Abstract

Sleeping disorder is a symptom often suffered by breast cancer patients. To overcome it, five-finger relaxation technique is considered helpful. In previous research, this technique can be utilized to lower the level of anxiety and fatigue. This research, therefore, aims at identifying the effect of five-finger relaxation technique to the sleep quality of breast cancer patients. The research method used that of quasi experiment with pre-test and post-test control group design. The population included breast cancer patients within the service of the healthcare in Sekarwangi Hospital and R. Syamsudin SH Hospital. Sampling was done consecutively. The number of samples from control and intervention group were 30 people each. The intervention group received a standard hospital therapy and five-finger relaxation technique divided in 15 sessions with 10-15 minutes time every other day for 1 month. Meanwhile, the control group received only a standard hospital therapy. The measurement tool was PSQI. The analysis used paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test.The result of the research has shown a difference in scores during pre-test and post-test of the sleep quality on both groups due to p value < 0.05. A difference has striken on the scores of sleep quality between control and intervention group with the latter having higher scores than the former. It can be concluded that five-finger relaxation technique does affect the quality sleep of breast cancer patients. The result of this research can be an additional intervention to decrease the symptoms suffered by breast cancer patients.

Abstract

Attention is an important aspect of cognitive development in the perspective of information processing, whereas mood is an affective aspect relating to expectations about positive or negative feelings. Decreased attention and mood in post-stroke patients can cause instability, cognitive impairment, and long-term rehabilitation. These impacts affect the patients’ activity daily living (ADL). Priority of post stroke patient care in hospital was priority on physical problem rather than psychological, social and spiritual problems. Nurses as caregivers in the hospitals  should understand in manage bio-psycho-socio-cultural-spiritual problems in post-stroke patients. This descriptive study that used a descriptive qualitative research was conducted to describe the barrier of managing attention and mood in post stroke from the perspective of nurses. This research was a pilot study using qualitative design and involved six nurses at Temanggung General Hospital, Indonesia. The data collection was carried out using in-depth semi-structured interviews. The data analyzed using inductive content analysis. Five themes emerging from data included the nurse's focus on the physical problem, lack of awareness to manage attention and mood, unavailability of early assessment for attention and mood, family participation in nursing care and lack of information about the interventions in handling attention and mood. The initial assessment of attention and mood greatly encourages nurses to provide alternative or complementary nursing that can be administered in the hospital. Nurses’ understanding of knowledge and skills are essential to prevent the impact of reduced attention and mood. The management of attention and mood should be supported by all professional health providers, and facilities in hospitals, as well as the role of the family.

Abstract

Mucositis is very common in children with cancer who received chemotherapy. Mucositis in children renders other health problems such as pain, eating problems, insomnia, and emotional problems that directly determine children’s quality of life. The purpose of this research was to identify how the effects of mucositis on quality of life in children with cancer who received chemotherapy. The method used in this research is correlative descriptive analytic with cross-sectional design. Samples taken in this research utilized consecutive sampling technique. The children with cancer who met the inclusion criteria were approached to participate in this research. Sixty children with cancer hospitalized in Dr. Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung recruited in this research. Mucositis identification utilized Oral Assessment Guide (OAG). Data quality of life (QoL) would be assessed with PedsQoL Cancer Module 3.0. Data were analyzed by Chi-square correlation test. There are 53 children (88.3%) who experienced mucositis. In contrast, there are only 7 children who didn’t experience mucositis (11.7%). Based on this survey, there are 37 children (61.7%) have bad quality of life. Otherwise, 23 children (38.3%) have good quality of life. This research found that there is a significant relationship between mucositis and QoL of children with cancer. Accordingly, the relationship between mucositis cases and QoL of children with cancer valued at 0.006 (p<0.05). Mucositis cause low QoL in children with cancer compared to them without mucositis. Nurse should increase nursing care for children with mucositis as the side effect of chemotherapy. Suggested efforts are to prevent mucositis complication that will impact QoL, such as giving oral care with honey, keeping humid oral mucosa, and preventing infection

Abstract

In the recent years, there is an increasing number of the diabetes incidence worldwide. Self-care is believed as one of key in chronic disease management. In order to increase the capability to self-care, diabetics patients need to be empowered with the knowledge and skills through an educational program. There were some existed diabetes educational programs, however for developing country such as Indonesia, there was a need to develop a culturally relevant diabetes education program. This study was aimed to identify feasibility and the effect of the Indonesian Group-based Diabetes Education Program (InGDEP) on knowledge and self-care behaviors among type 2 diabetic patients. This quasi experimental with one group pre-and post-test only design involved 62 diabetic patients and 16 health professionals who actively delivered the program in four community health centers (Puskesmas). Data were collected using Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ) and Summary of Self Care Activities (SDSCA). Paired t-test used to analyze the effect of the InGDEP on the knowledge, self-care, and biometric measurement (HbA1c). The knowledge score for pre-test was 13.2+3.9 and post-test was 16.1±3.5, self-care activities score for pre-test was 3.31±1.10 and post-test was 3.99±1.27 and the HbA1C level was 10.56±2.32 The results showed there was the significant effect of InGDEP on diabetes patients’ knowledge, some changes in self-care and biometric measurements even though it was not significant. The program also can be accepted by the health professionals where there was a good team work in delivering the educational program. It can be recommended that the InGDEP has an effect in improving knowledge and self-care among diabetics’ patients, however since the effect on self-care and biometric changes was not significant, further research related to the factors that influence the self-care and biometric changes is needed.

Abstract

intravenous insertion is the cause of pain that the children most commonly experience when children are being hospitalised. Repeated and insurmountable in early childhood, it will impact trauma to the child, so that pain management is a main priority for nurses. However, nurses have barrier to implement pain management effectively. Therefore, involvement of the parents in pain management was so important. One of the non-pharmacological pain management involving parents is distraction by the parent (Parent Distraction Coaching).  The purpose of this research was to examined the difference intensity of pain children from ages 1-5 years old between intervention group and control group during intravenous insertion. This research uses quasi experimental methode by applying the pre-experimental design which is called the intact group comparison. Through the consecutive sampling, the data has been collected from 17 children in each group, both control and intervention groups. Respondents in the intervention group were the children undergoing the intravenous insertion and they were accompanied by their parents' distraction after the parents got the parental distraction coaching, while respondents in the control group were the children undergoing the intravenous insertion in accordance with the hospital procedures but they were not accompanied by their parents' distraction. The assessment of pain intensity was done by using FLACC instruments (Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability). The data were analyzed descriptively and tested by using inferential t test-independent where the value of p < 0.05. From the results of the statistical tests using t test-independent test, the value of p obtained is 0.005 (p value <0.05). This value indicates that there is a significant difference between the intensity of pain experienced by children in the control group and in the intervention group during the intravenous insertion. Based on these results, nurses are expected to be aware of the importance of parents or family involvement in reducing the pain experienced by children during intravenous insertion, so that the implementation of pain management in children becomes more effective.

Abstract

The problem of malnutrition remains overlooked in Indonesia, especially on children, caused by various factors. Indonesia is the 17th country with 3 nutrition problems, including stunting (short body), wasting (skinny body), and overweight (obesity). This research aims to analyze factors affecting nutrition status on children in the area of West Java Province, including the mother’s and the child’s socio-demographics factor, and the child’s health status. The research method was descriptive quantitative with cross-sectional approach. The number of samples is 810. The research was conducted in 6 districts that support Family Planning (KB), including Bandung District, Bandung City, West Bandung District, Subang District, Sumedang District, and Garut District. The quantitative analysis consisted of univariates using percentage and frequency distribution, as well as bivariate analysis using chi square test. The result of the research shows that nearly all toddlers have good nutrition status as much as 87.9%, and toddlers with malnutrition as much as 10.6%. The analysis factor shows that there is a relationship between the mother’s age (p = 0.048; OR = 1.583), family income (p = 0.010; OR = 1.803), delivery complications (p = 0.008; OR = 2.091), provision of exclusive breastfed milk (ASI) at the age of 0 - 6 years old (p = 0.000; OR = 2.321), provision of exclusive breast milk and complementary feeding given to babies before 6 months old (MPASI) at the age of 6 months to 2 years old (p = 0.002; OR = 2.037), and the child’s history of hospitalization (p = 0.008; OR = 2.055), while other factors are considered irrelevant. This research suggests that healthcare staff collaborate in providing knowledge to mothers on the provision of exclusive breast milk and complementary feeding as well as the prevention of illness on their children.
