considering the public interest, as told in the novel, will cause not only the damages of environment but also the destruction of the civilization. In this paper, alienation of man is classified into alienation from activity, self-alienation, and alienation from others. Those classifications in the novel are proven to bring human to dehumanization.

Abstract

The short story could be the media to teach something to the readers. “Two old cherry trees still in bloom” for example, is written by Saikaku. Through his work, Saikaku would like to show the readers the implementation of 4 identity-statuses. He brought the readers into critical reading to help them find the identity. To analyze the 4 identity status content in his short story, the coding analysis was used. By analyzing, it could be seen that 4 identity-status categories comprise identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. Each status has two codes like uncertainty and unknown in identity diffusion, admiration and sympathy in identity foreclosure, struggle and chasing in identity moratorium, and settle and completion in identity achievement. Through the analysis, Saikaku shows the readers that to harmonize oneself as an individual and community member, someone needs to develop his curiosity through implementing identity moratorium to satisfy his lacking of background knowledge. Moreover, developing a sense of love is very essential to keep someone digging something out sufficiently through identity foreclosure to reach the ultimate goal of life.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskribsi kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Teun A. Van Dijk untuk menganalisis teks dalam podcast Deddy Corbuzier yang sudah ditranskrip. Sumber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yakni podcast bersama Kak Seto dengan judul “Kita yang Bodoh atau Sekolah yang Bodoh?!” dengan durasi 47 menit 55 detik yang di unggah dalam channel youtube pada tanggal 4 April 2020. Pada podcast tersebut, membahas mengenai pendidikan di Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan elemen-elemen dalam wacana seperti struktur makro (tematik), superstruktur (pendahuluan, isi, penutup, dan simpulan), dan struktur mikro (latar, praanggapan, maksud, koherensi kondisional, metafora). Simpulan dari podcast ini adalah membahas mengenai sekolah yang masih menggunakan sistem pendidikan yang belum terbarui, Kak Seto selaku Ketua KPAI mendirikan Home Schooling bagi anak-anak yang kurang cocok dengan pendidikan formal maupun anak-anak yang tidak bisa mengenyam pendidikan, dan pernyataan-pernyataan Deddy mengenai sekolah dan kuliah menjadi bumbu yang khas dalam podcast tersebut.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research intends to untangle the particular issues related to Orientalism. East into Upper East by Ruth Praver Jabvala displays the conflicted culture which happens to Indians. The Characters tend to act as Upper Class in Western Manner. Jabvala illustrates the difficulties of being Indian who has to approach western culture then fall in term of Orientalism. Orientalism by Edward W. Said is used as a tool to analyze this book especially to find Latent and Manifest Orientalism. This research shows that conflicted culture which happens to the characters in Jabvala’s was effected by Post Colonialism. In short, Upper East was built by the colonist. This book describes the way Indian sees their culture as given by the West.Keywords: cultural identity, east, upper east, orientalism, and postcolonialism.

Abstract

Humor has been used as a tool against oppression for a long time. With the advent of digital technology, memes have a become popular object in social media, especially in Twitter platform. Meme is an images which are communicated through social media that make fun of bring to light a social or cultural issue. This research aims to explore a meme by ARMY and communication style that used through Twitter platform. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. This research was obtained the data by ARMY members on the direct message on Twitter. The result of this research showed that meme by ARMY members give a message which is implied, they use some of meme for entertain for themselves and they also support for their idol, BTS. In this meme, ARMY depicts an exaggerated expression of BTS members, where they are very fanatical about their idols, the communication style applied through memes also affects the response of their followers because these memes contain entertainment and always support BTS members. Therefore, virtual ethnography also can be a powerful methodology for understanding online social communities and subcultures, such as a popular and widespread medium for internet-based interactions

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada dua elemen penting dalam musik sampe’ yaitu bentuk estetik dalam penyajian dan bentuk estetik dalam lagu. Bentuk dan konsep estetik akan memberikan identitas sebuah aktualitas musik sehingga dapat dibedakan dari yang lainnya. Secara konseptual musik tradisional sampe’ memiliki dua bentuk, yaitu: 1) bentuk arsitektonik yang sifatnya intelektualistik atau absolut; 2) bentuk simbolik yang sifatnya instingtif atau relatif. Kedua bentuk tersebut dapat dicermati melalui sumber bunyi (instrumentasi), musikalitas, ekspresi musikal, dan tata penyajiannya. Selain itu konsep keindahan musik tradisional sampe’ dapat pula diamati secara ilmiah (science) yaitu menilai keindahan dengan perhitungan logis melalui standar-standar estetik yang telah ada dan melalui unsur filsafat tentang keindahan menyangkut berbagai wawasan keindahan yang dipersepsi oleh manusia. Melalui bentuk dan konsep estetik musik tersebut dapat membawa untuk mengenal lebih jauh dan membaca unsur penting dari kebudayaan masyarakat pemiliknya. Selanjutnya dengan memahami bentuk dan konsep estetik adalah awal yang baik dan akan menuntun seseorang yang ingin belajar tentang musik tradisional sampe’. Metode pada penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekataan teori estetika yang dikemukaan oleh A.A. Made Djelantik dan Monroe Beardsley.Kata kunci : estetika, musik sampe’, dayak kenyah

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of commissive acts found in the movie entitled Onward as the data source. The utterances uttered by the characters in the movie were taken as the data of the research and classified them by using the theory of commissive acts proposed by Searle. This research is a descriptive qualitative research, as to describe the data in words and sentences. To collect the data, researchers conducted observational method and non-participatory technique. The researchers used the method of pragmatic identity to analyse the data and pragmatic competence – in equalizing technique to equalized the data based on the theory used. The research result showed that there were 17 utterances of commissive acts found in Onward movie. They were 2 data of promising, 4 data of threatening, 2 data of accepting, 6 data of refusing, and 2 data of offering. The act of refusal was the frequently used type of commissive acts since the character had the habit of not wanting to bother other people.
