Abstract

The advancement of manufacturing technology has increased the importance of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) competencies in engineering and vocational education. However, limited access to physical CNC machines and high operational costs remain significant challenges in CNC learning. The Swansoft CNC Simulator has emerged as an innovative solution that enables students to learn CNC programming and machine operation in a safe, flexible, and virtual learning environment. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 32 students who had experience using the Swansoft CNC Simulator in CNC learning activities. The research instrument was developed based on Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory, encompassing five key attributes: Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability, and Observability. The collected data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results revealed that most students perceived the Swansoft CNC Simulator as highly beneficial in improving their understanding of CNC programming and machine operation. The findings also indicated a high level of technology adoption among students, although several challenges related to compatibility with individual learning preferences and perceived complexity were identified. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that Virtual Reality (VR) technology has considerable potential to enhance the effectiveness of CNC learning, as most students expressed strong interest in integrating VR into CNC simulation environments. The study concludes that the Swansoft CNC Simulator contributes positively to learning effectiveness, reduces the risk of errors during CNC training, and enriches students’ learning experiences. The integration of Virtual Reality is recommended as an innovative approach to support more realistic, immersive, and effective simulation-based CNC learning

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming deeply embedded in technical and vocational education and training, yet the literature on this convergence remains fragmented across separate research traditions. This study maps the intellectual structure of AI within vocational learning ecosystems and synthesizes the field's most influential contributions to clarify how AI is reorganizing these ecosystems. The study uses a hybrid design combining bibliometric science mapping with a PRISMA-based systematic review. Researchers searched the Scopus database and analyzed a dataset of 141 documents published between 2012 and 2026 for publication dynamics, geographical distribution, source distribution, citation impact, and keyword co-occurrence; the most conceptually relevant documents were then read in full for narrative synthesis. The field is young but growing rapidly: 104 documents (73.8 percent) were published between 2024 and 2026, and Indonesia is the largest single-country contributor. Co-occurrence analysis produced four thematic clusters: engineering-education and digital-infrastructure ecosystems, AI-based adaptive and personalized learning, vocational and workforce training, and sustainability and policy. Beyond mapping these clusters, this study's principal contribution is a conceptual reframing of AI's role in the field: rather than a discrete instructional tool, AI increasingly functions as an ecosystem orchestration layer that integrates digital infrastructure, adaptive and personalized learning, workforce-aligned competency development, and credentialing systems into a single structure connecting curriculum, learners, industry, and recognition mechanisms. Empirical evidence for this orchestration role, however, remains concentrated in higher education and engineering contexts; direct evidence from vocational settings, including workshops, laboratories, and work-based learning, is still scarce. The findings provide vocational institutions and policymakers with an evidence-based agenda for designing AI-enabled vocational learning ecosystems

Abstract

The reliability of a turbine is a crucial factor in ensuring the continuous operation of a hydropower plant. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of preventive maintenance on a 6 MW horizontal Francis turbine at Pakkat Hydropower Plant, PT. Energi Sakti Sentosa, using the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) methods. A quantitative approach was employed using historical turbine operation and maintenance data collected from May 2025 to May 2026. The data were obtained through field observations, interviews, documentation, and literature review. The analysis was conducted by calculating MTBF, MTTR, and availability as indicators of equipment reliability and maintenance performance. The results show that the turbine achieved an MTBF value of 558.19 hours, an MTTR value of 2.30 hours, and an availability of 92.24%. Based on the MTBF value, the recommended preventive maintenance interval is 446.55 operating hours, equivalent to approximately 18–19 days of continuous operation. These findings indicate that the existing preventive maintenance program has provided a satisfactory level of reliability. However, further improvement can be achieved by optimizing maintenance scheduling, performing regular condition monitoring of critical components, and implementing a condition-based maintenance approach to enhance equipment availability and reduce unplanned downtime.

Abstract

This study describes the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) through metal-product fabrication in the Creative Products and Entrepreneurship (CP&E) subject for Grade XI students in the Light Vehicle Engineering program. A descriptive case study was conducted with 20 students at SMK Mataram Semarang from February to May 2026 over 12 meetings. The students were organized into three groups that fabricated two long metal benches and one shoe rack. Data were obtained from a student-response questionnaire, a process-and-product assessment rubric, a 12-item teacher-response instrument, documentation, and implementation notes. The analysis of student responses focused on nine indicators of PjBL implementation. The response indicators ranged from 78% to 83%, indicating positive to very positive responses. Group 1 obtained 38 points and was categorized as very good, whereas Groups 2 and 3 obtained 34 and 33 points and were categorized as good. The teacher-response instrument yielded 43 of 48 points (89.58%) and was categorized as very good, although incomplete finishing received the lowest rating. The main constraints were limited practice time and materials, uneven participation among groups, and incomplete paintings in two groups. The findings indicate that PjBL involving metal-product fabrication can provide an authentic vocational learning experience when materials, time allocation, task distribution, safety supervision, and assessment rubrics are systematically prepared. Practically, these findings provide vocational teachers with a planning framework for selecting feasible products, organizing group roles, scheduling staged inspections, and reserving sufficient time for finishing in CP&E instruction.

Abstract

This article aims to synthesise the trends, design characteristics, effectiveness, and challenges of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM/STEAM) approaches, and e-modules in vocational education. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The literature search retrieved 189 records from six databases: Google Scholar, Portal Garuda, DOAJ, ScienceDirect, ERIC, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria focused on empirical and R&D studies published between 2020-2025 that applied PjBL, STEM, and digital modules within vocational and applied engineering contexts. After the screening and eligibility processes, 21 key articles were included for thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that the integration of PjBL-STEM e-modules contributes to (1) enhancing cognitive skills, including problem-solving, mathematical, and visual literacy; (2) supporting psychomotor readiness through pre-workshop digital simulations; (3) fostering scientific communication, collaboration, and self-efficacy; and (4) contextualising learning through Ethno-STEM and socio-scientific issues. However, implementation faces significant challenges, particularly regarding teachers' TPACK readiness, the quality of e-module UI/UX design, and digital infrastructure stability. This study recommends strengthening inclusive digital learning ecosystems and project-based teacher training in vocational schools.

Abstract

Vocational training for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) conventionally relies on real-time verbal instruction, presenting a critical communication barrier for sensory-impaired trainees. The mandatory use of welding helmets obstructs essential visual cues, such as lip-reading and sign language, thereby preventing immediate corrective feedback on fundamental welding parameters. Consequently, technical errors are often only identified after the welding process is complete, which prolongs the learning curve and increases material waste. To address this pedagogical gap, this study aimed to develop a portable, low-cost SMAW simulator as an inclusive learning medium for trainees with sensory disabilities at Sentra Terpadu Inten Soewono and to evaluate its feasibility. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model consisting of the define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The resulting product is a sensor-based welding simulator that provides real-time visual feedback through LED indicators and a Python-based evaluation dashboard. The learning media was evaluated through expert validation and user testing. The expert validation achieved a feasibility score of 89% and 99%, while the user evaluation obtained 91.32%, both categorized as very feasible. The findings indicate that the simulator is suitable as a learning medium to help trainees practice fundamental SMAW welding competencies before performing actual welding using standard equipment.

Abstract

Truck tire mounting is a manual, physically demanding activity that can impose a physiological load on workers. Previous research has led to the development of a truck tire mounting tool based on an ergo-mechanical approach that accounts for workers' anthropometric characteristics. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a newly developed tool by comparing a conventional method with the method using the new tool, based on installation time and workers' physiological responses. Testing was conducted on five male workers, comparing installation time, heart rate change (ΔHR), and Cardiovascular Load (%CVL) between the two methods. The magnitude of the difference between the two conditions was also evaluated using Cohen's dz effect size for paired data. The results show that the mean setup time decreased from 4.08 to 2.92 minutes, a reduction of 28.48%. The mean ΔHR decreased from 31.8 to 15.8 bpm (a 50.3% reduction), while the mean %CVL decreased from 26.34% to 13.06% (a 50.42% reduction). Effect size analysis reveals consistent differences between the two methods regarding installation time, ΔHR, and %CVL. The study results indicate that using the new tool could improve the efficiency of the tire installation process while reducing workers' cardiovascular response. However, the limited number of subjects means that the results of this study need to be viewed as initial experimental evidence and cannot be generalised to a wider working population.
