Abstract

This study is about a syntactic analysis on sentences in the song lyrics of Josh Groban by using tree diagram theory. Thus, the aims of this study are (1) To find out the types of the phrases used in Josh Groban song lyrics (2) To find out the sentence patterns used in Josh Groban song lyrics. The object of this study is Josh Groban song lyrics which entitled “You Raise Me Up”. The method of this study is qualitative analysis. The technique of collecting the data is by using 3 steps. The 3 steps are: (1) preparing and organizing, (2) coding, and (3) representing the data. Finally, the findings of this study are as follows; (1) there are 3 types of phrases, they are 7 Noun Phrase (NP), 9 adverbial phrases (AP), and 9 verb phrases (VP). (2) There are 3 sentence patterns in Josh Groban song lyrics, they are; (1) S = N+VP (2) S1+Conj.+S2 (S1 = N+V, S2 = N+VP) (3) S1+Conj.+S2 (S1 = N+VP, S2 = N+VP)

Abstract

The study aims at analyzing the types of address terms used by all the characters in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them movie and revealing the factors that influence the use of address terms. Both employ the theory proposed by Wardhaugh (2006). Further, this study applies to qualitative design. The result of the study can be concluded as follows. The types of address terms used in the movie are first name, title plus last name, title alone, last name, pet name, and kinship terms. The use of address terms first name was commonly used to show intimacy between the speakers. There are various factors influencing the use of address terms. They are particular occasion, social status, gender, age, family relationship, occupational hierarchy, transactional status (i.e., service encounter, or doctor-patient relationship), race, and degree of intimacy. The social status or rank of others apparently the common factor influencing the use of address terms. It is because the characters are not familiar with each other even though they know each other. Some characters also show the clear differences between the superior and the inferior. Then, the circumstances and the social background of the characters determine the use of appropriate address terms.

Abstract

Fokus penelitian ini adalah analisis terhadap unsur stile yang meliputi unsur bunyi, leksikal, dan majas dalam tiga lirik lagu grup musik Fourtwnty. Metode yang dipilih adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan langkah kerja menganalisis unsur-unsur stile untuk menemukan stile dominan. Dari stile dominan tersebut akan disimpulkan stile khas gaya penciptaan lirik lagu grup musuk Fourtwnty. Tujuan akhir penlitian ini adalah menyimpulkan bagaimana stile khas tersebut berfungsi sebagai sarana capaian estetis. Hasil penelitian menemukan stile dominan grup musik Fourtwnty adalah dominasi manipulasi bunyi dalam bentuk asonansi dan mesodiplosis; kosa kata yang dipilih sederhana namun mampu merepresentasikan keresahan kehidupan kaum urban di era postmodernisme, penyampaian pesan didominasi oleh majas sehingga membuat lagu menjadi multitafsir dan tidak membosankan karena tidak sebatas menyampaikan doktrin atau dogma. Kemungkinan penafsiran melalui penggunaan simile, metafora dan personifikasi juga menjadikan karya ini selalu segar dan kontemplatif karena tidak menggurui atau terkesan menceramahi. Kemunculan “aku” dan “ku” di semua sampel lagu juga menciptakan efek estetis yang melahirkan suasana eksistensialis dimana pembaca atau pendengar merasa turut mengalami dan merasakan kegelisahan yang disampaikan.

Abstract

Critical thinking should be encouraged in English as a Foreign Language learning based on a scientific approach. The present study reviews arguments, opinions, and previous studies on the implementation of scientific approaches in English as a Foreign Language classes for improving student's critical thinking. The review reveals that critical thinking skills cover three aspects: quick thinking, creative thinking, and analytical thinking. To improve the students’ critical thinking, teachers play a crucial role in the learning process using innovative learning models based on scientific approaches. Three learning models considered most useful for developing students' critical thinking are discovery learning, problem-based learning, and project-based learning. Through discovery learning, students learn new things by solving the problem and exploring. In problem-based learning, a contextual problem is given at the beginning of the lesson, not the content being discussed. The third, project-based learning, students learn by doing and being enthusiastic with all processes of learning. Since critical thinking skills are crucial for solving language learning problems and beyond, language learning should integrate linguistic contents with the cognitive skills and dispositions, dimensions of critical thinking.

Abstract

The long-term goal of this research is Logistic English which is needed by maritime students, especially the port management study program, due to they have to master it, especially ESP (English for Special Purpose) Logistics. In addition, many alumni work for foreign shipping companies. This inspires the writer to conduct this research. The study entitled "The Influence of Logistic English Proficiency Towards Working Ability of Maritime University Alumni" was to determine how much influence the Logistics English skills possessed by maritime college students in Semarang. The method used in this study, for the population is maritime school students in Semarang, Indonesia, while the sample is using purposive sampling. This type of research uses causality. Meanwhile, for the instrument testing is the instrument validity test and the reliability test. The data collection techniques used questionnaires, observation, literature study, interviews and documentation. Data processing techniques using editing, scoring and tabulation. The data analysis technique uses multiple regression analysis test and goodness of fit test. While to test the data requirements using the normality test, linearity test and classical assumption test. The main finding in this study is that there is a relationship or influence of “Logistic English Proficiency Towards Working Ability of Maritime University Alumni”. Conclusion There is an influence between AKPELNI, STIMART AMNI, PIP and POLIMARIN, where the result has positive influence.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to elucidate a comprehensive perspective on translanguaging practices in EFL classrooms in Indonesia by reviewing empirical literature published in scientific journals and/or proceedings focusing on four primary areas, which include: (1) research methodology, (2) advantages and disadvantages of translanguaging, (3) languages used when translanguaging, and (4) perceptions and attitudes toward translanguaging. The findings indicate all of the studies under review were conducted through a qualitative approach with the instruments of observations, interviews, and questionnaire. Teachers and students have the benefit of translanguaging practices in EFL classrooms, yet it should be taken into account that L1 should be adopted judiciously. They translanguage using English, Indonesian, and local languages and even foreign languages other than English. They have voiced their agreement to the implementation of translanguaging as pedagogy since it positively impacts EFL teaching and learning. However, few teachers have contrasting views about this voice. Suggestions for future research on translanguaging are also discussed.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengungkap ketidakadilan yang dialami tokoh perempuan dalam cerpen Gosip di Kereta Api dan Hujan dalam Telingga karya Deddy Arsya dengan menggunakan teori kritik sastra feminis. Metode yang digunakan dalam memecahkan permasalahan yaitu metode deskriptif analitik. Sebelumnya dideskripsikan terlebih dahulu data yang digunakan sebagai bahan kajian, kemudian dilakukan analisis. Adapun hasil pembahasan yang ditemukan pada kedua cerpen tersebut yaitu tokoh perempuan selalu dijadikan objek ketidakadilan oleh tokoh laki-laki, ketidakadilan yang dialami pada ranah keluarga antara suami dan istri. Ada beberapa bentuk ketidakadilan yang dialami tokoh perempuan, di antaranya: perempuan hanya dijadikan sebagai pembuat anak, tukang gosip, perjodohan, dan tubuhnya dianggap sebagai objek seksual, dan tokoh perempuan tidak melakukan perlawanan bahkan membenarkan streotipe itu.

Abstract

This research would analyze the postcoloniality of Erwin Clarkson Garret’s The Dyak Chief Ballad. This research using  the elements of poetry theory, poetry and history and postcolonial theory. The method of this research using structural approach and postcolonial analysis. This research analyze the elements of poetry, the translation into Bahasa Indonesia, the historical context of the poetry, and postcolonial aspect of the poetry is the elements. The result of this research are the identification of intrinsic elements of this ballad, the translation into Bahasa Indonesia, the historical context of this ballad that related to early first world war, and the representation of the native (the East) by the West.

Abstract

The family is the smallest domain in which patriarchal practices occur, and women become the subjugated object. On the other hand, the biopic film On the Basis of Sex, set in the 1950s, depicts a married couple who mutually support one another. This familism principle, in contrast to the patriarchal principle of the early twentieth century, distinguishes the Ginsburgs as a unique family. The research discussion progresses to how familism is maintained, which resulted in Ruth, the wife's, success in achieving her education and career with the support of her husband. In order to answer the research questions, familism and feminism theories are used. The findings show that the couple prioritizes family over self-interest because they value family interconnectedness; they believe family as source of emotional support; they want to maintain family honor; they want to obtain family benefit; and they want to fulfil family obligations. The idealism leads them to the practice of feminism, which takes place both in the domestic and public spheres. As a result, it was found that strong family bonds can be used to break the patriarchal tradition by implementing feminist practices.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis puisi-puisi terpilih dalam buku kumpulan puisi Anak “Pohon-Pohon Raksasa di Rimba Nusantara” Karya Korrie Layun Rampan berfokus bahwa terdapat indikasi pohon-pohon yang menjadi topik dalam kumpulan puisi tersebut dicitrakan sebagai objek, misalnya kayu ulin yang bisa dijadikan bahan bangunan dan sebagainya. Hal-hal seperti itu berulang di puisi-puisi yang lain, sehingga penelitian ini sangat penting dilakukan. Terdapat hipotesis bahwa penyair berpotensi mengajarkan tindakan eksploitasi terhadap pohon kepada anak-anak  melalui kumpulan puisi anak.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data, dalam penelitian ini berupa teks kata, kalimat, dan sumber data berupa 3 (tiga) puisi yang berjudul “Meranti Bunga”, “Manggeris”, dan “Ulin”. Tiga puisi tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori puisi, diksi, citra, dan sastra anak.Hasil penelitian mendeskripsikan bahwa objek yang menjadi topik dari ketiga puisi tertebut adalah representasi dari hutan. Bahkan bisa disebut pohon sebagai representasi alam. Sehingga menyebut nama pohon tertentu seperti meranti bunga, manggeris, dan ulin, hanyalah sebuah simbol untuk membicarakan situasi dan kondisi bagaimana eksploitasi hutan telah terjadi di alam hutan hujan tropis Kalimantan Timur.
