CaLLs (Journal of Culture, Arts, Literature, and Linguistics) published by Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Mulawarman and published in June and December. <![CDATA[The effect of a poem is deliberately designed by the poet to make it meaningful and emotionally attach the reader. Just like Television poem by Roald Dahl which employs the language features, puts them as foreground, and affects the readers in meaning making. The structure and figurative languages in the poem creates the tone that can raise people awareness of the bad impact of television for children growth and on the other hand gently reminds today’s parents about the goodness of reading books. This study gives empirical evidences of such impression by showing the poetic devices and the language features applied by the poet.]]>

<![CDATA[Penelitian ini membahas representasi kekuatan Uni Soviet dalam eksplorasi ruang angkasa pada masa Perang Dingin melalui kartu pos «Советская Космонавтикa» [Sovetskaja Kosmonavtika] yang dipublikasikan pada tahun 1972. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan bentuk-bentuk kekuatan Uni Soviet dalam eksplorasi ruang angkasa pada masa Perang Dingin melalui gambar yang ada pada kartu pos «Советская Космонавтикa» [Sovetskaja Kosmonavtika]. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi pustaka yang dipadukan dengan the circuit of circle milik Stuart Hall. Melalui the circuit of circle milik Stuart Hall ditemukan bentuk-bentuk kekuatan Uni Soviet dalam eksplorasi ruang angkasa dan pengembangan teknologi oleh ilmuwan Uni Soviet pada masa Perang Dingin. Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa kartu pos «Советская Космонавтикa» [Sovetskaja Kosmonavtika] merepresentasikan bentuk kekuatan Uni Soviet dalam eksplorasi dan pengembangan teknologi ruang angkasa serta terjadi pergeseran makna eksplorasi ruang angkasa yang merupakan bentuk pengembangan sains menjadi alat untuk menunjukkan kekuatan politik di ranah internasional dan penyebaran komunisme ke seluruh dunia.]]>

<![CDATA[This study deals with the portrayal of English gentleman in the 19th century as seen in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. The purpose of this study is to describe a portrait of the English gentlemen that are represented by the characters such as Pip, Herbert Pocket, Dumble, Mattew Pocket, Mr. Jaggers and Compeyson as illustrated by Dickens. This research uses descriptive qualitative method and sociology of literature theory by Diana Lawrenson and Alan Swingewood in analyzing the relationship between the portrayal of English gentelman and its social conditions in at the time. The results of this study shows that there are several categories of gentelman title that represented by the characters in the story, namely: Drummle is gentleman by birth (aristocrats), Pip is gentleman by wealth, Gentleman by education or the gentleman students include Pip, Herbert Pocket, and Dummle. The gentleman by profession represented by Mr. Matthew and Mr.Jaggers. While moral code ethics of the gentleman can detemine a man if he the true gentleman or fake / wicked gentleman. In fact the true gentleman in this story is Mr. Matthew while the fake gentleman is Compeyson.]]>

<![CDATA[One of the speech error phenomena is a slip of the tongue, which frequently occurs in pronunciation. Accordingly, the paper intended to address two questions. First, what are the types of the slip of the tongue found in BBC news anchors’ utterances? Second, what are the frequency effects that influence the slips of the tongue in the videos? Data were collected from YouTube videos of BBC news anchors in textual pronunciation, namely pronunciation in context. The analysis was conducted based on the types of slips of the tongue and frequency effects. Results showed that the three types of slips of the tongue occurring in the videos were anticipation, perseverations, and exchange. The four frequency effects identified in the videos were the lexical expectation effect, the speaking rate effect, the type effect, and the location similarity effect.]]>

<![CDATA[The era of technology and globalization triggers various new crimes like murder with various motives. The objectives of this research are to reveal the intrinsic elements of the novel and to describe the efforts of the main character to reveal the murder of the story. There are two kinds of data in this research: primary data and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. The secondary data function to support the primary data and add more information that is related to this novel. Data were gathered, classified, analyzed and interpreted by using several theories. The results of the research shows that the intrinsic elements are described based on theme, setting, character and characterization, plot and point of view. The efforts of the main character to reveal the murder are: (a) analyzing the report and interviewing the witnesses, (b) solving the problem on the investigation, (c) investigating the murder case secretly and (d) building the strategies to reveal the criminal]]>

<![CDATA[This study focuses on oral traditions that contain local wisdom. Mantra is an oral tradition that lives and develops in a society, especially in Banjar society. This study aims to discover the functions and values of the mantra that exist in the Banjar community. This research is a library research that uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research data were obtained through the book collection "Mantra Banjar". Data were collected through the observation stage: read, take notes and to add information, researchers also interviewed informants. Then the data were analyzed by stages; the data classification is in accordance with the spell function classification among the Banjar community. Then, proceed with classifying the valuescontained in the mantra performed by the Banjar community. The function of the Banjar mantra among the Banjar community is to educate, entertain, motivate and document (save). Meanwhile, the values of the Banjar mantra among the Banjar community contain elements of value between man and man, man and God, man and nature, and man and himself.]]>

<![CDATA[Learning style is one of the factors contributing to students’ success on second or foreign language learning. This present research attempted to identify various learning styles used in learning English by administering Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ ) for 121 EFL students at English literature study program. The result of descriptive analysis showed that the overall students’ preferred learning style was found to be auditory (M= 37.5, SD = 4.48). Based on gender differences, a majority of male students were auditory students ( M = 38.6, SD = 4.27) and most of the female students were observed to have tendency to be in the category of kinaesthetic students (M = 3.69, SD = .49). The individual learning style became the least frequent style used by the students ( M = 35.2, SD = 7.53). The findings contribute to the improvement of teaching practice quality. Educators are recommended to employ various teaching styles and design variety of activities that enable students to activate their own learning styles more effectively.Keywords: learning style, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire ( PLSPQ )]]>

<![CDATA[Critical period is the period in which a human being is very sensitive to environmental stimuli, usually it occurs from the very beginning humans were born until they are puberty. This critical period is closely related to humans’ language acquisition. However, if during this period humans did not get the stimulus to learn language well, then their ability to acquire the language would be difficult, or even fail. The purpose of this study was to prove whether there was a correlation between the critical period hypothesis initiated by Eric H. Lenneberg with humans' language acquisition. The research method used in this study was to compare 3 case samples that occurred in Genie, Victor, and Isabella. All of them experienced language delay at first, but after getting treatment they showed different results. Genie and Victor did not show significant language development, whereas in the case of Isabelle, her language acquisition showed very good results. The difference result of that experimental because of their age difference. Therefore, it can be said that there is a correlation between a critical period and one's language ability.]]>

<![CDATA[This study entitledDeconstruction of Leading Characters in ZootopiaMovie Script. This study discussed about Deconstruction of characters which aimed to deconstruct the opposition of major and minor characters in the movie script Zootopia, and also devalue the major and minor characters to be the new hierarchy. This research is based on the Deconstruction theory proposed by Jacques Derrida (Rodalphe Gasche : 1988), which systematize the steps in doing deconstruction analysis from the identifying the opposition hierarchy in the text that systematically privileged, then change or reverse that hierarchy, and the last was introduced a new term or idea, which apparently cannot be included in the page of old hierarchy category. The method used in this study was the descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research is uncovering the deeply complex foundation that is difficult to make sense, because there is no general truth or the permanent personality of each character, there will be the other side of character that can produced a new hierarchy. ]]>

<![CDATA[ABSTRAK Salah satu wujud kearifan lokal yang perlu dipertahankan keberadaannyaadalah cerita rakyat. Karena itu, cerita rakyat yang berbasis kearifan lokal setempat perlu dikenalkan oleh peserta didik sejak dini. Sementara yang terjadi di lapangan, banyak sekolah belum menggunakan cerita rakyat berbasis kearifan lokal menjadi bahan ajar pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia di sekolah. Hal ini lah yang menjadi permasalahan dalam penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan buku cerita rakyat berbasis kearifan lokal Suku Dayak Randuk serta menguji kelayakan dan kemenarikannya. Peneliti ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan. Prosedur pengembangan menggunakan tujuh tahapan dari sepuluh tahapan menurut Sugiyono, yaitu sampai pada tahap revisi produk. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa buku cerita rakyat yang dikembangkan sangat layak dan sangat menarik untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia di sekolah.Kata Kunci: pengembangan buku, cerita rakyat, kearifan lokal, Suku Dayak Randuk ]]>
