Abstract

The current research aims to: 1) determine the difference between self-efficacy (SE) and critical thinking skills (CTS) of pre-service chemistry teachers who were taught using the PjBL model; and 2) know how much the implementation of the PjBL model influences their self-efficacy (SE) and critical thinking skills (CTS). This experimental research was conducted through a quasi-experimental nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient value test for the validation of the instruments resulted in SE α = .86 and CTS α = .85. Manova test with a significance level of .05 was also performed to analyze the data. The results indicated: 1) there were significant differences in self-efficacy (SE) and critical thinking skills (CTS) before and after the implementation of the PjBL model, and 2) there was a significant effect of implementing the PjBL model on self-efficacy (SE) and critical thinking skills (CTS) with the contribution of the PjBL model of 35%. These results contribute to educational literature as an alternative solution for lecturers to apply the PjBL model in chemistry education learning in universities. Considering the characteristics of the learning material, students, and environmental conditions will maximize teamwork cooperation by using project-based activities to develop students' 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Nature of Science is a significant element in science education, especially for the linkages to scientific literacy. As one of an educational support for both teachers and students, textbooks become crucial for teaching and learning. Textbooks may elicit NOS understanding for students and guide teacher to deliver NOS understanding. The way to make better process and outcome, integration of NOS into the textbooks comprehensively is crucial. To get a better understanding of NOS within the diverse framework, an inclusive framework is needed to get better understanding, thus, Family Resemblance Approach is chosen. This study aims to identify the profile of NOS integration and NOS quality in secondary science textbooks by comparing different textbook from three neighboring countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore). Descriptive research design with content analysis method conducted to identify the documents using the Family Resemblance Approach to NOS as the analytical framework. The results show that Indonesian textbooks presenting most abundance of NOS, but contain most materials delivered and the quality is mainly at low level. Malaysian textbooks contain the least representation but contain well proportion for the quality and materials presented. Singapore textbooks is least materials with abundance of NOS and consist of high-level quality of NOS. This may lead the conformity of the significance of textbooks elicited students understanding of NOS

Abstract

The progress of the traditional gold mining industry has a positive impact on improving the quality of life of the people, but on the other hand the progress of this industry has a negative impact on the environment. Mercury contamination from traditional gold mining occurs when the processing takes place which results in the holding tank being full, so that the tailings overflow and flow into the river, especially if it rains, then mercury contamination occurs in the surrounding environment. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of a simple filtering device for activated coconut shell charcoal to reduce mercury levels in the waste water of the logs which included optimum contact time, optimum particle size, and optimum reuse. This type of research is True Experimental Design by providing treatment (contact time, particle size and repeated use of activated charcoal). It was concluded that the absorption of mercury waste with the highest efficiency value was activated charcoal particles measuring 35 mesh (0.5 mm) with an absorption percentage of 75.81%, the highest absorption percentage of mercury waste with a contact time of 180 minutes was 88.89%, and the optimal variation of the repetition of the use of activated charcoal is 5 times.
