Abstract

The ability to think geometrically is hierarchical so students need to master the initial level of thinking before they are going to the next level. Geometry learning strategies need to consider the level of students' thinking abilities. Assessment with paper-based tests has weaknesses in terms of practicality and does not develop students' technological literacy in the digitalization era. This study aims to analyze the need for the development of a website-based instrument to assess the geometric thinking skills of elementary school students referring to Van Hiele's theory. This research is a literature review with a qualitative approach. The articles reviewed in this research are articles that discuss thinking skills based on Van Hiele's theory with research subjects of elementary school students and published from 2021 to 2023. Data were analyzed by Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results showed that a web-based instrument for assessing the geometric thinking abilities of elementary school students based on Van Hiele's theory was needed to systematically assess students' geometric thinking abilities then could be followed up with learning activities according to students' abilities. The level of thinking of elementary school students assessed is from visualization to abstraction which is adapted to the material and curriculum of the elementary school.

Abstract

The descriptive study analyzed the skills of vocational school students with low, medium, and high levels of mathematical anxiety in terms of their problem-solving abilities. It used a qualitative approach to examine the various mathematical content strands and scientific contexts of the learners. Its findings were based on the notion of the problem-solving stage by Polya, Newman,  as well as Krulik and Rudnik. The data collected during the study was gathered through a written test, which involved asking the participants to complete a questionnaire about their mathematical anxiety levels before they were asked to solve numeracy problems. The results of the study revealed that students with high levels of anxiety were more prone to experiencing problems with problem-solving. The findings of this study are valuable to mathematics educators and researchers. It is also expected to contribute to the development of effective problem-solving strategies for students.

Abstract

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) tasks and decision-making are closely related to teaching and learning mathematics. This study aims to investigate teacher PCK in decision-making on different algebra tasks and to see activity in teacher-student interactions. This research is qualitative, with a research approach used as a case study. The participants in this study were only one teacher with different characteristics in mathematics tasks. Data collection consisted of primary research data from class observations, teacher interview transcripts, and researcher notes, while documents such as teacher notes were secondary data. Data analysis was carried out directly based on class observations and interviews. The findings in this study reveal teacher PCK through teacher decision-making regarding algebraic tasks in Swartz & Perkins (2016) three theories of thinking: generating ideas, clarifying ideas, and assessing the reasonableness of ideas.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the mathematical literacy ability of Grade XI vocational school students in Sumedang Regency in solving geometry problems. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through written tests, interviews, and documentation. The findings revealed that the average mathematical literacy ability of students was classified as adequate, with 65% of students falling into this category. The highest indicator of mathematical literacy ability was recognizing mathematical components in real-life problems (70%), while the lowest was evaluating and interpreting mathematical results (30%). Students faced challenges in solving geometry problems, such as errors in using formulas, ineffective problem-solving strategies, and a lack of interpretation of results. These difficulties highlight the importance of integrating real-life context-based problems into learning to enhance students' mathematical literacy ability. Such an approach helps students better understand and apply mathematical concepts meaningfully. This study emphasizes the need to address these challenges by designing targeted instructional methods. By incorporating practical examples and offering comprehensive support, educators can help students overcome their weaknesses. The findings are expected to serve as a foundation for developing effective teaching methods aimed at improving students’ mathematical literacy, enabling them to apply mathematics confidently in real-world contexts.

Abstract

Technological skills in Indonesian society need to be trained in order to be socially competent and able to face challenges in the future. The gap that occurs at this time is the rapid development of technology so that human resources are not ready to optimize it properly. The author designs Canva-assisted interactive learning media integrated with the CIRC (Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition) learning model so that students as one of the human resources can be motivated in significant technological developments. This research uses a Design Research approach with the stages of Preliminary Study, Formative Evaluation and Summative Evaluation. This research was conducted in one of the Junior High Schools in Cianjur Regency. After a series of stages were carried out, the responses given by students to the media developed in the visual group were in the average range of 4-5. This shows that the learning media developed gets a good response and is feasible to use in learning mathematics, especially building materials. It is hoped that this media can be developed on other materials and can motivate other math teachers.
