Abstract

Energy Efficiency Behaviour of Low-Cost Rental Apartment (Rusunawa) Residents in DKI JakartaThe density and diverse housing, such as rusunawa, occupant behavior plays a critical role in determining the building operational efficiency. This study aims to explore the energy efficiency-related behavior of rusunawa occupants, focusing on the Daan Mogot and Tipar Cakung Rusunawa complexes. The research method employed is an exploratory case study using the Yin approach, based on qualitative data and field observations. The findings reveal that limitations in cross-ventilation, unit orientation, and natural lighting prompt occupants to modify their behavior, which in turn leads to increased energy consumption. Furthermore, the majority of occupants lack a theoretical understanding of energy efficiency concepts, with energy-saving practices occurring spontaneously through daily habits. Based on these findings, the integration of architectural design, occupant education, and participatory policies is essential for creating energy-efficient Rusunawa in Jakarta.

Abstract

The Application of Cultural Acculturation to the Form and Structure of the Surakarta Grand MosqueThe architecture of the Surakarta Grand Mosque is a physical manifestation of cultural acculturation, integrating Islamic values, Javanese cosmology, and historical development. This study aims to identify the application of cultural acculturation within the mosque’s spatial layout, form, and structure. Utilizing a qualitative method with asingle case study approach, the research employs interactive analysis through field observations, interviews, and historical document reviews spanning the reigns of Paku Buwana III to Paku Buwana X. Results indicate that spatially, the mosque consistently applies a Javanese-Islamic cosmological axis aligned with Demak Palace patterns. In terms of from and structure, visual hybridity is found in the tiered tajug roof and thesakaguru timber construction system, which adapted to functional and ceremonial need. These findings confirms that cultural acculturation in the Surakarta Grand Mosque serves as a strategy that strengthens the resilience of vernacular architecture against changing times without losing its philosophical identity.

Abstract

To address sustainability challenges caused by climate change, it is essential to foster environmental awareness among children in coastal areas from an early age. The aim of this study was to examine the implications of play space characteristics on school-age children's affinity for nature, or biophilia, through a case study of Belakang Padang Island in the hinterland area of Batam City, Riau Islands, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilising data collection methods such as mental mapping, participatory observation, and interviews. The findings indicated that the play spaces on the island exhibit both spatial and non-spatial characteristics and can be categorised into three main zones: land, transition, and sea. Children’s love for nature is reflected in their preference for play locations, sensory enjoyment of natural elements, a desire to explore nature, and curiosity about the natural world. Strategic and accessible play spaces allow for active interaction with natural elements, while types of play and social interactions strengthen children’s emotional attachment to the environment.

Abstract

Evaluation of Artificial Lighting on User Visual Comfort in DPK Kalimatan Timur Building Reading RoomsThis study evaluates the artificial lighting levels in the Children’s and Digital Reading Rooms of DPK Kaltim to assess their compliance with the SNI 6197:2020 and suitability for user visual comfort. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, illumination levels were measured with a lux meter and simulated using Dialux software. The results revealed significant non-compliance with the standards. The Children's Reading Room recorded an average of 107.3 lux (measured) and 269 lux (simulated), far below the 350 lux standard. Similarly, the Digital Reading Room measured 78.1 lux (measured) and 251 lux (simulated), failing to meet the required 500 lux. These deficiencies severely compromise user comfort and visual performance. Therefore, this study recommends a lighting system redesign, proposing the installation of 20 units lamps in the Children’s Reading Room and 24 units in the Digital Reading Room of 40 Watt LED Slimbend  Recessed to achieve the required illumination standards.

Abstract

Changes in the Settlement Culture of Communities Along the Musi RiverThe settlements along the Musi River are an important part of the cultural identity of the indigenous people of Palembang, as they reflect local customs and distinctive traditional house architecture. However, the culture of living along the riverbank has gradually shifted to inland areas. This study aims to analyze the forms of change in the settlement culture of the Musi Riverbank community from the past to the present and to identify the factors causing these changes, particularly in the areas of Ki Gede Ing Suro, 32 Ilir, and 35 Ilir. This research employed an exploratory qualitative method through field observations, interviews, and an examination of the socio-cultural conditions of the community. The results indicate a shift in settlement patterns from riverbank dwellings to inland settlements. These changes are influenced by environmental, social, and economic factors, infrastructure development, as well as changes in the community’s living needs.

Abstract

Bamboo, despite its potential as a sustainable building material, remains underutilized due to limited community perceptions and preferences, shaped by insufficient exposure and understanding. This research addresses the challenge by investigating how individual experiences and learning processes influence community attitudes toward bamboo, aiming to develop strategies to enhance its utilization. A mixed-method approach was employed, collecting data from 259 respondents through open- and closed-ended questionnaires, which were analyzed using regression techniques. The findings reveal that experiential learning plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions. Empirical experiences, such as daily interactions with bamboo-based furniture, significantly increase interest in using bamboo for architectural applications (p < 0.0001). Likewise, passive learning, including reading articles, viewing photographs, or visiting bamboo structures, enhances awareness of its potential as a construction material (p = 0.0002). Additionally, exposure to bamboo in artistic contexts elevates its perceived aesthetic value (p = 0.0004). Given the urgent need to promote sustainable materials, this study emphasizes the transformative impact of experiential learning in shifting community perceptions. By integrating bamboo into daily life—through architectural furniture, artwork, and media exposure—and fostering passive learning initiatives such as exhibitions, educational programs, and awareness campaigns, bamboo’s acceptance and application in the built environment can be significantly expanded. These findings provide a strategic foundation for promoting bamboo as both a functional and aesthetic material, contributing to sustainable construction practices and ecological conservation efforts.

Abstract

Spatial Transformation of Limas Houses Based on Bengkilas Typology along the Musi RiverLimas houses are a distinctive architectural heritage of Palembang characterized by the bengkilas system that forms spatial hierarchy. Their existence is closely related to the role of the Musi River in shaping riverside settlement patterns and community activities. However, urbanization, shifts in mobility orientation, and increasing demand for productive spaces have driven spatial transformations in limas houses. This study aims to analyze spatial transformation patterns of three- and four-bengkilas limas houses and their relationship with river-based community activities. This research employs a qualitative architectural typological analysis through literature review and visual documentation to examine spatial configurations and transformations. The results indicate major changes in underfloor use, bengkilas simplification, building orientation, and the use of modern materials affecting traditional spatial characteristics. This study recommends an adaptive preservation approach based on typology to support sustainable conservation of limas houses.

Abstract

The development of spatial planning in a campus environment requires careful planning to enhance social interaction, comfort, and the efficiency of human movement. This study aims to identify the characteristics of outdoor space configurations on a campus, depicted through circulation networks and gathering spaces as public areas. This study uses a quantitative method with modeling and simulation strategy. The simulation is conducted using space syntax approach through DepthmapX software to analyze outdoor spaces on the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Humanities at UIN Walisongo. The results show that isolated spaces can be better connected to the core areas of the campus by engineering wider access routes and reducing outdoor spatial elements that obstruct accessibility. The increase in spatial connectivity is indicated by the overall integration and intelligence values. This enhancement is expected to create a more inclusive, functional, and efficient campus outdoor space that supports both academic and non-academic activities
