Abstract

The media significantly shapes public opinion and influences societal perceptions of diverse local and worldwide issues. Consequently, news coverage has the potential to shape public discourse significantly. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze patterns in the reporting of Yahya Sinwar's death by CNN and Al Jazeera, utilizing Theo Van Leeuwen's (2008) framework for critical discourse analysis.Through the application of Van Leeuwen's theory, the study examines how Western and Middle Eastern media providers frame Sinwar's death and represent the social actors involved in his assassination. Van Leeuwen's framework categorizes the representation of social actors into two primary strategies: exclusion, encompassing suppression and backgrounding, and inclusion, which includes Activation/Passivation, Genericization/Specification, Assimilation, Association, Indetermination, Functionalization/Identification, and Personalization/Impersonalization. The analysis highlights distinct differences in the framing strategies of the two media providers. CNN and Jazeera differ in their framing strategies, with CNN emphasizing individual actions and a direct narrative style, while Jazeera uses a context-driven approach, emphasizing collective experiences and connecting individual events to larger systemic issues

Abstract

This research describes the contribution of linguistics in forensic linguistics, especially in a legal context. This research is library research. The analysis shows that forensic linguistics applies language analysis and linguistic theories in linguistic events involved in the legal process, including products, interactions in the judicial process, and interactions between individuals that result in certain legal impacts. Forensic linguistic analysis involves linguistic fields, including phonetics, semantics, discourse and pragmatics, stylistics, morphological, syntactical, and sociological. The important role of forensic linguistics is supporting the law enforcement process, examining counterfeit documents, detecting plagiarism/lies, and analyzing sound recordings and conversations directly and indirectly. With the ‘power’ of the analysis tool of each branch, the results and conclusions obtained by linguistics forensic experts may indicate a high level of confidence. Many legal cases occur in society, including oral or written in social media such as cases of insults, defamation, threats, fraud, bullying, criticism, mockery, instigation, slander, insults, and defamation also other cases can be solved by using a forensic linguistic perspective. These cases may be quite challenging because everyone in this field is required to have comprehensive linguistic abilities with the support of elaborative capabilities of the use of spoken language or writing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of pronunciation errors of "TH" (/θ/ and /ð/) by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at the university level. This study used a qualitative research method with pronunciation test instruments and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that EFL students in Indonesia have difficulty in pronouncing the "TH" sound due to the influence of their mother tongue (L1) which does not have the same sound. Students tend to replace the "TH" sound with other sounds such as /t/, /d/, or /s/, depending on the position of the "TH" sound in the word. Interviews with students also showed that psychological and social factors such as shyness and fear of being judged also affect the pronunciation errors of the "TH" sound. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the influence of the mother tongue and psychological factors in teaching English pronunciation.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the ideology contained in online gambling advertisements that appear on social media. The data for this qualitative descriptive research was three online gambling advertisements that were taken randomly on Instagram social media at the hashtag #judionline on September 18, 2022. The analysis process was carried out by analyzing the signs on the ads using a triangular semiotic theory framework by Charles S. Pierce. The findings showed that the three online gambling advertisements that appear on Instagram have similarities and differences in the use of the signs to construct the reality presented on online gambling advertisements. The continuity between the signs in online gambling advertisements creates an impression that online gambling is a fun, profitable and promising activity for the audience. The researcher suggests that readers who find online gambling advertisements on social media should be more careful and critical in reading the information raised by advertisements so that they can avoid things that can cause losses.

Speech acts play a crucial role in advertisements as they serve to effectively convey messages aimed at persuading audiences to either make purchases or take specific actions related to the advertised products. This study focused on analysing the use of representative and directive speech acts in advertisements by NIVEA Indonesia on its official Instagram account, @Nivea_id, during the period from January to June 2024. The data comprised sentences found in Instagram captions that demonstrate representative and directive speech acts. The findings revealed that NIVEA utilizes both types of speech acts in promoting its products. Representative speech acts were employed to provide information, make assertions, and present claims, effectively describing the products and persuading readers to purchase and use them. Meanwhile, directive speech acts were utilized to encourage action, either directly or indirectly, through commands, suggestions, invitations, and advice, all aimed at motivating readers to buy and engage with the products.

Abstract

Contention of Universal Grammar hypothesis is not a phantom so long as every cut-and-dried assumption and proposition is amenable to sustaining discredit and falsification. Cognitive scholars and linguists mesmerized by the trendy adherence to new presumptions; thanks to typological studies on numerous diverse languages, concur that children recruit different models of thinking which is nowise specific to a sire language. In an attempt to broach the assumption that language is too convoluted and complicated for human to learn, Chomskyan linguists have incubated on the idea of universal grammar for decays, by trying to inculcate their inferences and illations into language studies. To that end, this overview endeavors to zero in on and challenge universal grammar represented as a reproductive mechanism defying any developmental learning. Thus, universal grammar as a springboard for acquisition of language is set out for discussion regarding its lacuna, deficits, and drawbacks apropos of first language acquisition to enable a plausible conception of this premise, as being in vogue for decades. A broader footwork, discussing of suggestions, arguments, and empirical and theoretical evidences, will ensue.
