Abstract

Background: Denture stomatitis is one of the manifestation of oral candidiasis caused by the use of denture at night, broken dentures, or denture is not kept clean. If the number of Candida albicans increase beyond the normal limit, then within a certain time Candida albicans will be attached to the denture base and will cause infections of the denture wearer in the form of denture stomatitis that could interfere with the comfort and health of the denture wearer. Cinnamomum burmannii as a natural ingredient has an effect as an anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and larvasidal. Objective: To investigate the inhibition test of extracts of (Cinnamomum burmanii) on the growth of Candida albicans contained in the acrylic denture as one alternative to denture cleaning agents. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted using laboratory experimental method and using design Post test only control group design. Samples were Candida albicans taken from the denture acrylic, then test the inhibition in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy UMI. Results: Based on the statistical test showed that the zone of inhibition of cinnamon extract on all the different concentrations and had no significant difference in any concentration. Conclusion: Average inhibition cinnamon extract on different concentrations (20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) had no  significant difference to the growth of the Candida albicans in acrylic denture, but have similar effectiveness to the inhibition of the Candida albicans. Extract of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) at concentration of 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% showed differences in inhibition is more effective than standard drugs commonly used are (Chlorhexidine 0.2%). Inhibition of Candida albicans will increase along with the increase in the levels of concentration of extract of (Cinnamomum burmannii).

Abstract

Prophylactic antibiotics is very necessary in labor with the aim of avoiding infection during SC surgery. This study was descriptive observational with retrospective data collection. The subjects observed in this study were medical records documents of SC patients in RJI hospitals in the area of South Surabaya for the period February - April 2017, with 39 documents were divided into 3 groups. Group A which received Cefazolin, Group B received Ceftriaxone, and Group C which received Ceftaxime. This study was comparison of the effectiveness of these 3 prophylactic antibiotics was measured by temperature parameters, leukocytes and observation of the condition of the surgical wound. Based on statistical analysis using the Kruskal Wallis test, it was found that the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis Cefazolin was more effective in reducing the temperature and leukocytes of SC patients compared to Ceftriaxon and Cefotaxim, with an average rating of Cefazolin in temperature parameters of 27.58 and an average ranking in leukocyte parameters ie 25.81. Meanwhile in observing surgical wounds from three groups of antibiotic prophylaxis there was no redness, no swollen wounds, no discharge and no pus from surgical wounds

Abstract

This research methanol extract srikaya leaf performed to formulate ointments in bases variation that were hydrocarbon base, absorption base, water-soluble and emultion base. The aim was to determine which one the most stable base contain the methanol extract srikaya leaf. Stability evaluation maked in two condition were before and after stress condition at 5oC – 35oC for 10 cycles, by which the parameters were organoleptic observation, viscosity measurement, and yield value determination. Result of organoleptic showed that there was not alteration in color, smell, and consistency of those four bases, before and after stress conditioned. Statistyc data analyse of viscosity measurement showed that formula in absorption base was the stable one due to no alteration before and after accelerated condition. Yield value showed that there was thixotrophy plastic flowing exhibited by rheogram. And of those four formula ointment types of methanol extract srikaya leaf (Annona squamosa L) that have been made in, absorption base was the most stability optimum base. Key words: srikaya leaf, ointment, formulation

Abstract

Thrombocytopenia is the most common hemostatic disorder acquired in dogs and can be a life-threatening. Guava fruit and leaves extract are believed to improve thrombocyte counts. The purpose of this study was to prove that administration of guava juice could improve  thrombocyte count in mice that have thrombocytopenia after induced by chloramphenicol. We were used 24 mice as samples divided into 4 groups : KS group (given aquades for 12 days), KN group (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days, then aquades on next 5 days), group P1 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 5 g/ml concentration on 5 next day); and group P2 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 10 g/ml concentration on the next 5 days). Thrombocyte count was measured three times, before treatment (day 0), after chloramphenicol induction (day 7), and after guava juice (day 12). Data of thrombocyte count was analyzed using one way Anova and Post Hoc LSD test. The results showed that the guava juice (Psidium guajava L.) concentration of 5 g/ml and 10 g/ml had significant effect (p <0,05) to increase platelet numbers  in mice after induced by chlorampenicol dose 30mg/30grBW.

Abstract

Traditional medicines that derive from the plants processed in the form of traditional herb have provided a lot of contribution to the maintenance the health of community. Greater plantain (Plantago mayor L.) is one of natural materials that is useful as expectorant, however, so far the use is still processed traditionally by community. To find out and make sure that the ethanol extract of greater plantain (Plantago mayor L.) can be formulated to be syrup expectorant, then to determine the most effective concentration in lowering the viscosity of fluid mucus of every formula made.In this research, the syrup ethanol extract of greater plantain (Plantago mayor L.) was made with concentration variation of 6%, 8%, and 10%.Observation was made by looking at the lowering of viscosity of fluid mucus that has been diluted with phosphate buffer pH 7 by using viscometer Ostwald through the flow time. Based on the test result ANSIRA to 3 formulas of syrup expectorant and negative control, it was proved that the concentration of ethanol extract of greater plantain (Plantago mayor L.) in the treatment of this research significant effected in lowering the viscosity of mucus with price F count > F table or 66, 3181 > 4, 07 on the test level of 5% and 66, 3181 > 7, 59 on the test level of 1%. With the price KK 4, 11% then further test was done using BNJ test. Based on the test result BNJ, it was known the formula of syrup expectorant that most effective is the formula II with the concentration of ethanol extract of greater plantain 8%.
