Abstract

The rapid pace of urban change and architecture in a constant state of flux have made traditional and static design strategies struggle to adapt to dynamic environments. Prescribed and predictive programs often become obsolete as they no longer correspond to their intended function and representation, making architectural hybridity increasingly important. Hybridity here focuses on multifunctional spaces, approaching the disjunction of events across 15 public building types to identify the interchangeable relation of their essential elements. Similarities of their essence then are formed as conjunctions into a spatial organization catalogue through flexible strategies such as open-plan configurations, double-helix ramp systems, modular furniture systems, and platform mechanisms capable of accommodating diverse activities within a single structure. This design approach aims to maximize space utilization so it can be easily reconfigured to suit different activities and foster more vibrant and dynamic spaces. By manipulating conflict and combining shared essentials through flexibility and modular systems, this approach offers new spaces and realities.

Abstract

Post-Occupancy Evaluation of the Functional Performance of Panti Wreda Widhi Asih SurakartaElderly care facilities require a built environment that ensures comfort, safety, and accessibility to support residents' quality of life. This study evaluates the Panti Wreda Widhi Asih Surakarta through physical, environmental comfort, and accessibility aspects using the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) method with a mixed-methods approach comprising observation, interviews, questionnaires, and environmental parameter measurements. Results indicate that although the physical condition of the building was rated reasonably good, most environmental parameters did not meet the standards, particularly high indoor temperatures (32–35°C), minimal air circulation, noise levels exceeding the threshold, and inadequate accessibility elements. Design interventions based on thermal comfort and universal design are needed to improve the quality of the elderly residential environment.

Abstract

Fire safety is a major concern in public buildings, especially in educational institutions with high user density and complex layouts. The Main Library of Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) must be prepared to handle emergencies through well-planned evacuation routes. This study analyzes the existing evacuation system and fire safety conditions in the library. Using Pathfinder simulation software, the research models pedestrian behavior during evacuation to assess time efficiency, congestion points, and overall route effectiveness. Key factors include exit accessibility, user familiarity, crowd density, and pathway dimensions. The simulation reveals issues such as limited stairwell capacity, poorsignage visibility, and inadequate alternative routes.This study recommends improving exit width, repositioning emergency signs, and conducting regular evacuation drills. These interventions aim to enhance evacuation safety and align with national fire safety standards, contributing to a safer and more resilient academic environment.

Abstract

Structural Performance of a Joglo House under Seismic Loads and Implications for Modern Residential DesignQuantitative studies on the structural resilience of joglo houses in earthquake-prone areas are limited, necessitating scientific analysis to ensure safety. This study analyzes the structural behavior of a joglo house in Dusun Jendi, Selogiri District, Wonogiri Regency, using the finite element method (FEM) through three-dimensional structural modeling in SAP2000. Data were obtained from field surveys, including element dimensions, timber material properties, and traditional joint systems. The analysis incorporated combined gravity and seismic loading in accordance with Indonesian National Standards (SNI). The results indicate that the joglo structure exhibits a hierarchical load distribution mechanism, transferring loads from the roof to horizontal elements (blandar), the main vertical elements (soko guru), and the foundation. Modal analysis identified three dominant vibration modes, namely lateral displacements and torsional rotation. The blandar resists the largest bending forces, while the soko guru carries the highest axial loads, indicating stable and earthquake-adaptive structural performance.

Abstract

Sustainable development requires the adoption of green buildings in the housing sector to reduce environmental impact. However, premium costs remain a major barrier, limiting public interest in green housing. Therefore, this study analyzes Willingness to Pay (WTP) as an indicator of value perception and commitment to sustainable architecture. A qualitative descriptive approach with bivariate open coding analysis was applied, utilizing data from online questionnaires with snowball sampling. Findings identify six key factors influencing WTP, with financial behavior as the dominant factor (52%), followed by environmental awareness, perceived benefits, innovation preference, education level, and long-term expectations. The results confirm that economic considerations play a crucial role in determining willingness to pay for green housing, that needs a balanced strategy between cost and benefits is essential to increase adoption of green buildings and support sustainable development.

Abstract

This study explores the Subak agricultural landscape in Anggabaya Village, Denpasar, Bali, focusing on its role in sustaining socio-cultural, religious, and ecological practies. Central to this research in the Telajakan Subak, examined to identify and classify its typologies and structural components through an architectural framework. Using qualitative methods, the study involves field surveys, spatial documentation, and interviews. The analysis is guided by five architectural principles and function. Findings reveal diverse Subak typologies influenced by irrigation infrastructure, accessibility, and topography, including both organic and constructed models. These results demonstrate that Telajakan Subak serves as a vital model for sustainable landscape management. This research contributes to vernacular landscape architecture and supports integrating traditional systems into modern urban-rural planning, ensuring the resilience of Balinese cultural landscapes amid suburban pressures.

Abstract

Result of this study provides the recommendation of thermal and daylighting design strategies implementation in tropical-equatorial area, specifically student dormitory of Tadulako University in Palu Indonesia. This study employed literature, field, and mathematical study to analyses dormitory physical design, as well as thermal and lighting environment. Climatic variables were recorded both internal and external for 3 consecutive days. Result of the study indicated that the condition of Student Dormitory of Tadulako University needs to be improved. This study highlighted that opening area of 30%-50% from the floor area were needed. Furthermore, side-hung and jalousie window with light shelf were recommended for uniform daylighting and optimal air flow.

Abstract

Performance of Teak Wood Louvre for Natural Ventilation andNoise Control trough SimulationLouvres, as facade elements, have dual potential in supporting natural ventilation performance and reducing noise. However, their performance strongly depends on blade geometric configuration. A quantitative study is required to evaluate Louvre blade configuration in terms of ventilation and acoustic performance, as well as their effectiveness when using teak wood material. The methods include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation to obtain Air Changes per Hour (ACH) value and acoustic simulations to determine Transmission Loss (TL). The result shows that blade spacing is the dominant factor. A configuration with 2.5mm spacing and a 3/5 inclination provides the most balanced performance, although it does not yet meet the standard. The use of teak wood is proven to improve both natural ventilation and acoustic performance compared to aluminium.

Abstract

The development of public activity spaces in traditional fishing communities due to urbanization and the growth of tourism has led to changes in existing territories. This requires them to adjust to these changes. This research aims to understand how fishing communities maintain their territories through spatial practices, social interactions, and territorial definitions after the changes. The research method used is qualitative phenomenology, to explore the organization of social interaction, identity, security, and territorial stimulation of the community in public activity spaces. Through observations and interviews, it was found that fishermen's territoriality, in addition to functioning as a defense, also plays an important role in strengthening social relations. The unique factors that shape the concept of fishermen's territoriality, namely dependence on income sources, egalitarian social structure, and a strong spirit of gotong royong, produce a concept of spatial interaction that is different from other neighborhoods.
