Abstract

Availability of pepper seeds continuously, good quality, and free from stem rot disease is still limited at the farmer level. This study aims to determine the composition of the planting medium and the best concentration of organic fertilizers in spurring pepper seeds' growth. The study was compiled using a two-factor factorial design based on a randomized block design. The first factor is the media's composition for planting sand, compost, and soil in 5 levels, namely 1:0:1, 1:1:0, 1:1:1, 1:2:1, and 2:1:1. The second factor is applying liquid organic fertilizer (POC), made from forage. It consists of three levels of concentration, namely POC 10 ml, 20 ml, and without POC (control). Fifteen treatment combinations were repeated three times. The results showed that the combination of POC and the composition of the planting medium could stimulate pepper seedlings' growth. POC 20 ml/liter and the composition of the media of sand + compost + soil 1:1:0 and 1:1:1 resulted in the best shoot lengths, namely 13.91 cm and 13.23 cm, respectively. The planting medium of sand + compost + soil with a composition of 1:1:1 was able to spur the emergence time of pepper cuttings faster, namely 19.13 days after planting, and the number of leaves was higher, namely 5.40.

Abstract

The reproductive process's success is mostly determined by the conditions of the male and female who are married. Male quality is determined by testicular size, libido, and, most importantly, semen quality. One of the factors that determine testicular size and libido is nutrition. Moringa is a type of vegetable that has excellent nutritional content. This study aimed to determine the effect of Moringa leaves on scrotum circumference and libido of Bali cattle. This study used 12 male Bali cows with a bodyweight of 150-200 kg aged 2-4 years, divided into two treatments: cows without Moringa leaves and cows given Moringa leaves. Moringa leaves (room dried) were given as much as 0.1% of body weight in the morning for 13 weeks. Data were collected once a week. Furthermore, the data obtained were analyzed using SPSS with the T-Student Independent Sample test. The results showed that cows given Moringa leaves were not significantly different from cows that were not given Moringa leaves (control treatment) in the initial seven periods of the study (P> 0.05). Still, after that period (weeks 8-13), there was a significant effect. very significant (P <0.01). In contrast to the libido, the scrotal circumference size of Bali Cows given Moringa leaves was significantly different from the control treatment (P <0.01). This means that Moringa leaf supplementation can increase the scrotal circumference and libido at the 8th week of Moringa leaf supplementation.

Abstract

Liquid waste is one of the negative impacts of the oil palm processing industry, which can disrupt aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to describe the morphometric conditions of the digestion system of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to palm oil wastewater. The study was conducted from April to July 2020. Tilapia measuring 4-7 cm in length with an average weight of 3-8 grams with 160 fish per treatment. The stages of the research included raising fish, giving oil palm liquid waste, and observing the morphometric digestion system. Fish were exposed to oil palm wastewater with concentrations of 0 mL.L-1, 47 mL.L-1, 70.4 mL.L-1, and 94 mL.L-1 for 64 days. The analysis was carried out on the Gastro Somatic Index (GaSI), Intestine Somatic Index (ISI), Relative Gut Lengths (RGL), Relative Intestine Lengths (RIL), and Hepato Somatic Index (HSI). The results showed that palm oil wastewater could affect the morphometric digestion of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Palm oil wastewater with a concentration of 94 mL.L-1 also affected the GAS of 2.40%, the ISI of 5.49%, and RIL of 549.11%. In the treatment, the concentration of oil palm liquid waste was 70.4 mL. L-1 affected the HSI by 1.70%. However, exposure to palm oil wastewater does not affect RGL. The content of palm oil liquid waste can disrupt the metabolism of the stomach, intestinal, and liver cells. The high concentration of waste can damage the lining of the stomach and intestines, resulting in decreased appetite.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of dragon fruit peel extract on the motility and abnormalities of native chicken spermatozoa. The study was arranged experimentally using a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments and 3 replications. Before treatment, 12 native chicken were randomly divided into groups and adapted for 10 days with commercial feed and drinking water. The treatments were given orally for 8 weeks and consisted of P0 (control), P1 (1 ml dragon fruit peel extract), P2 (3 ml dragon fruit peel extract), and P3 (5 ml dragon fruit peel extract). Cement storage is carried out by the sequencing method. The quality of the collected sperm is tested in the laboratory. The parameters measured were microscopic sperm quality, namely sperm motility, and abnormalities. The results showed that dragon fruit peel extract had a significant effect on spermatozoa motility by increasing the percentage of motility but had no effect on spermatozoa abnormalities. Provision supplement of 5 ml dragon fruit peel extract gave the best results in increasing spermatozoa motility in native chickens.

Abstract

Soil fungi, which produce hormones that occupy the rhizosphere ecosystem, have roles as agents to promote plant growth. This study aims to isolate rhizosphere fungi in mahogany in the Experiment Forest of Universitas Hasanuddin, and identify the fungal isolates obtained based on morphological characters. The research began with rhizosphere soil sampling, isolation, and identification based on morphological characters. The rhizosphere microbial isolation on mahogany stands in the Unhas Educational Forest obtained 18 fungal isolates with varied morphological characteristics, both in colony color and elevation. Microscopic observations resulted in 4 genera, namely Rhizopus, Gliocladium, Trichoderma, and Aspergillus. The results showed that there were superior fungi isolates that could produce growth hormones and could be applied to forest plant seeds. The formula with these select fungi can give the seeds optimal growth in forest plant seeds.

Abstract

Dark Septate Endophyte (DSE) is a fungus in symbiosis with the host plant and is characterized by the presence of dark pigment, insulated hyphae, and microscleretia. The effect of DSE fungi on the host plant is specific according to the fungal strain, host plant species, and environmental conditions. DSE fungi can colonize host plant roots intra and extracellularly as well as ectendomycorrhiza. In DSE colonization, sometimes it fails to form a dense mantle and hartig net, but instead, it forms melanin microscleretia. The symbiosis between DSE fungi and suitable host plants can increase plant growth, uptake of N and P elements, resistance to drought, extreme temperatures, and protect plants from plant-disturbing organisms. The increase in the uptake of N and P elements was caused by the ability of DSE fungi to produce proteolytic enzymes and phosphatases that can mineralize organic N and P so that they become available to plants. Increased resistance to drought and extreme temperatures is thought to be due to melanin hyphae which can help absorb water from the soil and produce antioxidants and protection against free radicals. In addition, some strains of DSE fungi also produce chlorine to protect plants from plant-disturbing organisms.
